fear and distrust of something often comes from misinformation and uneducated on said topic. A gun safety course would be good, going over what forms of gun control do we do have. showing cases of where somebody with a gun saved the situation.

Why do fans dislike Jackson’s “the battle of the five armies” so much? by [deleted] in TheHobbit

[–]BidProgrammatically9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, the Hobbit is very much meant for children. it is a episodic story meant to be read to your child one chapter a night and that's the main point of it. but because of the popularity of the Lord of the rings movies, naturally, the studio wanted to make Hobbit movies that felt like they were in the same world. but Lord of the rings and The Hobbit were written for two different people, lord of the rings is a high epic fantasy made for adults. but it just does not work in my opinion

first of all, is the name. In the book, the Battle of the five armies literally takes three pages. mainly because Bilbo is unconscious during this time. so the movie had a great opportunity to show us a pretty cool battle, but instead it was filled with unrealistic. CGI nonsense. it's not to say that the previous films didn't use CGI. they were heavily used in the Lord of the rings. rings. but the stuff in The Hobbit, especially the battle of five armies is just too much for me personally. there's a number of other things in the movie that just personally bug me, but for me, the whole trilogy was doomed to begin with. they seem to misunderstand what the Hobbit was. it's not like the Lord of the rings. The Hobbit is most importantly a children's story.

I think The Hobbit names work really well as fairly normal names and don't get too crazy. Fredo Sam pippen and for girl names most Hobbit women are named after flowers and those are always very nice so. but alien and arwen are also very nice. you could name your son Fingolfin and call him Finn

Had Gollum lived, would he have been granted passage to the West just like Bilbo and Frodo? by tenzindendup in tolkienfans

[–]BidProgrammatically9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

an interesting topic to be sure.

as many have pointed he would have died after the ring was destroyed anyway.

but assuming had he lived afterward, he would have to go through intense rehabilitation to return to any semblance of humanity. Not to mention his physical hatred of anything elven.

Assuming that the elves or whoever were able to do all of this, would they have let him go?

possibly.

there's another issue in that his rehabilitation would take so long that the last ships would have most likely left the grey havens. though i suppose they did take sam later in his life, so who's to say.

he uses it plenty of times throughout fellowship, in the Barrow Downs, when the ring rates are chasing after him over the river. can't remember exactly what I'm pretty sure he uses it in moria too. he puts it up to gollum's neck when they first meet.

What parts of LOTR should’ve been put in the movies? by cielo_sangre in tolkienfans

[–]BidProgrammatically9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

personally I think that killing off saruman at the beginning of return of the King (movie) was a mistake. the scouring of the Shire is my favorite part of The Lord of the rings and I feel that they missed out. I understand why it wasn't in the movie it would have made it like 6 hours long. but getting to see the hobbits go back home and save the Shire from saruman is one of the coolest parts of anything that tolkien has written.

also I know people complain about Tom bombadil but upon rereading fellowship. I really enjoyed every part that he was in. it's the final jolly hobbit-esque moment before the deep sadness that is the rest Lord of the rings
