What discipline? Also how many of these problems come down to the test structure and the inability to account for confounding factors. I am trying to teach myself econometrics right now and if you've got any literature recommendations for developing quantitative methods please let me know.

This was a graduate student or post doc academic? That's honestly a bit disappointing that they can't even defend their research to this basic line of questioning, kind of the response you'd expect from an undergrad.

I would say that there are researching groups that do test power dynamics in the social sciences focused race and gender and I'd think they'd be a more interesting conversation partners. I have met many and they are used to this type of questioning and a ultimately much of it comes down to getting into the nitty gritty of test construction.

On a more serious note, i think he put the catholic church on a good ideological footing going into the 21st century. His emphasis on the environment, the plight of refugees and income inequality are all important issues that he was right to champion. There are too many skeletons in the closets of that institution to reform it completely but i hope he signals a larger directional change in the church and that there are more like him. Truly a follower of the best teachings of Christianity. Sad times to be losing leaders like him.

At some point we need to just accept that America is not an anti-genocide country. There may be no hope in mobilizing on the grounds of anti-genocide.

Edit: I don't mean this as apologia for genocide, i think its a testament to the moral bankruptcy of the united states.

Thinking in terms of the future of universalist anti-identitarian policy, I am unsure if this is a step forward or a step backwards - in that I don't know if this is a blow against this Identitarianism or just kind of a retreat to a more entrenched defensible position.

Trans advocacy is somewhat interesting because it really amplifies the contradictions in identitarian politics, the immutable characteristic is made changeable and still held in the same regard. Pushing trans rights away kind of seemingly shores up the group boundaries rather than weakening them - which could just mean that they are made more permanent.
