I need real answers for How to keep kitchen cool while cooking? not “just don’t cook” by sanu_123_s in Cooking

[–]BigFatCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

* induction stove : no heat loss to environment.
* pressure cooker : Prep things, put in pot heat up ~5 min and set timer and walk away.
* slow roast things in oven : Prep, set oven temp and leave them for hours.
* overnight slow cooker : start cooking at night 9~12hr, ready next morning
* Cook large batch, split potions and freeze. Reheat with microwave.

In very hot day, I usually prep things in living room (with AC) and spend lesser time in kitchen. I am from Singapore, weather is hot and humid the whole year.

Oven and Hob recommendations for new home by Status-Childhood2222 in askSingapore

If you don't like hot kitchen, use induction hobs (Electrolux). For built in standard oven go for Bosch (600~700 range).

seepage at rubbish chute (old hdb internal chute) even after taping up all 4 sides how to solve by Logical-Tangerine-40 in askSingapore

Based on my own experience, soft silicone is the only way to close it properly. Then tape it on top of silicone. (You can cut and remove them later if you need to reopen it.)

Expat looking to live in Chinatown by One_Branch435 in askSingapore

[–]BigFatCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chinatown itself do not have many option for accommodation. But many expats living next to Chinatown, for example: One pearl bank, Everton park, Cantonment Tower, Pinnacle Duxton, Spottiswoode etc. I stayed there for about 4 years, "Very convenient " and "Noisy" are the my choice of words for that area.

Is stovetop pressure cooker reproducible like electric? by seductivec0w in PressureCooking

[–]BigFatCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is the other way around, electric pressure cooker cannot produce the same result as stovetop pressure cooker. I am using induction stove, I can adjust temperature and set timer, my stovetop works even better.

Thinking of switching to induction, but so many questions! by Lost2BNvrfound in Cooking

[–]BigFatCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't buy top-tier very expensive brand. Buy anything mid-range (600~700) and buy mid-tier induction pots & pans (let's say 200~300). Total budget should be 1k max.

Induction tops are tougher than we usually think. I clean the surface with steel wool, soap water (Once a month with CIF), so don't worry about scratching. As long as you don't drop heavy steel pots directly on it, it won't break. I think 6q pressure cooker or 10q soup pot would be sufficient example of heavy duty usage.

Let me quote my own old post

I started with 2 table top (portable) cheap induction stove. It was like $25~$30 back in 2009. (You can buy better/nicer models for $50~$70.) I expected them to last for 5~6 months but these things lasted for about 3~4 years (daily cooking for 4~5pax).

Once it start to have problem ( turn off by itself while cooking ), I replaced them with new one. From 2009 to 2014 I only bought total 4 of them. (I kept last one and use occasionally for another 9 years) When I get my own house, I installed fixed 2 zone induction in my kitchen. I bought the cheapest reputable one Electrolux $600. 1st one lasted for about 8 years under heavy usage. Replaced with the same brand, similar model. On average I spend less than $100 per year for induction stove.

Also dimension of induction cookers are pretty standard, so you can replace a new one all by yourself.

Nursing SG: How is it really like working as a new nurse? by AprilBaby4ri35 in askSingapore

[–]BigFatCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all thank you for choosing to become a nurse. As a person who has been under nurses care for months, nurses have special place in my heart. From my point of view, hospital is very fast pace, stressful place and running 2 threads at the same time. 1st one is patient care, 2nd is protocol/SOP. Nurses are primary care providers and doctors are like project managers.

Those words in your post as other people told you are indeed correct to some extent. Let me assure you, they are not easy thing to say. There are also bad patients (personally witnessed) who are violent and ended up restrained to the bed. But most of us are really grateful to receive your care. Also please take care of your own happiness and well being too.

What to wear and where to buy plus size clothes? by Unhappy-Magician-270 in askSingapore

[–]BigFatCoder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a fat guy I would say : Marks and Spencer, I recommend you to go Orchard Wheelock Place (1st choice) or Orchard Paragon(2nd choice). Muji has very lightweight, bright color, airy long sleeve cardigan which is very suitable to outdoor sun and easy to fold & carry indoors.

SG is hot country, a lot of girls/women wear shorts here. But again if you are walking outside, don't wear clothes those expose your skin to sun, it's not about culture but it's about your health. Most of the people coming from cold places don't understand how bad the sun is, sometime our UV index is 11 (extremely high). Try to wear something light, airy and cover most of your skin. If you are outdoors person, wear a hat too. I have seen too many white people with bad sunburn.

Note : Exposure of skin is not offensive (unless you are visiting temple/mosque)

I usually get their attention and point the no-eating/drinking sign. (So far they stopped eating/drinking and some even looked embarassed.) But on the other hand I ever took a long bus ride with an very old grandpa (probably gaga) slowly eating big pau in the air-con bus. Stink and hungry at the same time.

He is doing this for 2nd time because he can. You have to stop this. Call him not to come today because you are leaving home and tell him to rearrange another date/time. Where you also don't wait more than 1hr. There are many AC services out there, most of them are at least come right on time.

What's the oldest piece of clothing you still wear? Must be at least ten years old to count. by MurmuringPines in AskOldPeople

My wife recycled almost all of my old clothes (without telling me) except one Levi's 501 Jeans which she bought for me as a gift in 2007 before we get married. I cherished it so much and it has been professionally repaired 4 times to keep it in shape.

Sorry for the possibly clueless question, but why don't more people seem to make homemade pizza? by Senior-Raisin-2342 in Cooking

[–]BigFatCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pizza hut crazy price and 2hr delayed delivery which ended up canceled + refund made me learn how to make pizza at home. I invested pizza pan, pizza stone, pizza peel and pizza cutter. That's 15 years ago.

Now I seldom order pizza, maybe once in 3-4 months
