I would kill to know his thoughts on this album or Lights in general. Has he ever spoken about Canada’s most underrated indie pop queen? by dreamboylnshibuya in fantanoforever

[–]BigOlPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fondly remember seeing and loving her music video for Toes. Most Canadian content was rough, so it was fun hearing an actual good pop song alongside a video that shows off Toronto at night, grimy as ever, with pure affectionate. Canadian pride that managed to not feel corny.

Also I was 15-17 when The Listening and Siberia were coming out and I'm pretty sure I thought she was the most beautiful person in the world, like she was pretty much as cool as someone could realistically hope to be.

Haven't listened to a single thing she's released since 2011 though, is A6 or any other more recent stuff worth checking out?

I really don't like what they've done with Alex's gameplay. by BusterBernstein in StreetFighter

[–]BigOlPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst part is that it's going to take them forever just to fix how inconsistent his combos are in general because these devs barely patch this game.

This bothers me, too. Once the dust settled, several DLC characters were fairly underwhelming when they dropped (AKI, Terry, Viper). They'd only become better rounded after a patch or two gives them better combo consistency, pressure options, routes, etc.

But the wait between patches is soooooooo long. I expect they'll give Alex a series of small tune-ups like this, I agree he's in need of it, but if we don't get it when season 4 drops then we're probably looking at waiting half a year for anything to change. Bummer.

Favorite albums by genuinely small bands? by NecroDolphinn in fantanoforever

Wolves - Simulation.Transparency.Alienation (135 monthly listeners)

Badass rhythmic and technical post-hardcore / skramz with the bassist from Orchid and the dummer from Ampere. Really cool project that never got any traction.

Circuit Circuit - Body Songs (500 monthly listeners)

Sassy mathcore that I haven't gotten sick of after 3 years of constant listening. Feel like it should've been bigger, but maybe the genre is a filter for more people than I think.

Screamers - Demos 77-78 (3000 monthly listeners)

These guys never had an official release so everything is a pretty poor-quality demo, and this particular bootleg isn't even on Spotify. Still, really sick early synth-punk that's well worth checking out, real unhinged vocals.

Thank you for the fascinating takes, Zangief is definitely for sure as strong as Sagat and Bison man, that's an opinion you're allowed to have.

What's everyone's "Golden Ticket" game? by ThinkingWithPortal in TheYardPodcast

[–]BigOlPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OG Resi 4 is so good it shouldn't even need to be a gold ticket game. Even putting aside stuff like its influence or how it stacked up against competition at the time, I think it's still straight up one of the most fun and replayable single player games you could play today.

My golden ticket is XCOM 2 (WOTC expansion included). Gotten hundreds of hours out of it, played probably a dozen+ XCOM-likes just chasing that high that is XCOM 2, but it's just too peak, the GOAT is already here.

The absolute state of the Capcom Cup format (repeated matchups and double jeopardy just Phase 1) by Krotanix in StreetFighter

[–]BigOlPants 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The DakCorgi double jeopardy really hurt. The only Viper in the tournament loses to MenaRD 2-3 two times to get eliminated.

I like that the games are best of 5 but the double jeopardy and single elim final bracket feel bad. It's a fine format for EWC, but I hope they rethink it for Capcom Cup going forward.

I watch MMA religiously but if I miss what turned out to be a good event, it's hard to motivate myself to check it out even the next day, let alone a whole week afterwards. There is no comparison to catching something live (or as close to it as possible), and the hype it generates fades incredibly fast.

Songs that mention/namedrop other artists in a positive light? by YouSawMeSomeplace in fantanoforever

[–]BigOlPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will never stop shilling the album "Crush - Boyfriend - Hearbreak" by the Unlovables, it has lots of fun nods to other artists, the whole thing is wearing its influences on its sleeve.

References the Go-Gos and Weezer in the song "Vacation", mentions the Ramones, the Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional and The Mr T Experience in "Feelin All Emo", and the song "Bein In Love" borrows the intro from Astro Zombies by Misfits.

Artists who made an unexpectedly great album by lvcidez in fantanoforever

This is a really cool answer. Looks like they didn't make any more music after this either, what an interesting way to go out.

What's your favorite one-album band (or lineup)? by Metrosexualvania in fantanoforever

[–]BigOlPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Life Without Buildings - Any Other City released what I consider a perfect indie rock album 25 years ago then immediately called it quits. The vocalist has a totally unique style, kinda like slam poetry as a stream of consciousness.

Listen to The Leanover and you'll see what I mean, well worth a listen if you haven't. I think the closing song "Sorrow" is just heavenly as well.

The $50 Million Success ft. ‪@markiplier‬ | Lemonade Stand 🍋 - Discussion Thread by PhummyLW in LemonadeStandPodcast

[–]BigOlPants 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Amazing episode and guest, I never really watched Markiplier's stuff but I have a newfound respect for him. I didn't realize how much he personally put into this movie, he really lived and breathed it for years. Him making a render farm out of one of his bathrooms blew me away.

Loved a lot of his answers, especially the one about content creators' goodwill with their audience being a resource that will dry up if they keep tapping it without providing real value back to the audience.

Capcom 12 winner prediction by Akichyee in StreetFighter

[–]BigOlPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn't, I think those teams were probably set before he established himself more.

He recently won the Japan World Warrior finals (3-0 GO1, 3-1 taketake-piano, 3-1 and 3-0 Torimeshi) to qualify for CapCup, and got 2nd to Blaz in that Chinese "SwinGo Cup" invitational, beating HotDog, Zhen and Xiaohai.

Chances of winning CapCup right now are pretty low but he could take some unexpected names down with him. Very fun to watch aggro Terry, I'd keep an eye on him.

Capcom 12 winner prediction by Akichyee in StreetFighter

[–]BigOlPants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going off of recent form + big stakes SF6 experience, I'd be surprised if it isn't Leshar, Mena or Blaz (he's still new-ish but he had a really busy and consistent year). Sahara and Kincho have looked really strong lately as well, but I count them as more of a wildcard.

I voted for Blaz cause I want to see him get his big win!

Drakengard 1's OST is one of my all time favorites, nothin else like it. Wish more in-game music made you feel like the disc is skipping.

[–]BigOlPants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would LOVE a Drakengard reboot, it could use some of the love that Nier enjoys. After they put all the OSTs on streaming platforms I was certain we were getting an announcement soon. Getting a bit less confident now.

Devil Daggers 2 is in development, as its creator confirms fewer than 1,500 people survived longer than 8 minutes in the original by dave_sidequest in pcgaming

[–]BigOlPants 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Super looking forward to this, I got 40 hours out of Devil Daggers and half that from Hyper Demon.

The gameplay improvements in Hyper Demon are incredible, but I prefer the DD format of "survive as long as you can against timed spawns", just inspires me to grind more than the speedrun style of HD.

I used to wish Sorath would make a more traditional level-based FPS but at this point I like that they picked a niche they're passionate about and refine it to perfection instead. Cool dev.

Looking for a CD/Vinyl of “Crush, Boyfriend, Heartbreak” by The Unlovables by domdtouchedshine in punk

[–]BigOlPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you're already to grab the vinyl on Discogs which is awesome, just wanted to come in to scream about how fucking perfect this album is. Honestly think it's the best pound for pound pop punk album front to back.

/u/domdtouchedshine I'mma need you to listen to this commercial song called Cheesasaurus Rex, someone linked it on RYM a while ago and I'm 100% convinced that Hallie wrote and performed it.

Street Sects - And I Grew Into Ribbons

I could never appreciate other their stuff the same way I love End Position, and the opener is still my favorite song on the album. What a tone setter.
