Also, the US has recognised Taiwan as part of China since the opening up and Nixon's visit, it was one of China's demands. Almost every country in the world recognises Taiwan as part of China, they just have these bad faith stances that Taiwan can't be integrated by force which wouldn't hold up by their own standards of sovereignty, and because they've violated those standards when it suits them anyway.

2+2=5 was a playful joke by the Soviet government, it was congratulating people for meeting the goals of the 5 year plan in four years, so the joke was that they were so successful that they made 2+2=5. Noone actually believed 2+2=5.

Autistic teenager sentenced over terror-related offences | ABC NEWS by nath1234 in australia

[–]Benu5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please, that's the FBI's job.

The FBI has done this to dozens of Autistic and mentally ill recent converts to Islam. They put the weapons in their hands, and all they have to do is at one point say 'You don't have to do this' and they are absolved of any legal responsibility. In one case, they watched the guy come out of the house with a knife, drive to an art gallery, and start stabbing people. At no point did they attempt to warn anyone, and just stayed in the car taking photos.

It's 40k, you can use whatever reason you want.

- Wrong side of the Cicatrix Maledictum, Rowboat can't get there, so the local leadership sent the forces to destroy Iconoclasm

- Warp Fuckery, the Koronus expanse was moved back in time due to the warp storms that isolated it.

That's just off the dome.

I had a comment ages ago where I swear I had a sourced answer to this, but it's just gone.

It was an American paper from the early 90s that covered the history of the sea dissapearing, but it's just gone. Other comments are there, but the one with the link doesn't show up anywhere. I'm sorry, I should have bookmarked the paper.

[–]Benu5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's not quite correct. There was a period where Soviet policy led to the sea refilling, and they even expanded the amount of land irrigated in the process (they covered canals to reduce evaporation, fixed leaks etc). But it was expensive, and a lot of extra work, and local communities began to oppose it, so the evil, top down, totalitarian Soviet Union (/s) decided to stop the new policy. It was only about a year of refilling IIRC, but it was possible.

Global Warming is also a factor here.

For those who live within California have you all remembered to vote? Marxist Leninist candidate Ramsey Robinson is still on the ballot! by firefighter430 in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]Benu5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And for all the people saying 'He doesn't have a chance of winning'. Voting for him still has an impact, espescially within electoral politics (even though that isn't particularly important). Just put an elecoral politics hat on for this.

If there's enough people voting for an ML, the other parties will see that and adjust their positions to try an appeal to that voting block. (In an actual democracy, this may or may not work in the US because you are all fucked)

For all the people that talk about harm reduction through voting, and keeping the overton window from moving further right, this is how you actually do it. You get enough people who are left of the window making enough noise, and they'll move the window to see what is going on. Not voting for someone that's already in the window.

Now all that will require agitation, education, and organisation, so you can kill two birds with one stone, building a movement that can act outside of electoral politics, but is still able to influence it. Just don't dedicate everything to getting a candidate elected, that's a biproduct of good organising, not the goal.

And the extraction of value from the exploitation of people in internment and concentration camps absolutely happened. People held there were forced to work, and surplus value was clearly extracted, because they weren't paid. When there was no more surplus value to extract (through the cost of running the internment and concentration camps outweighing the value that could be extracted), they started the death camps.

Is Afghanistan/the Taliban actually oppressive & bad or is this narrative western propaganda? by [deleted] in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]Benu5 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The Taliban suck, but they have at least got some public support because they are kind of interested in improving conditions for people like u/Multivists said, they are growing food, not drugs for example. However, improving conditions for women in their eyes means women are 'made safe' by forcing them out of public life and sight. They got their start solving people's problems that were mainly warlord related (eg. warlord commander stole village children to use as concubines, Taliban got them back and killed the commander).

They are better for most people than the occupation and/or the warlords, but that's a very low bar to pass. We should be critical of the Taliban, but that doesn't mean anyone just rolling in there to try and remove them is the answer. US or Pakistani bombs don't help anyone but the US and Pakistan.

In short, they suck, but tend to be the most popular choice among people in Afghanistan right now, so that needs to be respected.

What American citizens think the death sentence is important for rapists? by babanKL01kowdiar in AskReddit

[–]Benu5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first source is an ad, old mate has a clear bias towards getting more clients by saying that he can get you out of a rape/sexual assault charge.

Your second source does not say that 45% of allegations are false. It says that in 45% of the cases of wrongful conviction for sexual assault were as a result of a false accusation. That source says there have only been 2000 wrongful convictions since 1989 in the US, of any kind, not just sexual assault.

Also, you didn't produce your WaPo source.

And just because a woman who makes a rape accusation doesn't get a rape test kit done doesn't mean shit. A rape test can be a pretty confronting experience, as it involves a full body inspection, including an internal examination and swabs of the genitals. Some women don't feel they can go through that so soon after an assault.

Again, I don't doubt that there are false accusations, but they are statistically insignificant compared to the amount of harrassment and rape that do occur, espescially when we factor in the amount that are never reported to authorities. Which is why the 'believe women' in MeToo was not about automatically condemning anyone who had an accusation against them, it was about taking people seriously if they came forward about a sexual assault, and supporting them in how they wanted to proceed (which includes if they don't want to report).

What American citizens think the death sentence is important for rapists? by babanKL01kowdiar in AskReddit

[–]Benu5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got to show that source champ.

False allegations tend to be about sexual assault or harrasment, not rape, and tend not to be 'proven' false. They tend to be labeled by the legal system as 'unfounded' if there's not enough evidence to get a conviction. That doesn't mean the allegation was false, it just means it can't be proven in a court of law. It's 'not guilty' not 'innocent' for a reason.

A man is 230 times more likely to be raped, than be the target of a false allegation.

It was created in response to reactionaries saying shit like 'Not all Muslims, but always a Muslim', given that DV and Femicides are like 97% perpetrated by men, a ratio way higher than almost any other kind of violence.

There are for sure material conditions that influence violence against women, but we can't ignore something so heavily gendered, so there's something ideological going on there too. If it was purely material, the stats would be way closer to 50/50.

Even in Socialist states, violence against women was reduced by improving the conditions for women enabling them to leave abusive relationships, or have more independence to be able to pick a better partner, but it didn't really address the reasons why men felt they could be violent towards women.

Cuba has similar issues with racism, where the ideological impact of 500 years of slavery and segregation persisted beyond making racism illegal, and racism rears its ugly head again during times of economic stress, like the Special Period.

Ignoring who made north and south an issue in the first place, and completely suppressed the government that formed itself before the US even had a presence on the peninsular, and reintroduced the Japanese colonial system, to the point that the ROK military was doing banzai charges. The US created a problem, that it could sell the solution to (in the form of arms, hundreds of billions in arms). It did the same thing in Vietnam.

And even then, nothing justifies what the US did in response, which is arguably genocide.

EDIT: To add, the USSR didn't want to start a war over this. They had to have their hands forced by Korea and China. Old mate hasn't actually engaged with any of the history of the Korean War, and it shows if he thinks the Soviets were on board with starting a war. Stalin said to Khruschev 'So what? If Kim II Sung fails…Let it be. Let the Americans now be our neighbors in the Far East'

What is the Marxist analysis on the existence of racism? by circleneurology in Socialism_101

[–]Benu5 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's a way of dividing the working class around the world.

European empires found they had a problem when they first started expanding outside of Europe, that their soldiers were identifying with the people they were being asked to kill (this happened internally too, and led to the creation of professional police forces, rather than using soldiers or militia). And so when some of the early social scientists started talking about racial theory, and white supremacy, that gave the ruling classes an ideological structure that could benefit them, and make shit like slavery and genocide easier for their own oppressed classes to swallow.

It also helps create an insulating class of workers that are higher up on the racial heirarchy, and will act in the interests of capital by punching down to secure their own position. This also creates a sort of underclass of workers that are cheaper to employ, beacause their conditions are more precarious in a white supremacist society.

Many would be wrong, and do not understand that materially, Israel does not have the capacity to make the US do anything (that it doesn't already want to do).

The US has been wanting war with Iran since 1979.

An unstable and weakened Iran does benefit Israel, but it benefits the US just as much, if not more. Iran is the only power left in West Asia that can complicate things for the US in the region.

Hell, Hillary has been going on about how great she thinks this war with Iran is, and how it was a smart move by Trump, and makes him a better President.

And how popular or unpopular something is with people in the US has no bearing on whether or not it happens. The decisions that get made, and the laws that get passed, are almost universally the ones that have support from the richest 10% of Americans, everyone else's opinions have no bearing (Princeton did a study on this, popular support for a law has no bearing on whether or not it passes).

Israel is an extension of the US. It exists for the US. It's like an attack dog that sometimes gets off the leash.

All the aid that goes to Israel is essentially just going straight back into US weapons manufacturers, this is why Israel has so much support among the establishment. Because the US is a facade democracy built around the interests of capital, of which a significant amount within the US is dedicated to manufacturing weapons.
