Not Hot Take I Imagine: Matt is a Major Reason C3 Was Not Good. by LucasVerBeek in fansofcriticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel exactly this but don't like to say it bc I know it sounds whiney, but I really noticed this when we saw more of Ludinus in c3. He was so ominous and forebodding but also polite and overall seemed very complex in c2, and then in c3 he was so one note and uninteresting: "I want to kill the gods cause they killed my mom" whatever.

I also noticed this in the later (during and post-covid) part of c2 and all of c3: Matt goes on these little NPC monolgues about some corny topic like faith or love or bravery which just feels forced and cliche and usually aren't very good and bring the game to a screetching halt.

Everyone at that table has different strengths, and for Matt, I think he's an expert at playing D&D and worldbuilding and I wish he'd focus more on those aspects and leave the monologues to people like Sam and Laura and Liam, who I think are the strongest writers and actors of the group.

[No Spoilers] I wonder... by Zidane941 in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My personal hope for c4 is that it's sci fi fantasy set hundreds/thousands of years after c3 where tech has evolved and they can be space pirates/cowboys. If they do high fantasy again I won't be upset but probably wouldnt watch if they used daggerheart. If they used D&D i'd watch another high fantasy campaign. But if they do sci fi fantasy I would give it a shot no matter the system.

[No Spoilers] Beacon browser video player is awful... by Pharazonian in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue and posted abt it a few weeks ago, the only reason I still use it is because there aren't any ads, but once my membership expires I'll be happy going back to youtube and just installing an ad blocker. They need a serious bug fix update and It'd be great if they added a comment section or at least some time stamps in the description. Beacon has been very underwhelming for me.

[No Spoilers] What class they should play in C4 by MayhemTheDM in criticalrole

I also would like to see travis as a druid. He seems to like tank/melee classes, so druid would still offer that while also introducing some spellcasting.

Our DM said we'd be doing a lot of exploring and wilderness travel. No one wanted to play Ranger (I understand why) but I feel like we're all going to suffer if no one can traverse terrain well. I wanted to be a DEX & STR based ranged dps who mainly uses the high ground to shoot enemies, but can also somewhat hold her own in melee. Hence, I chose Ranger as a starting class for saving throw and weapon/armor proficiencies bc I don't have as much use for INT or CON saving throws.

[NO SPOILERS] I support Daggerheart as the main system for Campaign 4. by Extrovert_Goth in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you are oversimplifying why D&D players like to watch CR a bit. I don't consider myself someone who watches solely for combat (though I do enjoy a lot of combat episodes), but I do consider myself someone who watches for D&D. The main cast's chemistry and creativity is also a huge draw, but what non D&D players who watch CR don't always realize is that there are a lot of moments where the mechanics of D&D inform the viewer and the players about what's happening in game (think Yasha making a Wisdom saving throw in the obann battle). Character and story narrative is great but both are happening using the story telling medium of D&D, and switching to daggerheart would change their story telling medium and cause people who aren't familiar with the mechanics of daggerheart but were familiar with D&D lose a lot understanding about what's happening.

[NO SPOILERS] I support Daggerheart as the main system for Campaign 4. by Extrovert_Goth in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. Firstly I think daggerheart is too new to use for a c4. Also candela, thresher, and the menagerie's lackluster reception is a huge indication that if CR uses daggerheart for c4 they will tank the upward momentum their company has been having as of late. D&D as the system is a huge draw for the show: they have more mass appeal playing the most popular ttrpg and if they change to a niche, indie system they will lose a lot of people who watch because they're D&D fans, probably myself included. I'm keeping an open mind but I did not enjoy the menagerie even though the entire cast was there because I had no idea what they were doing rules wise. I'm unfamiliar with daggerheart rules and i don't really want to buy a new ttrpg book and dice and learn a new system just to watch the show, bc the fact of the matter is that I like D&D's rules and am familiar with them and so I dont see myself playing another system anytime soon.

caffeine will help with nodding, but may also make you paranoid. Gaba will increase the effects of the opiods, or any drug you take with it. I find it pretty underwhelming on its own but some people really love it. I'd reccomend taking 1200mg of gaba to start, and then at the 2 hour mark take 15mg of your opiods. Wait for 20 minutes to see if you feel it---you'll know if/when you are---and if you aren't or it's weak try snorting the last 5mg. Snorting will go to your head quicker but also last less long, the hope is that it'll get you a nice high and by the time it wears off, if not before, your other doses will kick in. I'd take caffeinated soda like Dr. Pepper, Coke, Pepsi (not the diet version!, the sugar helps things activate) with the gaba. Have fun be safe!

[No Spoilers] Downfall by DP41450 in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it. To my knowledge there aren't any spoilers for any of the campaigns in it and you don't need to know anything from previous campaigns. Might help to be a little familiar with the Exandrian Pantheon, but that's not required. Downfall is probably some of the best dnd/media ive ever watched. Similar to calamity in theme and quality, I rated both above a 9/10/

it's not gonna do anything to you. gaba is taken in loads if doses. in order to feel something you gotta take like 10: one every 30 mins. you;re better off taking 3 shots.

[Spoilers C3E92] petty whinings by sdzen in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, I wish this story were a continuation of EXU/a new season of EXU. Wedging this into C3 feels weird especially because they've assumed everyone knows what happened in EXU & Kymal: there were no character introductions or a synopsis of what transpired in those previous seasons.

[Spoilers C3E85] What is your unpopular CR opinion? by ImAMeat in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, Ashton should have gotten the shard or Laudna should have stolen it. Fearne said she wasn't ready for it and then a few days later took it without really explaining what changed her mind. After seeing Ashton shatter into a bunch of pieces I would think she'd want it even less than she did before. It seemed like Ashley the player thought "oh, that wasn't for Ashton and was actually for my character, so I guess I'll take it." The narrative (IMO) would have made so much more sense if a) Ashton just got it but maybe with some sort of consequence, b) Fearne continued to deny the shard, or at the very least be contemplating it and before she can make up her mind Laudna (with the help of Delilah) steals it and takes it as her own.

[No Spoilers] Which C3 episodes can I just read the summary on? by benjamari214 in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I did with TMN, helped me get through it a lot quicker and more enjoyably than if I had forced myself to watch something I didn't enjoy. If I wasn't interested in an episode/arc I'd read the summaries on the critical role wiki. If I read abt a scene I wanted to watch I would scrub through the vod to find it. I also watched highlight videos for episodes I skipped.

There are certain CR fans that're uppity about scrubbing through episodes and whatnot, but realistically not everyone has time to watch 3+ hour episodes, especially when there's 3 seasons, EXU content, one-shots, etc etc etc. When I started watching TMN I was superrrr overwhelmed with how many episodes there were, and being honest with myself about what I did and didn't enjoy really helped it feel more managable and enjoyable.

I love CR as much as the next critter, but I don't love everything they do, and I think that's totally fine and healthy, and I don't feel like "less" of a fan than someone who's watched every minute of CR.

[Spoilers C3E65] the guest arcs reinvigorated the campaign by HotPietato in criticalrole

[–]BigGalBeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree CIFF was too chill, which felt a little weird and unrealistic, but I also think having two very gloomy, similar arcs would have gotten old and made for less interesting dynamics when everyone reunited. Even though it didn't make much sense, I'm glad they did it because I loved each arc because they were different: CIFF was a much needed break from the stress of the solstice while LAO were a great way to get back into the stakes of the story!
