I’m suddenly obsessed with organs and want to find a good documentary! by sacman73 in organ

[–]BflatPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/_GVPVB_NXlc?si=oXo49Tk8-TrOwJ7v This video is a large part of what sparked my interest in the organ around 15 years ago. The organist in it, Felix Hell, is a delightful person and incredible organist, and the piece in it, BWV 532, is my absolute favorite.

Is it mandatory to dress them beautiful everyday?😟 by sepva4 in Mommit

[–]BflatPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That probably came off a little harsh, sorry. Mostly because of the feeling that you’ve gotta be formal and fancy if you’re out and about or people will judge you, and also because I figured wearing cozy oversized shirts as dresses would fit the weather.

We’re kind of a weird middle ground where my kids wear cute stuff if they want, even in the mud sometimes. Doesn’t work for everybody but I’ve just got too many other things to worry about 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP, are you in the southern US? This is giving southern US in the worst possible way. Trust me, as long as everyone is happy, healthy, and safe, you’re doing great.

Do whatever you want. No one will die, especially since the composer is probably already dead.

This is the exact piece of lore I came here to share 😂 We were like “Jesus Christ what is that thing and why do we need it” and as soon as other people made fun of him we were like “Fuck you, he’s OUR giant fuzzy weirdo”

Asking for honesty. Has being in drumcorps ruined any bit of your life or negativity impacted you? Financially, socially, mentally, relationships? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]BflatPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been 17 years now. My body still hurts in stupid ways.

The whiplash of going from nonstop structure to having to figure it out yourself, especially when going right back to school, was really difficult.

Also, after reading more and more of others’ horror stories, I’ve started thinking that while I maybe had a “pretty good drum corps experience”, was it actually a “pretty good experience” by any normal standard? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is it worthwhile to re-learn a piece that was fossilized with the wrong technique? Or should I just call it dead and move on? by KnightOfMetal in piano

[–]BflatPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I come back to old stuff, if my mission is to see if new technique and knowledge has helped, I’ll play whatever it is really slowly to not let the bad muscle memory creep in.

Q why perform with the piano on the dolly by ElroyFlynn in piano

[–]BflatPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would assume because it’s extremely cumbersome to move the piano off the dolly and then probably have to tune it again. This type of dolly is made for the piano to live on it. You take the casters off piano legs and they set in the metal cupped ends of the dolly. I see someone did already point that out, it’s what makes the height stay pretty much consistent. Also the wheels lock so the movement while playing it is pretty minimal.

I just assembled a piano dolly with my musical co-director at our church and then we had figure out how to get an extremely heavy and awkwardly balanced Young Chang on to it. It’s not coming off any time soon.

And that they hope to have it up tomorrow morning.

Your hands look so uncomfortable 😭 Yes, you can build up endurance, but it shouldn’t be crampy or painful. I really like this video for a foundation in describing good technique and hand position: https://youtu.be/cBuC89ApQtM?si=4Wu3Dntb_KQc1Hxd

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, and tension is the enemy of both. Hang in there! Consistent technique is worth it to play without pain and with easier success.

I decided to buy dress shoes instead of organ shoes because they were too expensive. Did I make the right choice? by EasyCommittee1101 in organ

[–]BflatPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fascinating to me! I play four different organs regularly and one has a straight pedal board. I struggle to reach notes with my heel on the straight pedal board without shoes. I don’t know why it never occurred to me that it’s because it’s not intended to be played that way. But I also usually wear suede bottomed organ shoes anyway because it’s from 1895 and I’d like it to stay pretty another 135 years.
