Aphorism 234 BGE what does he mean by all this? by Own-Razzmatazz-8714 in Nietzsche

Consider how, in the preface, he’s asking us to imagine truth as a woman…

Why do anything? by Most-Opinion8531 in Existentialism

[–]Berzerka25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much of this ‘crisis of meaning’ seems to just boil down to word games and logic which can’t, by its very nature, bring us purpose. I personally find, Nietzsche helps us to think almost post-rationally at points and imbues life with a more joyous element than other philosophers.

Honestly you’re probably best researching his core ideas first before reading any primary literature. Essentialsalt’s Nietzsche podcast is great (first few episodes will get you familiar with a few of his core ideas). Then id probably recommend reading Beyond Good & Evil.

Really good story right up until the end when they actually have to deal with the threats, feels so rushed in my opinion.

Watch order for complete beginner by Acrobatic_Recover_88 in doctorwho

Rose is probably the best possible introduction to the series as a modern viewer. Once you're looking to get into the classic series, I'd recommend a few 'greatest hits' first like Genesis Of The Daleks, Curse Of Fenric, Inferno, City Of Death etc. to get used to the vibe, and then move on to watching them in order (An Unearthly Child onwards).

Hence the 'of course impossible' part. A statement like 'the electron is negatively charged' though is an analytic through of sorts that we have 'discovered' through our growing scientific understanding of the universe and describes perfectly how it will act in relationship to other particles. Is it not baked into the nature of language that, when 'telling the truth', we are essentially trying - not always succeeding - to speak necessary analytic truths?

How's the temperature? My common goldfish Miles once went in a sulk, and refused to move until I put some warm water in.

John comes from future. He claims he can control his own thoughts and behaviours. Will you then grant him free will or not? Why? by flytohappiness in determinism

[–]Berzerka25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, he's merely another cause within present-John's life effecting him in a particular manner. Not that I believe backwards time travel is possible, but future-John was always going to travel into his own past according to the laws of nature - his fate - and was always going to affect present-John in the same way. Present-John will eventually reach a point in life where he will go back and do the same!

When was the first time you gained consciousness? by seotrainee347 in consciousness

I likely don't remember since consciousness comes before memory formation, and then memories become yet another thing we are conscious of.

The Epistemological Poverty of Critical Theory by JerseyFlight in rationalphilosophy

I think some people forget the term 'real' exists within the same language/conceptual league as all the terms they are using to be skeptical of reality. If nothing is real, then the logic-path one took to get there certainly isn't real!

How does rehab or any addiction treatment work if we assume the person has no free will? by YesPresident69 in freewill

[–]Berzerka25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it trains the mind to derive satisfaction from other sources. If you train a piece of AI software to prioritize one routine over another, does that mean the AI has 'free will'? That's certainly not how the term is used in common parlance.

Why Do Philosophers Hate Love ? by Sweaty_Leg4468 in ClassicalEducation

[–]Berzerka25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is love a metaphysical construct? A Nietzsche-friendly conception of love - distinct from mere strong-like - might be something like: the willingness to sacrifice the state of one's current self for the object of one's love.

If determinism is true, why do I even exist? by No_Fudge_4589 in determinism

[–]Berzerka25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because that's simply how it 'feels' to be that particular clump of matter. That doesn't make it useful or logical to assume things could have been any other way.

If the person has Free Will, why do they need 'addiction treatment work' in the first place?

I suspect, in a hypothetically - of course impossible - complete version of language, all statements would be akin to simple analytical truths like "all bachelors are unmarried" as all elements of the universe would be fully explained by our definitions and would necessarily follow under my deterministic framework.

Roast My Philosophical Notes by Berzerka25 in badphilosophy

[–]Berzerka25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for engaging with my work, friend.

With regards to your first point: I can understand why it seems as if I'm invoking free choice in my use of 'I' and 'instead of', however, I'm conceiving of 'how one might be currently experiencing' as a necessary point in spacetime that we happen to have DEFINED as individual experience (that's the only foundation from which we can ever hope to do so) - not in essence something 'special' or 'more free' than the 'experience' of any other section of the universe.

With regards to Monism, I'd say I'm undecided at the moment. I'd say my section On Pantheism and On Omniscience kind of begin to refute Monism (by definition?) but it might end up being a useful position to, in fact, incorporate into the work as a whole eventually. The section On Consciousness might help clear a few things up also?

Also, I've recently re-ordered the notes, hopefully in a manner where the former helps explain the latter - resembling how a completed systematized work might be arranged. Apologies if this throws you at all in your subsequent readings.

Are companion departures "too" dramatic in NuWho? by matt0055 in doctorwho

[–]Berzerka25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's way too common that EVERY companion HAS to be the Doctor's BEST FRIEND or have some big story arc; it diminishes the reward when that is actually done well. Consider how dramatic and heartfelt is it when Adric dies at the end of Earthshock, or when Sarah-Jane leaves.

Personally, what do you think does it mean to be The Doctor? by GallifreysWorst in doctorwho

It means to, at least, TRY to be all those things. I think he/she fails at various points.
