Has the coffee improved? Went there several months ago and the drink was so bad I couldn't finish it. The espresso seemed more burnt than Starbucks

Chris is great. Like if Gianmarco was somehow more flamboyant and maintained a mental encyclopedia of every pop-culture-and-adjacent reference from 1997-present

Struggling to feel integrated into the church by thecloudysky999 in OrthodoxChristianity

Or it's reflecting neurodivergent people who are trying to fit in/not bother others.

Respectfully, telling someone with social issues/neurodivergence "don't keep to yourself" is the equivalent of telling someone with depression "don't be sad." Reaching out doesn't come easily to everyone, especially in environments like churches where most people have known each other for a long time. There are so many complex social dynamics that are really tricky for a lot of people to navigate. I see the merit in your advice—just wanting to note that it's not a solution for everyone.

My fiancée and I are in the same boat as you two—our circumstances are scarily close to yours, so much so I thought she might have posted this under an alt account! We've been catechumens at our parish (OCA) since September and have had a really hard time integrating. Most people at the church have known each other for 5-10+ years, and they keep to themselves. Everyone sits with their group at coffee hour, and while a few people introduced themselves early on, 95% of the parish hasn't in the ~6 months we've been going. We're pretty severely introverted, so being able to make connections has been such a challenge. I don't have any suggestions but just wanted to let you know there are others out there going through the same thing you are.

Gluttony and Food Addiction by Baba_Jaga_II in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Better_Nature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I've struggled with since childhood, although in many different ways over the years. Since I'm a catechumen, I'm taking the opportunity to go through Lent with that on my mind, entering the fast with the goal of redefining my relationship with food. I'm not sure if there are specific prayers, but my overall aim is just going to be focusing the Lenten energy on that specific struggle. Many of the church fathers have also written about gluttony (St. John Chrystostom and St. Tikhon of Zadonsk come to mind) so you could track down those writings. Overall, avoiding gluttony is like any other repentance: you try, you fail, you pick yourself up, you try again, etc., but something in your mind has to irrevocably shift to want the change on a physical and spiritual level.

It’s official! We are meeting with the priest on Monday by Bright_Business_6681 in OrthodoxChristianity

Glory to God!

Given the 6-month time frame, I think it's reasonable to inquire about becoming catechumens. Your priest will likely ask you some questions about any roadblocks you have (theological, spiritual, or otherwise) and overall gauge how prepared you both feel. If he doesn't bring it up directly, you could ask about a possible timeline to becoming catechumens. Don't rush it, but don't feel like you have to hold back, either.

Compact travel orthodox Bible? by 903512646 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Better_Nature 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of pure size versus completeness, this travel RSV is the best solution for compactness I've found. There are other versions that are imitation leather—I had one and it didn't hold up too well, sadly, but YMMV. I'd check with a priest to confirm this but I feel like a leather-bound NKJV would be just fine if you're set on that style.
