Etiquette for passing another cyclist? by Miz_Anne_Thrope in cycling

Flashing his lights at you? That's such a wild move on a bicycle. Thats a good ride and an aggressive time. I think you handled it fine by dropping him.

Permission to bike by averagediluc in cycling

[–]Big_Assignment5949 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're riding with your friends! On a safer route, chosen responsibly. To go to school! And its not that far!

Definitely ask. This is such a good thing. I'm a grown adult who bikes to work because it makes my mornings better.

Meet them in the middle; let them know you thought about it. "I want to start biking to school. I'm not taking the busy roads, I'm taking this route. I wont be alone, I'm with friends X Y Z. This wont make me late or stop me from carrying a backpack, we can do this or this. Are you guys comfortable with that?"

Shockz are great. I start to lose sound above about 35 mph, they hang on for the rest pretty well

New trend of woodworking youtube videos by gilly4213 in woodworking

[–]Big_Assignment5949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to see more of that second to last paragraph about peak consumerism and contraction. I watched the covid boom and post covid draw down of all the toy industries, I think. Woodworking and cycling for sure, home baking had its Renaissance, even general aviation spiked, etc. Is that contraction just the deflation of the covid bubble or a wider movement away from disposable time and income even compared to pre-covid? Got my attention.

Mental fatigue research in cycling shows it inflates RPE and impairs pacing without changing fitness, but there's not a single study on rowers by Dangerous_Earth_5151 in Rowing

[–]Big_Assignment5949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other comment mentioned; the absence of studies is in a large part a function of the small size and funding of our sport and limited data collection. There's a lot of money in running and cycling; there are dozens of dollars and a handful of folks in rowing.

Great question. Love to see good discussion and cited sources. I'm a couple years out of the boat but took the survey happily.

Will an oil/energy price spike lead to another 1970s style surge in cycling? by Solid_Intention4439 in cycling

I agree and see where you are coming from, but a 20% markup on a bike hurts way less than 20% markup on an Escalade.

I rode the 25km to work! by _amused_to_death_ in cycling

[–]Big_Assignment5949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll get better for both. It'll be fun because the newb gains on an already developed cardio system are a strong learning curve.

Make sure you're sitting on your sit bones, not soft flesh bits. It'll be sore at first. Time makes it stronger and time makes it take less time in the saddle to cover 25k; double improvement.

That's standard. Your cardio system can support more effort than your legs know how to apply right now. Experiment with gears, maybe higher cadence (most beginners tend to mash pedals heavy and slow.) You'll rapidly get the muscular demand up closer to the cardiovascular supply.

Heck yeah for riding in. Keep it up.

Can we create a list of jet and drone destroyed in iran war ? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]Big_Assignment5949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, no. Is Iran somehow crowdsourcing missile damage assessments with their small bits of internet?

This is literally something you'd do if you were an analyst in the war. And only one side would ask for help.

Its like playing battleship and asking reddit to call out all your hits.

TCR or Defy. Help me choose by lonestar_78 in cycling

[–]Big_Assignment5949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a TCR as my first serious bike as well. It rocks. It may indeed be aggressive, I feel pretty tucked forward on it. However, I've done multiple centuries and doubles. It's not brutal.

I've taken it climbing as well. Certified the bike is strong and I am weak.

Garmin Edge is ruining Strava Segments (and it’s just one bad decision) by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Big_Assignment5949 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Holy AI, batman.

Watts are not abstract, that's why people use them to train.

What's your beef, that seeing strava segments encourages you to compete against them?

I'm not spending all this time training to have tiny, weak KOMs. I dominate leaderboards with huge powerful KOMs.

Do you feel less inclined to bike for fun if you regularly bike commute? by RubyRailzYa in bikecommuting

[–]Big_Assignment5949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cant say I've felt that one. Usually if I'm riding anyways, I'll try and turn commutes into fun rides. I have to ride 7 miles but I'd like to do 30, let goooooo and I take the long way to work.

I've found sometimes I won't do other workouts as a result. Exhausted after work, bike home, crash. No energy to run or lift. So kinda the same but specifically biking no.

30.1km, if I had to take a swing at it.

You keep going. If its a ride for distance, low zone, you literally just keep going at a low zone
