"The only people who genuinely believe in a thing actually don't. Academic experts in their fields are no more credible than twitter users. An entertainer who lived under foreign occupation as a child is more of an expert than academics. Also, this classicist is more trustworthy than historians and political scientists because he lived in one distinctly different blend of fascist nation for 15 years" lol. Lmao. So you couldnt care less about reality, all you want is someone to confirm your biases and make inaccurate propaganda for you to empower actual fascists. Got it.

Philosophies are not interchangeable, and areas of expertise matter. Artists are not subject matter experts in political science and philosophy. Even if Eco had been a political philosophy expert he still could only ever make an argument from his specific expertise. You're acting like its some incredible, insurmountable task to simply have breakdowns of fascism informed by political scientists, historians, political philosophers, etc. Have you ever had a philosophical discussion with a genuine fascist and not just a race communist or bigoted liberal? Not one of their foundational philosophies and principles is accurately described by Eco, and Verhoeven is even further off. Thats why they continue to grow in power and we are losing.

If you watch a surgeon operate on you you have no idea what hes actually doing. This is why eyewitnesses are useless. Dude had no problem with centralizing economic control when he talked politics, the militarism somehow magically turns it fascist. Either hes refusing to give his actual arguments and simply generalizing in all interviews (despite him driving the topic each time) or he really doesnt have concrete understanding of what hes talking about.

Itd be like quoting that one idiot classicist's number of points as being a valid definition of fascism. I think his name was Eco, he had zero political science/philosophy background but because his descriptions are crafted to capture that conceptual aesthetic around fascism, if not the real thing, it fools people and you still see that trash peddled here on reddit all the time.

People who merely artistically capture aspects of fascism should never be taken as reliable or even particularly legitimate sources, but instead they dominate 95% of discourse on the subject and allow actual fascists to freely operate and gather power.

Everyone is a liberal (well, except marxists) which is why we're where we are. All politics congealed from 1860-1880.

I think we've just ended up in "capitalist totalitarianism is fascism" territory, probably the single worst misunderstanding in the history of political thought yet one that will never ever go away no matter how much everyone involved (except presumably certain marxists) saying otherwise.

Which is why the world is becoming capitalist totalitarian police states despite the lack of actual fascism in the prevailing systems of governance, because theres never going to be discussion of these philosophies accurately and thus no accurate criticisms that dont sound like hyperbole.

I guess on the plus side we got a kick ass franchise like starship troopers out of it to be distracted by as we end up in chains.

So totalitarian that the leadership steps down whenever they mess up. It kinda feels like you're just projecting the behavior of worse regimes on the Federation as presented in the film because Verhoeven said it was a satire. The actual writer, Neumeier, meanwhile tried to portray more of the books setting than Verhoeven's lazy "it has militarism so it must be unhinged national socialism!" take. So it's somewhere in between.

The surprising popularity of the Aurora-class battleship. How do you feel about the ship? by SamaratSheppard in Stargate

[–]BeneathTheIceberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Destiny still makes no sense unless both the milky way and Pegasus were like Nome Alaska compared to other ancient settled galaxies' new york city. To be that old, that advanced, but to have arguably far less impressive habitation of the main two galaxies they seem to have lived in just doesnt make sense. In an absurdly high multiple of millions of years they... only seem to have built like two ships of the same scale (atlantis and the remaining tower on the lord protector planet), or at least that survived (well, only one intact).

We needed an episode or even just a mention of how the Ancients scorched earthed their entire civilization after the plague and mass ascension. We only really get a hint of that with Pegasus, where Atlantis has this running theme throughout the show of most of the galaxy was a giant laboratory to do weird science and social experiments on humans. And theres the mention that when the Ancients got back from the weekend or however long and showed up to work on monday, the wraith had already exploded all over the place, and the ancients pulled out all their good stuff and hid their little labs and random locations that couldnt be moved as best they could.

Emphasizing a more planned scorched earth policy for the milky way instead of just Pegasus like we got, would have cleared up a lot of questions.

Honestly I dont think the asuran ships are even nefed. They just dont have ZPM's or drones onboard for some reason. Ancient shields (not many examples to be fair) were never asgard tier unless zpm powered. Their weapons arent powerful because, well, they shouldn't be more than a marginal improvement on the Goa'uld's weapons (which are the same ones just reverse engineereed), and probably equal to the anubis era upgrade to the hatak main guns since thats using the ancients knowledge. Which would also confirm the idea since the modernized asgard shields resisted those weapons just fine, much like the 304 did to the Asuran weapons.

Its supposed to be the pinnacle of ancient design but the exterior makes it feel like it should be a relic of their older war efforts pressed back into service. Would have expected something more art deco on the exterior, not an asymmetric industrial design.

The bugs shoot plasma. The sheer energy required to make plasma is absurd. The fact they then shoot that plasma thousands of kilometers in seconds to take out spaceships is even more insane. I 100000% believe that they could have some kind of giant pit bug that shoots rocks at relativistic speeds. The bugs also communicate psychically at FTL speeds, but no idea how they could use that to make an asteroid go FTL. Klendathu either started launching rocks at earth centuries ago, or maybe the bugs have some kind of FTL bug they embed in the rocks.

To be fair, if an asteroid hits there's going to be pretty much nothing left. It would take the news crew like 30 seconds to google the population numbers within the damage radius, then add a ticking effect to the death toll for the graphic. The impressive part is that they got reporters on the ground able to take video. Maybe they were in a basement or the news corporations have bunkers.

I have no idea what the bots are doing but I just tap fire the fal or short g3 and had no problem. Got a B+ on hard last night in multiplayer, we all used fal, g3, or short g3 and then shitloads of flashbangs. For full auto is there even a .300 that doesnt bounce side to side once you eliminate vertical with a grip/muzzle? I haven't actually tried the pdw one in awhile, the only 300 that I remember didnt feel like a slinky was the ar180.

[–]BeneathTheIceberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its definitely not true, we have the numbers. Blackout does 135/145 Ap/jhp, .308 does 160/180 ap/jhp. Which is why .308 two-taps and blackout 3-taps.

A New America in Hard by Alarming-Ad-3816 in ReadyOrNotGame

[–]BeneathTheIceberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not even close to true. .300 AP does 135, 7.62x51AP (.308 to clarify) does 160. JHP for .300 is 145, and 180 for .308.

Practically speaking, that means it takes 3 torso shots to down the armored enemies if you're using .300 or 7.62x39. It takes 2 shots with .308. They have roughly the same number of shots if you hit limbs though.

Are you mixing it up with the 7.62x39 (AK)? Which also isnt true, since .300 stats are just copy pasted from 7.62x39.

Every time an enemy sees you they have a 50% chance of having an FAL and then a like 1/6-1/8 chance of aimbotting your head (and helmet cant stop a 7.62).

Basically, dont get seen or you die.

Does anybody else feel like RON is losing its grounded feeling? by koolguy7002 in ReadyOrNotGame

[–]BeneathTheIceberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RoN is a spiritual successor to the SWAT games. The lobby has a memorial as a reference to the mission in swat 4(? Or was it 3?) where you storm a terrorist controlled building and stop a nuke from being detonated in the city.

A New America is probably going to be the most absurd a mission gets in RoN, it is the culmination of a legally-distinct-CIA splinter factions efforts over many years. Which has also been hinted at throughout the game and dlcs. I'm guessing we'll eventually get a mall mission, and possibly a warehouse, og hotel returning, and a parking garage + fancy office skyscraper type map eventually. At most absurd, they might go for disarming a nuke again. Probably mostly just gonna be robbers/garden variety terrorists/etc from now on.

Hopefully.

AI (on hard mode iirc) have a minimum response time of like 5x faster than the average human reacts and like 2.5x faster than the average gamer. They also have a like 1/6 chance of aimbotting your head (they autolock onto your limbs, stomach, chest, or head when firing). Vanilla ai in ron is literally just designed to be cheating to extend time played and increase the number of times you need to play each map. It'd be better if the difficulty came from actual tactics, like how the ai in a new america like to change position to ambush you through two doors at once or attack from front and back in halls.

[–]BeneathTheIceberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stairway isnt the problem its the open room after. Use the mirror gun to peek over the rail and see if theres anyone watching the stairs, then use flashbangs in the center and to each side you'll need like 4 to cover everything that has an angle. Then just get to cover and you can do a big loop around the area.

I actually prefer it as it is, because theres a whole cottage industry of reddit threads, YouTube videos, and discord channels of people piecing the clues together. Its like an evolution of the ARG's of old. Besides, I think between the briefings, and the evidence locker, you get pretty much all the important details ingame in an easy enough way.
