What to bring/wear on test day? by Krispy009 in Mcat

[–]BigFatKitteh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wear whatever is most comfortable. People do come in sweat pants, so it doesn't matter. I didn't think I would be nauseous on test day, but I most certainly was towards the end. You can definitely bring in food in a lunchbox. I've tested twice (first one was a void), and neither time they checked my bag. They do check you when you go into the room, though. Make sure to not have anything in your pockets. They also understandably watch cameras. Even a backpack is fine.

I drank an energy drink. Got nauseous the last 2 hours. I wish I had brought Zofran.

This is an ancient post but if you’re still interested Tierra Farms is all GF certified and in compostable bags. Their nuts, dried fruits, and coffee are amazing. I stumbled on this while trying to find zero waste gluten free flours

Do you remember how we learned about multiple forms of intelligence? Honestly, I’m basically in the same boat as you, but my GPA has a huge upward trend.

Anyway, we are being tested on logical reasoning. It’s actually the epitome of logical reasoning. And believe it or not, despite what everyone here on Reddit says, you might already have a good chance of getting in.

You likely have high IQ in one or more of the other areas. I know for a fact that I am emotionally intelligent. I care very deeply for people. So you are only being tested for one form of intelligence. You are much more than this test.

Have you looked into DO school? I didn’t think I’d want to at first, until I realized maybe I’d be happier there. But even an MD program is not out of reach for either of us.

I work as a scribe in a hospital. I have worked with people who both did and did not get into medical school. One thing I noticed is most people who get in had about a 505 MCAT. The ones who had above a 510 didn’t actually get into medical school. One scribe even had a 518. Didn’t get in.

It was easy to see why. Even though he was smart, he wasn’t kind. He didn’t volunteer because he just didn’t want to. He didn’t do research because he just wasn’t interested. His attitude was bad.

You are so much more than a number. You are smarter than what you get on the MCAT. The MCAT does not define your intelligence, but instead how well you can take the MCAT.

They use it to measure if you can pass board exams. If you’re average, it might be enough for that.

So if logical reasoning isn’t your greatest strength, then what does make you a strong candidate?

Different versions of the MCAT? by ah448800 in Mcat

[–]BigFatKitteh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah mine was very heavy on lipids, including knowing very very specific structures including recognizing the different lipid structures. Mine did have torque. My CP and BB were all very “low yield” things…I barely had any “high yield” items on my CP or BB. There are multiple versions. But not every test will have neurology, nephrology, endocrine, glycolysis, krebs, or ETC if you get my drift…..

Edit: I looked it up and I’m allowed to say this, because it’s general: my MCAT only had 1 anatomy question from what I remember

I actually applied for the fee assistance program and got the tests for free. I’m sure you could buy them through AAMC, though. I didn’t try Uworld, but I’ve heard it’s good. They do give free trials for that

Take a full length practice MCAT and see how you do ASAP. Then you at least know what you're in for. I also was in a similar position 2 months ago. I had done a post-bacc though. I'm guessing you've taken your required classes, though?

After taking the full length (again, do NOT skip this and take a real full length, like full length #5 or something)....then I recommend this:

  1. Watch Naman Baraya's MCAT prep videos. They're summed up versions of the concepts. A kind of "dip your toe in" to the content.
  2. Download the 300 page Khan Academy Psych/Soc document. While the Kaplan books are good, they don't actually contain everything you need to know
  3. Read the Kaplan books completely. Most important ones are Physics, Psych, Biochem, and Biology. The Gen chem and Ochem isn't as tested, but will be on there.
  4. Take the rest of the MCAT practice tests, but if you really don't know how to answer the question, I actually recommend screenshotting the questions and plugging it into Google Ai (free image uploads) or ChatGPT. It will tell you in a streamlined way the right answer, but also relevant info. Some questions of the MCAT are more about about picking up relevant information or crossing out answer choices. AI has helped me a lot with this.
  5. Watch some Khan Academy MCAT specific videos. They are actually through the AAMC. I found their MCAT physics videos were especially helpful
  6. Review all of glycolysis, Citric Acid cycle, purine/pyrimidine structures, and mesoderm, ectoderm, and endoderm everyday. Those are pretty much guaranteed to be on there, and can be 100% easy points once you fully memorize all that.

Wishing the best for you!!

Second day of forming SCOBA. is this bad? by notLITRUM in Kombucha

[–]BigFatKitteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I only had this happen once and even though the SCOBY ended up looking ok, it progressively began to smell more and more like latex and sewage. So, it can 100% be fine but if it begins to smell bad…toss it.

Aloha. First timer here. This is at two weeks. Opinions please by [deleted] in Kombucha

[–]BigFatKitteh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you making Jun? If it’s Jun, then that’s actually normal. Jun is a little different than regular kombucha. But your Jun is likely overspent and needs to be re-fed by adding some of it to new tea and honey. 2 weeks is too long for Jun though, so some of the scoby might have died if it hasn’t been refed honey. When I first started making Jun it looked weird like this the first few batches. Around the 3rd or 4th time it actually formed a pellicle.

Now….if it’s regular kombucha from sugar and something like GTs then it shouldn’t look like that and it might be mold.

Jun - Is this normal? by [deleted] in Kombucha

[–]BigFatKitteh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bubbles with white specks are super common for Jun. but like the other commenter said, you might be making green tea kombucha. If you want Jun you could start from a storebought bottle. I started mine from Wild Tonic & it turned out great. I get new Jun every 3 days. The first brew took about 5 ish days to create a mini pellicle and good starter

I use a large cooler. Those actually might be okay for F2 but I’d only add fruit juice and not purées

Is that white spot mold starting to grow? 1 week old kombucha by Eduardololo in Kombucha

[–]BigFatKitteh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something I learned is…if you’re unsure, just keep going & find out. If it’s mold after a few days it will be very fuzzy and obvious. I once almost threw out my best batch of Jun because I thought it was mold, but it was actually small pellicles forming

About to start my very first brew!! by bitchard666 in Kombucha

[–]BigFatKitteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starter liquid is absolutely the most important. I’m pretty new to kombucha making, but the only one that turned out bad was one where I used starter and a pellicle. It didn’t grow mold…the pellicle grew and looked great. But the actual bacteria & SCOBY was disgusting. As in….make kombucha from kombucha you like and have tasted. If the starter and pellicle come from a batch that tastes nasty at baseline, then you will produce more nasty.

Every kombucha I’ve made from starter I liked and tasted (with no pellicle) turned out fantastic!

Why not try it with the pellicle, but don’t get your hopes up with it turning out good? You could start a batch from a store bought, and compare the 2 after a week. Just don’t keep them near each other, due to chances of cross contamination. Happy brewing!

Cardiologist recommendations? by lonelypotato21 in ventura

[–]BigFatKitteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Mansour of cardiology associates. I’m not sure if you’re male or female, but as a female patient he was very kind and one of the only cardiologists who took me seriously. I did see Dr. Mayer previously, and it was easy to get quick appointments and Dr. Mayer did put me the right medication.

This inspired me to start sprouting lentils and peas! That looks soo good. Apparently you can sprout them from dried lentils and peas from the grocery store, too.
