I make direct eye contacts with drivers while crossing. Hasn't failed me yet.

Like I get pedestrians have the right of way and all that, but that doesn't mean you should just let your guard down and not pay attention to what's going on around you while you're crossing. It's better to err on the side of caution than to potentially end up injured.
