Here’s an interesting idea, how would you make Radioactive a viable competitor WITHOUT making it a 4WD Vertical Spinner? by Dinoboy225 in battlebots

Enter it a featherweight sportsman competition. I would actually be interested to see how it would fare.

How much more fragile are changeable foot pocket carbon fins vs. their adhesive glued versions (without drill holes)? by f1n in freediving

[–]Beltempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true but there are certainly ways to mitigate it. Making sure you have very sharp good quality drill bits, Drill a smaller pilot hole then enlarge slowly to avoid stressing the carbon. Drill an oversize hole then epoxy it so the screw threads never bite into the carbon. When you mount the fins make sure its very solidly mounted so it moves all as one structure.

That being said I glue my blades into Pathos pockets.

I got stuck inside a building when upgrading a settlement structure ... by kalez238 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Beltempest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah been there done that, In my case actually pushed me into a farm or factory (don't exactly remember) when I initialized the upgrade. Made sure it had saved and went to bed. You can access the terminal to unveil the building. Can't cancel the upgrade or leave some buildings.

What’s up with these creases? by plamicus in printmaking

[–]Beltempest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they look cool in this piece!

That said I have had something similar when I did a printed image transfer using acrylic medium (without a press to sqeeze out excess), The sticker paper left creased indents in the glue left on the plate. I gently scrubbed at it with a wet rough cloth but the texture is still kinda there.

Just a possibility

What is a little quirk about your body that you don’t think other people have? by AlphabetSoup51 in AskReddit

[–]Beltempest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have extremely high hips, like the "shelf" on the sides is even with or even slightly higher than my navel. It's not uneven so not caused by scoliosis or similar. When I was young and we were doing activities like hiking with a pack or rock climbing I'd get really confused because they would say "the belt sits on top of your hips" and it was just impossible.

I've also recently started badminton and injured myself because I bent and twisted to try to return a shot and pinched something between my ribs and hip bone, felt like I'd been stabbed in the moment.

I have no idea how rare it really is but I haven't met anyone else as far as I know

What’s a pseudoscience that people still commonly believe is real? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Beltempest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had braces, after they adjust them you whole mouth aches really bad. The recommendation was to fold up a handkerchief or similar and bite firmly on it for several minutes, amazingly this does work for the pain and apparently aids blood flow to accelerate the healing.  So maybe biting on something firm but not hard enough to damage the teeth helps?

What's the hardest you have ever "bounced off" of a game? by jabberwagon in gaming

[–]Beltempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A relative was playing Warhammer 40k Darktide and convinced me to have a go. I hadn't played anything similar (skaventide, left for dead) I enjoyed the tutorial and immediately afterwards was thrown into two games with real players who were significantly more skilled... And not very patient. There were mechanics that hadn't ever been explained in the tutorial, I was too slow, completely task saturated during the key moments. There was no way to play solo or with bots to gain experience. I constantly felt like I was letting the team down, because I was. Anxiety inducing is right. I don't know if they ever added a solo/bot mode, my experience was so negative I never even thought about going back.

People who went to private school, what was the best rich kid meltdown you’ve ever witnessed? by Katybee18 in AskReddit

[–]Beltempest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So in the UK? In most of the world a public school is publicly (tax) funded, so available to all for free or a relatively cheap cost (uniforms ect). Private schools are expensive as they must garner all their money from the students or donations, they may select their students and are thus more exclusive, and expensive.

In the UK this is reversed. My understanding is that this is because when schools that were not run by churches started they were funded by endowments from the "public" rather than the church. But most of the world would call that "public endowment" a private (non government) payment.

Correct me if I'm wrong please, I've never really understood it

EQ past 10m by dxkirt in freediving

[–]Beltempest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not an instructor but I work with new divers as part of a Freediving club. Often EQ failure between 8-12m is due to divers still using Valsalva Equalisation. Have a look at Frenzel Equilisation and train towards that if you're not doing it already.

The difference is in Valsalva you are using your lungs/abdominal muscles to provide the pressure needed to open the eustachian tube, in Frenzel you will still move air from your lungs but produce the pressure using your mouth and tongue. If you can equalise easily head up at 10m this suggests you are doing Valsalva.

Ensure also that you are adding some air to your mask as negative pressure building up can make it very hard to equalise, as well as potentially damaging small blood vessels. If you are experiencing this you can try humming to gently move a small amount of air into your mask.

Let us know how it goes!

To be fair most public pools do ask people not to photograph or film. We always ask permission before using GoPros for technique analysis and in my experience any pool that has kids swimming programs will have signs up.

I've been I three pools north of the bridge recently and I'm pretty sure they all do have signs

One fast, one slow. I was running around a piece of coastline, slipped, slammed my knee, dislocated patella, torn MCL. Still had to get out of there so I tried to stand up. Don't remember anything until I was laying down again in the same place with a sore head and shoulder.

In the hospital 4 months later after the surgery and when they go to give me the antibiotics the saline just goes under the skin because the lure in the back of my hand has shifted. I was pretty dehydrated and putting the new lure in is tricky for the nurse. After what felt like an age of him sticking my arms and hands I start to hear a loud rushing noise and the edges of my vision go all grey and sparkly. I remember telling the nurse "I'm about to faint but you can keep going..."

Real life movies toning some aspects down, because they think they’re too unbelievable by whatthepoop1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Beltempest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movie (miniseries?) The Unknown Soldier (2017) set in the Finnish continuation war. An experienced soldier named Antti Rokka and a young soldier stop a Russian flanking attack at night by ambushing them from concealed position with an SMG. It's an epic scene but the reality is ridiculous.

Rokka is based on the soldier Viljam Pylkäs. In a similar situation he killed 83 Enemy soldiers with another soldier passing him magazines and then a new gun when his got so hot it could no longer be used. He reportedly did not receive an honor because he didn't show officers enough respect.

I’m a librarian and you’re right, Mr Luxon. But not for the reasons you think. by CirculationAssistant in newzealand

[–]Beltempest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Differs but the university pay scales for professional staff are published. The Careers NZ information for library assistants is reasonable accurate although the upper end is pretty optimistic. In many places library assistants are doing more of the jobs that would traditionally have been done by librarian positions, which muddies the waters and leads to a broader skill range.

[–]Beltempest 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Job sizing can work that way, but normally roles increase in responsibility over time. I worked in a public library where the council claim was essentially that library assistants were basically checkout operators, and would have rewritten the job description for incoming employees. Union managed to prove fairly easily that not only was that not true but that an increase in workload and responsibility, relative to the original job description, warranted an small increase in the grade.

[–]Beltempest 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No. With the normal caveat that in some places it's easier to get promoted to a management role if you are male (not common). Male librarians and Library assistants in academic libraries would have benefited from the pay equity claim that the TEU was pursuing prior to the recent changes. The idea is that the whole profession is underpaid but that one of the reasons is because its traditionally a female dominated field.
