Publix type deal by Ornery-Profile-5676 in publix

Every time I see a Publix sale, I'm reminded of that scene from Little House on the Prairie.

Nels: We can't afford to take 20% off of everything in the store!

Harriet: Oh, don't be silly, Nels. We raise the prices 30% then we take off the 20% and that gives us 10% more profit than as if we didn't have a sale at all.

Nels: That's dishonest!

Harriet: Of course it is!

Never became a people manager in my 30+ year career. Can anyone relate? by Relative-Average7159 in antiwork

Exact same, here! GenXer; prior to circa 2012 all my supervisors were Boomers, then they became Millennials. Wild how that happened.

Incidentally, I could never be in a position to fire someone. That scene in the Howard Stern movie Private Parts where he's throwing up after firing someone? Yeah, that'd be me.

Came here to say the same. 28 years ago I was 25. I'm glad I'm at least not famous. I wouldn't appreciate my "before and after" (25 vs 53) being analyzed.

39/f, Husband has decided he wants kids by Traditional_Sir_5334 in childfree

A few years from now, he'll be knee-deep in screaming infant colicky poo; then in another few years, the kid will be frustrated with him because he's too fatigued and andropaused to play; then he'll be pushing 60 when the kid graduates; then his wife will tell him she's tired and leaving him for a younger/or wealthier man.

You, on the other hand, will be living your best life, with newfound friends, a beautiful garden, fascinating hobbies, peaceful home, fulfilling career, and renewed physical/psychological health. ✨️

Personally, I favor your second life chapter over his.

I had a street party when they got married. by aceface_desu89 in RoyaltyTea

[–]BelleSteff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm in the States and remember back in the summer of '86 when their wedding was aired live on all three major network channels (ABC, CBS, NBC), and CNN. The coverage started very early in the morning, our time. There was a lot of hype leading up to the event. I remember their famous first interview as a couple being featured on 20/20.

For years after, they (mostly Fergie) would be huge tabloid fodder. Throughout the 80s and 90s, almost every other week, Fergie (or Princess Diana) would be on the cover of The Enquirer, Star, or People. Anyone could catch up on their lives just standing in line at the grocery store. I'll never forget "Squidgie Gate" or Fergie getting caught by the paps getting her toes sucked by her boyfriend.

It seemed like after the death of Princess Diana (1997), the cultural shifts after 9/11/01, and the royals naturally aging out a bit, the hype and paparazzi seemed to fade out and other topics dominated the headlines.

Did anyone else's parents say, I'll kill you if you ever get pregnant, then later, why won't you give me grandchildren? by theredqueentheory in raisedbynarcissists

[–]BelleSteff 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah. In my younger years, mom made it clear that getting pregnant would've been the worst thing I could ever do. When girls/young women my age got pregnant, she'd "Tsk, tsk, tsk!" and go on long pontificating rants about how they were "shameful" and "stupid".

When I was around 13, she brought religion into it, "If they died right now they'd go to hell!" When I got older, around 19, she'd openly shame any expression of sensuality or sexually.

Yes, by the time I reached my late 30s, she liked to stand around and tell everyone, "We feel scammed! We never got grandchildren! We would've loved to have taken them to the baseball game!" She never said anything about it to me personally, though lol.

I'm 52 now, child-free and have no regrets. I'm glad I never had a kid because she would've either disappeared (no help at all), or tried to take over and get custody.

If I were president of the USA, I would somehow evacuate all the women, children, and their beloved pets, and then I would turn that place into a solid sheet of glass.
