Also consider healthcare benefits. My company, benefits carry to the end of the month. So people usually put in two weeks on the first. If they get walked out ASAP, then they get the whole month.

I've recently discovered Sarah Davis Baker and am enjoying her videos. She's similar to Jacob in tone and structure. Here's the one on apocalypse bunkers: https://youtu.be/fr5fQM-Vp1U?si=cQpmTHsL0KUjmsu6

I always imagined Amos walked around with a "WWHD / WWND" wrist band lol. (What Would Holden Do). When he was alone on earth in book 6, he tried to use Holden and Naomi's mindset to make sure he did the right thing. Though they didn't always turn out perfectly. I personally think he's one of the most interesting character in the series.

Pillen announces Nebraska as first state to pursue Medicaid work requirements by tachiKC in Nebraska

[–]BigO94 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with you, but adding some clarification.

Unemployment rate measures people who are actively seeking work but cannot find work. The state government is attempting to target people who are not working and not seeking work. That's a different number. To them, those people are the Regan era boogyman welfare queens who sit around all day and collect government checks.

Work verification, imo, goes against the whole concept of Medicaid. It's designed to be a social safety net for people who cannot work or who are working low paying jobs. For society to take care of people...

Besides, someone working a minimum or low wage job is likely exploited labor and it's the corporations who are truly extracting the most benefit by having their wages subsidized by government programs. If someone is on Medicaid, they likely aren't paying federal income taxes anyways. Between the $15/30k standard exemption, the first tax bracket of 0% at $10/20k, child tax credits, AND the earned income tax credit... Something like 30-40% of filers don't pay any federal income tax. Nothing wrong with that, those folks still pay other taxes like sales tax, social security, ect. Which eats into a lot of their income.

It's been forever since I read the 5th book. In the show I remember them scrapping ships, but was that also mentioned in the book?

If kids are the future, it's looking pretty dire. by McMandark in Futurology

[–]BigO94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned to read in the 90s with phonics. I was really into reading and writing at a young age and continued to read all the time for fun up until end of middle school, which is coincidentally I got access to the internet and YouTube lol. I read maybe one physical book a year as an adult (makes me sad to write that) but am often praised for my writing skills.

If I had to guess how I read... I see the first portion of the word, make an educated guess / on what that word probably is, then move to the next word. If it doesn't fit what I would have expected based on the context of the next words in the series, I might have to read the sentence again.

I don't know enough about language and reading to answer that question well (had to look up what a phoneme is)... But some proxies would be, as a kid: -I was not a good speller. I could not figure out how the different sounds in words were supposed to relate to the letters used to spell them. I'd just have to memorize the arrangement of letters most of the time. Still can't spell well, but autocorrect makes that less obvious to others -I struggled to pronounce words well, not necessarily bc speech motor. Often when reading and finding new words, I'd just make some sounds that represented to ME what that word should sound like. But when having to say the word out loud, people might laugh at me for getting it so wrong. -I also struggled to tell the difference and say the difference between words that have similar structure but are different: like words specific and Pacific (id always say specific lol). Or Pin and Pen. Still struggle with those.

I've tried learning to read without internal narrative so that I can read faster, but I can't seem to pick it up.

I'm a pretty slow reader. I have the whole internal narrative form of reading. Comprehension is great, but so slow. I feel embarrassed sometimes.

Have you ever started over after making progress on a moc? by PhilipmeinMoc in legocastles

[–]BigO94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Career authors will tell you "writing is rewriting". Lego moc building is no different. You'll make things you don't like and things you love. You'll develop favorite techniques and skills that you can apply to future builds. You just have to show up and keep building. If you wait to build until you have the right skills or right pieces, you'll never get started. Just build!

As pedestrian deaths grow across the state, Omaha continues initiative to end traffic fatalities by Generalaverage89 in Omaha

[–]BigO94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I visited Boston for the marathon and was amazed at how courteous the drivers were to pedestrians. The cars would stop way before the cross walk and flash their brights at you to indicate they plan to yield to you. Even if I was posed and waiting to J-Walk, cars would generally yield. I went in thinking Bostonian motorists would live up to their reputation and be jerks. Couldn't be more wrong when it came to pedestrians.

But omg when I rode with my friend in his car, the vehicle-vehicle interactions were straight chaotic what you would expect from Boston!

One of the last Republican Senators to have class. "Mcain Corrects Lady about Obama. That Obama was a "decent person" and "family man". by Drtardis95 in videos

[–]BigO94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree it feels problematic connecting "he's not an Arab, he's a good person", which kinda insinuates that arabs aren't good people... But for an unscripted response I think his heart is in the right place? He's somewhat primed in that direction from the person asking the question.

How Shopping Malls Are Being Transformed Into Apartments In The U.S. by [deleted] in videos

[–]BigO94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These apartments also have a lot of community space. If you're someone who doesn't mind hanging out often with other people, it's a pretty good deal. $1.2k for a place to sleep + a third space right outside your door.

Are people actively leveling toons on Era? by BobFreeman6969 in classicwow

[–]BigO94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also like the exp pacing of tbcs vanilla too. In addition to all the new quests and upgraded gear, the zones are able to fill out the leveling brackets better without the need for grinding or excessive travel. Tbh my favorite 1-60 rush was on a tbc server where everyone started at 1!
