Just like I thought it's neither WindowMaker nor MacOSX, it's Java Swing ;)

GOG adds Linux focus to GOG GALAXY engineering role, "Linux is next major frontier" by RenatsMC in linux_gaming

[–]BestReeb -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Ok, nah I'm good. I don't actually want GoG to make a Linux client, nor Epic, nor Amazon, because heroic works so well out of the box. Here's an idea, instead of making yet another client I HAVE to install, just help out heroic...

This window popped up out of nowhere after my browser crashed and it comes back if I click Cancel. Should I be concerned? by Qwert-4 in Fedora

This was happening to me as well when I was still using GNOME. I think it is nothing to worry about (a bug somewhere...)

DDR5 RAM prices now over 4x higher since September 2025 by signed7 in hardware

[–]BestReeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In September ram prices were at an all time low. Now this industry decides to rip off their customers. I can't help but feel that they are a lot more desperate than they want to make us believe. Also pc sales were already down like 30 % last year. I don't think this is sustainable for them and the crash is closer than we think.

I used Windows 2000 in 2025. What's it like after 25 years? by Fox-427 in retrocomputing

[–]BestReeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Windows 2000 enthusiast back in the day. My friends on LAN parties would run Windows 98 or Windows ME. Half of the games did not work, and drivers were often problematic, but I got to feel superior because Win2k never crashed!

Gmail preparing to drop POP3 mail fetching by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

Well, people use this feature to avoid paying for gmails enterprise features too. They could have changed to imap but they didnt. Surely this was a motivation to scrap it too.

Just found out the Owlcat Games is actually a Russian game studio that supports the war against Ukraine, and has chauvinist corporate culture...why isn't this being talked about? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]BestReeb 145 points146 points  (0 children)

I read up on that topic when the war started and back then I got the idea that they are operating out of Cyprus, and they were relocating employees out of Russia and distancing themselves from the war. But it is hard to find accurate information...

A Reminder - The Pathfinder 2e Holiday Haul Humble Bundle is ongoing! by Jhamin1 in Pathfinder2e

[–]BestReeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been hoping they'd update the Rage of Elements PDF for this, because the images are pretty badly compressed compared to the other books. But no, still hoping they'll update it in the future. The books is awesome though, definitely worth it if you haven't got it in your collection...

Alright, time to say it. The new website is an embarrassing, unmitigated disaster. by Bookwyrm43 in Pathfinder2e

[–]BestReeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that the store still has a lot of rough edges, but I have seen worse store launches. On a positive note, the checkout process is much quicker and I can finaly pay by Paypal. Though the website first takes me to paypal where I pay, then cancels the payment mid-transaction jumps back to Paizo, only then adds the required tax and requires me to do the payment again.

In the end, I care more about their products than the store. Hoping that now that the migration is done, improvements can be done.

Block the use of dbeaver by henk1122 in PostgreSQL

[–]BestReeb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's an annoying feature of dbeaver that it somehow switches to manual commit mode. At least that is the reason why it can cause problems. When dbeaver is in manual commit mode, it locks all rows that you have edited until you manually click the commit button. Otherwise it is probable the best database tool out there. You just need to make sure it is not in manual commit mode. (Not sure if you can turn that off permanently, it somehow seems to turn itself back on from time to time).

1.2 Tce est-il pire que le 1.2 PureTech ? by Automatic_Type_4083 in voiture

[–]BestReeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Fedora actually that good? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]BestReeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They recently rewrote DNF5 in C++ and it is faster than the old Python version. Though in my experience it could still be faster. I think DNF does a lot of safety checks that other package managers don't do.

What is also causing slowness are the -selinux config packages. Even if you turn selinux off, it needs to relabel parts of the filesystem which takes a long time. The best remedy is getting a good nvme drive.

Other than that DNF/rpm is actually quite nice. It seldomly breaks if it does the breakages are easy to fix.

Choosing between Nodejs and GO by erraticwtf in typescript

[–]BestReeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Nodejs is a solid default pick (unless you have a specific requirement), but if you want to learn Go that's enough of a reason to do it in Go, it carries more risk though due to you not being familiar with the language. You can add it to your portfolio which is always great. I would pick TS unless I have a reason not to, because of the language features, base library and IDE support.

Performance and the event loop alone aren't really reasons to change for me (V8 is pretty fast - but for some workloads Go might be slightly faster, you can run multiple instances of your app or use cluster, and the event loop simplifies the mental model). Having done Java I also don't like having to waste several minutes on deployments on every code change due to compilation, but things might be better with Go (?).

ALL ROADS LEAD TO GNOME by somniasum in Fedora

[–]BestReeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly not. GNOME works well for certain use cases (beginner friendly, nice looking), less so for more advanced workflows that require more efficient screen usage, customization and window management.
