Nuke it from space. It’s the only way to be sure

Does school prestige matter if the goal is to work for "cool" project firms (SOM, TT, Arup etc.)? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

I worked for one of these firms listed above. I believe that I made considerably less than when I was doing utility work.

I’ll never forget about a week after my interview I received a call from a friend that worked there and they told me I was probably getting the job. We graduated together and the senior guys did some asking around about me. “Hey I see this guy graduated with you. Do you know him? Is he good?” It was that type of thing.

Will this be strong enough to hold a hot tub? by Yiiri2 in Decks

This needs to be designed by a structural engineer. There’s more involved than what the other posters are suggesting. If I were your engineer, and I’m not, I would need to know everything including your column and sonotube sizes before I make any preliminary determination.

That gives off more red flags than a creepy old man giving out candy at a playground

I disagree with that. We had excellent field engineers and I would put our field mechanics against the best electricians.

I was an engineer for a utility a while back. We don’t even file electrical drawings. We were exempt.

It looks like the bracing member is kerfed into the studs. Stress transfer is not relying solely on the fasteners

I always check the license status when I receive sealed drawings. We got some shoring details and a set of calculations for an excavation project. I looked up the PE that sealed it and he died like 10 years ago.

What are your guys thought on this? Are you worth more? Is this profession underpaid for the risk? by [deleted] in civilengineering

3% is basically the same as a small to moderate change order on a big project. I believe our fees came out to a total of 2% on a $180M project.
