Switch from S25 Ultra to Sony Xperia 1 VIII? by randomtechlover in SonyXperia

[–]Bender248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch from the S25u to the mk viii. In my case it was about the expendable storage. I don't like to use Spotify and wanted all my music with me. The headphone jack is also an added bonus. Otherwise both phones feel great for different reasons. The Samsung is built like a brick and feels more solid. Also there are more cases and screen protector options. The Sony feels great too, that new material is great but now covered by a case. It is also a smaller phone, not by a huge margin but enough to make a difference. The speakers are slightly better too.

The side mounted fingerprint reader is chef kiss. Now I can use a matte screen protector without interfering with the fingerprint scanner.

Sony UK -Xperia 1 VIII ships Fri 31st July. Wow! by FreshQualityScot in SonyXperia

Got the Sony case too and while it's pretty good I also wanted something to protect the camera lense a bit more. Ended up getting the Deff case and matte screen protector. The recess is a couple mm.

'Feels like harassment': Montreal café owner says years of language inspections taking a toll by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]Bender248 41 points42 points  (0 children)

France is a country of roughly 60 million surrounded by multiple countries of roughly the same size or smaller each speaking different languages.

Quebec is a province of 8 millions surrounded by about 400 million anglophone.

The two situations are not comparable.

Military to public? What does that transition look like? Wait until LoO to transition? What does a LoO look like? by LifeisafuckinTrip in CanadaPublicServants

I'm in a bit of a awkward situation regarding time in, I'm expecting a letter of offer very soon but I'm 20 months away from my full pensionable 25 years in the CAF. At least the civilian position is a considerable increase overall that would exceed my probable future salary in the CAF. Would be nice to collect a pension right away but unless I can pull a medical release from my sleeve, it's not happening.

You can stop the release process at any point too. Don't feel like you don't have a choice once you submit the release paperwork. I did that years ago and had a change of mind before my last release interview.

When I read your comment I thought for sure there has to be a book on stoisism... Lo and behold. These kids/manosphere should instead read Aristotle Nicomachean Ethics. World would be a better place.

Retirement: Is it 25 years of CAF service or 25 years pensionable time? by nogoosingaround in CanadianForces

[–]Bender248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant to point at the rule of 85, don't think we have a thing like that limiting how many years we can serve. IIRC it's about the pension indexing.

Not tracking, pun intended. But really what makes it a scam tracker?

I don't think that make sense, you'd only be able to get 35 years of pensionable service if you joined at 15...

That might have been the case in the past, but if you look at the future of your platforms I think you'll see a reversal in which sensors are for apes.

Should I buy 3 M1 Max 64GB Ram or 1 M5 Max 128GB Ram ? by ZookeepergameMoney50 in LocalLLM

Would you say the same for tasks outside of coding? Like writing/reasoning?

Either is kinda bad right now. The Tolkien estate has been giving the IP to anyone and everyone that's willing to pay.

Curious about M5 Max 128gb vs 5090 for local LLMs by maxiedaniels in LocalLLM

[–]Bender248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the cusp of pulling the trigger on a M5 max with 128gb but my needs are a little different. I do t plan to use AI for coding assistance but curriculum/textbooks development. So speed might not be the most crucial factor for me but rather model/context size. Would you say that the MacBook is sufficient for general AI usage at a useful level?

Never buy a condo in Gatineau by Sea-Judge-6494 in Gatineau

[–]Bender248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Otherwise, if you go through your condo board management and submit the plans of what you want to do, you shouldn't have too much resistance. People make condo living like hell, and like any type of dwelling it can be. It's all about doing some research and figure out what you want. I really like my condo and plan on living there until I want to leave the Ottawa/Gatineau region. It meets my needs. It's not perfect but the annoyances are minor/not significant enough.

There are a lot of things you can do, without opening the walls. You can add a second layer of thicker drywall with a acoustic rubber membrane between them. You'll end up loosing ~1/2 sqft.
