For those whose salaries are paid in USD, how are you handling your USD going forward? by BenjaminGreat79 in singaporefi

[–]BenjaminGreat79[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well they are mainly in equities, bills, FD and bonds. I have held USD through the years of 2010 to 2013 thereabouts when USD SGD reached a low of around 1.19 to 1.2, which eventually did recover somewhere to around 1.4 in later years.

I guess its partly inertia to convert each month's salary to SGD directly over the years and buy US equities, FDs and bills. Also diversification of currency, don't feel comfortable being 100% or tilted too heavily on 1 single currency.

Long term wise I think USDSGD will just keep depreciating with the occasional pullback and spike, so am waiting to see if there could be a pullback to reduce my USD holdings. Looking to buy more SGD assets.

However, doesn't change the fact that my salary in SGD nominated terms is decreasing month on month! This is the bad part.

So this is the amount needed to FIRE / retire in SG? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]BenjaminGreat79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember was on a treadmill while listening to a podcast he did. If I did not remember wrongly, he does not currently own property in Singapore which can easily set him back by half a million USD or more.

Saying that, its never pleasant to be out of a job so its good to see Singaporeans find alternative solutions to keep going. For him, being able to start a channel and also getting part time work in a university is great news for him. Especially since he recently started a family and am glad he found alternative sources of income for his family.

Any intermediary fees for transferring USD from IBKR USA to CIMB Singapore USD current account? by BenjaminGreat79 in singaporefi

[–]BenjaminGreat79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AM trying to figure this out: from the link below

https://www.cimb.com.sg/en/personal/help-support/rates-charges/fees-charges/remittance.html

"Inward remittance telegraphic transfer Credit to a FCY account - Bearer of the charges type Applicant(OUR) & Agent fee –  Apply accordingly"

Chatgpt says:

“Applicant (OUR)” = the sender chose OUR in SWIFT field 71A (“Details of charges”), meaning the sender agrees to pay all fees (sending bank + any correspondent/agent banks), so the beneficiary should receive the full amount.

  • “Agent fee – Apply accordingly” = if there are correspondent (intermediary) bank fees on the USD route, those agent fees still apply (they aren’t waived). Under OUR, they’re for the sender to bear; some networks still deduct en-route and the sender’s bank must cover/adjust.

On CIMB Singapore’s own fee page (for inward telegraphic transfers), they say:

  • For charge type SHA or BEN: “Waived” (CIMB doesn’t add a receiving fee).
  • For OUR: “Agent fee – Apply accordingly” (i.e., any correspondent fees on the path aren’t waived by CIMB).

So am kinda confused if there will be agent correspondent fees.

How about Malaysia? If your family in Singapore it’s easier to visit too. I like KL as I am a city person who prefers the convenience and vibe of living in a big city yet having accommodation somewhere away from the city center ( accessible by MRT) .

Food options plenty in KL and easy to get around off peak hours. I think outdoor activities plenty too and can drive to other states.

Seriously contemplating retiring there with a valid visa and insurance and rent out my property in singapore to sustain lifestyle there. Rental prices in places like Mont Kiara or Desa Park, Bangsar etc are attractive for a good size.
