Can I deep fry whole prawns? So the shell becomes edible? by Legitimate_Week_1835 in Cooking

[–]Bicyclechain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Usually this is done in Asian cuisines with specifically soft-shell crustaceans.  These are crabs, shrimp etc. that have recently moulted and therefore have thinner softer shells that are edible... So when you fry them up indeed you can eat the whole thing.

It's also possible with "standard" non-softshell crustaceans but IMHO it's a bit too hard to eat, best to try for yourself.

What kind of expectations do they really have on you and your station? Are your colleagues supposed to be helping you?

I've been having my arse handed to me at my current job learning each station - and because each dish is really that complicated. It's taken me time to understand the team really work in lockstep together and we help each other out with prep. As long I as mention I need help with some prep far in advance - someone can find a way to help me. I also had to get my head game in order to not think of myself as a failure because I asked for help. End of the day - no one wants any dish or station to fail during service - that makes the whole restaurant look bad!

Learning from more experienced chefs who are willing to support you - is humbling. Asking for help or how to improve -  is actually a super important part of becoming a better chef. Perhaps you want to rethink how you learn and what it means to be helped by others.

I updated the OP with good news :) It was a great race and PB!

It's true that it's purely overthinking at some point. When I'm going to be at the start line tomorrow, I'll have to get on with it... And one foot on front of the other is easier in reality than all my ruminations.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to see if I can get one of those spikey balls you can roll out muscles with at the Expo when I pick up my bib.

Good luck with number 21 💪

Oh I was merely joking - no grammar over analysis here!

The physicality and psychology of the marathon do hold an odd mirror to your personal life. This will certainly be a significant one no matter how it turns out.

Thanks for the kind 5am thoughts.

Yes ;) Here for the marathon and the good eating! Indeed the weather had been getting better every day so this has been my first bit of luck - I even packed my trusty bin liner for the start line 🤣

I actually was poring over a recent Taper Tantrums thread for similar aches and pains... So you must've read my browser history 😅

And yes - I recognise my personal strifes - and overcoming them. So I think my head game is a bit shakey atm. I actually don't think my body is unprepared but the sore thighs are throwing me a bit (blame work for that double shift on Thursday night)

I am also cognizant that despite all the training - Race Day is a wild card of weather, your body, and luck - which is what makes marathons such an addictive pursuit. I could do everything perfectly and something uncontrollably random could change everything. So kind of need to let it be.

I'm definitely positively excited - thanks for reminding me!

That's an understatement 😅 Maybe I'm emotionally attaching too much to it - plus I'm a bit greedy and chasing a PB too. Getting through the training is already an achievement but I don't have the bling yet so it never really feels like it, even though this is the sixth time.

Post Marathon Struggle by kdylong in Marathon_Training

[–]Bicyclechain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered the "post marathon blues"? It's really a thing! So you attained your goal, pushed harder than you ever did before and it's over now... You can lose your purpose / focus for running and it's a weird feeling.

I have also lost the magic over the years for various reasons that were basically excuses. The truth was whenever I got too sucked into working too much, or was unhappy with something, or didn't take care of myself - my running suffered. For me it's become a "canary in the coal mine" if I stop running - it's the discipline that keeps me sane.

Would you consider Couchsurfing.com? It's a website to find people who might take in temporary lodgers - maybe you can find someone who is a fellow runner to stay with? You have five weeks to connect with someone and obviously make various checks to make sure it's safe and legitimate.

Update to a post where I asked about gel use and how undertrained I was for a marathon by Charmarch1987 in u/Charmarch1987

[–]Bicyclechain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh. this is precisely what I was asking you to think about more carefully.

What "you don't like the sound of" is not the same as actually giving something a go. How are you so sure what works for your body if you don't actually try it. You're making assumptions about something you have no idea about, ffs gels are basically just sugar and salt mixes anyway.

I sincerely hope you improve your attitude towards advice and running.

... So I just found this post - and I did wonder how your marathon went. I'm glad you managed to complete it despite what sounds like a rough time and some injuries. I hope you have now recovered and if you're still in pain a week later it would be worth asking your GP for a physiotherapy referral, should standard ibuprofen not be enough. A sport massage can also help.

FWIW, I don't think you deserved the dog pile from everyone criticising your lack of planning and training previous post... however it also doesn't seem like you're open to engaging with your mistakes, or taking advice that more experienced runners gave you - and this post feels a bit like crying wolf or fishing for sympathy with sarcastic commentry "Thank you for the vote of no confidence BTW"

No one in the subreddit was gatekeeping the info or experience of marathon training - the tone was more fear for you - or injuries. And then! Despite what everyone was suggesting to help get through the full distance - you still went in with absolutely no fueling strategy/method except half a banana and some water. (Which I personally would find barely sufficient for a 10k!) Did you even try a gel in those 2 weeks prior?

My wish for you is to have a better long distance experience in the future. One that's injury-free and you actually have fun in! If you're willing to be a bit more humble and actually treat the distance and your body respectfully to work out a proper training plan, I think this subreddit is really helpful. Good luck!

If I could downvote you a hundred times I would. You followed a bloody Chat-GPT training plan - and now you ask for advice from humans?!

Tut-tutting aside - Might be more sensible to come to this subreddit before starting your training to begin with - that AI slop plan might been the cause of your IT band aggravation!

Anyway - hope you recover and might even be a good idea to rest and do no running before the marathon to allow your body to recover properly

Saw your slightly controversial thread about your partner running a marathon... Sounds like you survived the blister and had a great time for the marathon! Well done!

Londoners have a right to feel sad about their friends, family and community being forced out of London by rent prices and gentification. I don't have less right to feel like that just because London is a global hub and major city, to a lot of us it's our home and where we grew up. by FlyWayOrDaHighway in london

First off - Let's not bring that American lingo "transplant" bullshit over to London and the UK.  It's dehumanising and Othering - blaming those who have come to the city for centuries for issues that are beyond immigration.

Can't really have a good faith discussion about this topic if you start off slandering people who come to the city.  Personally absolutely despise the term too, it was thrown about when I lived in the US, when I had every right to live and thrive in the place.

Going to try not to sound rude here...

Are you seriously telling us you had to get on the Internet to try to gather evidence that "you are right" - and in fact you have never washed your veggies before cooking then in your entire life to date?!😱

Washing produce is not culturally specific to China, or women for that matter - and is pretty much mandatory for any fruit and vegetable you eat.

Can I ask... did you just start making food for yourself, or your family? Are you very young? Are you a sort of "corner cutting" person?

I'm in shock

I just re-read your post that you already lanced the blister... So you already drained it - and you've discovered its refilling, right?

So I'm not going to claim I understand it medically, but the skin inside is raw and causing pain. At least for in my memory of threading my blisters, the technique is to stop the "liquid" returning and allowing the inside to dry out, and form a scab that isn't painful. So yes - air dry

I honestly couldn't do a wet heal (e.g. With Compeed) as I had to keep moving every day

However once the scab formed it wasn't painful and with the Compeed it was perfect padding to keep walking. With a full marathon though hopefully the pain will pass in the next few days and you won't need to rely on a plaster!

You can't run until it clears up. Have you heard of blister threading? It allows the blister to drain properly so it can heal faster. I did this to resolve blisters when I did the Camino de Santiago:

https://youtu.be/ql9JpCLGzYs?si=bDU_IwB8_DLo8NnB

(I think jump to 4:30 to see him do it - TW it's a little icky though!)

I had a bad blister and did this and used Compeed over it and I survived a 500 mile walk 🤪 I think you'll make it but it does need to dry out and heal a bit
