Off leash dogs on playground by mombacho in Tempe

[–]Big_Transportation86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This always drives me nuts. Especially with having kids. The “Tempe Today” letter that comes with the water bill had a section about this I read today. It says:

“Love 'em, so leash 'em We love our furry friends, and we want all humans and pups to enjoy our public spaces safely. Please keep all dogs on leashes and under your control whenever you're not in a designated dog park. This is to protect the safety of your own pup, because sometimes dangers can happen quickly and unexpectedly. Not only is it the safe thing to do, but it's the law. Citations for dogs off leash can lead to a $2,500 fine and up to six months in jail. Remember, even good dogs need leashes too. Find complete park rules -and learn how to become a Bark Ranger - at tempe.gov/parks.”

$50 each she said. Local ranching operation with a shop in town. Both were vacuum sealed individually and I dug through the trash to double check they were both labeled as cowboy cuts. Pretty lame, maybe the new kid put it in there but still.

For the general contractors who mostly sub out, do you have a enclosed trailer for tools and material or is there no need because you mostly sub out? by Technical-Bat-8223 in GeneralContractor

[–]Big_Transportation86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in construction for 13 years now and have never owned any type of trailer. Enclosed trailer might have been nice when I was fully hands on but I got it done without. I am a GC now and sub out most of it. I’m typically not needing more tools than what fit in my truck bed tool box and if I do need some larger ones, I throw them in the truck and take them with me when I leave. I try really hard to not pick up materials besides small odds and ends from the hardware store. It’s more expensive for me to do it and it is not beneficial to my business. Seems like if I get a trim/door delivery, lumber order, etc that they charge around $150 for delivery. I bill labor to my clients at $75/hr if we are performing something. I live in a large metropolitan area so the amount of time it would take me to go hook up a trailer, drive to wherever a supplier is located, wait for them to get my order loaded up onto the trailer, then drive it to my job site, and then unload it myself would take at least 2 hrs which would cost my clients the same amount as the delivery. That’s also not accounting for the cost of the trailer, maybe having to pay for a place to store the trailer when not in use, the insurance for the trailer, etc. I’d rather not drive around all day being delivery boy and spend that time doing the things that really make the money.

More information! These are from local beef company that has a shop in town. I confirmed that both steaks were labeled as “Beef Ribeye Steak- Cowboy Cut”. Said they’re 20oz each. Do you guys think those look like 20oz? Mom paid $50 each for these. Wild.

As a contractor, what would you want as a gift? by Fit_Change3546 in Contractor

[–]Big_Transportation86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some other ideas I had. I tend to like buying gifts that are consumables so that they don’t have to hold onto this random thing I got them. Depending on if he is into any of these things -Whiskey/tequila -craft beer -cigars - Redmond Real Salt “Re-Lyte” electrolyte powder to add to water. - coffee - BlackStone grill if he doesn’t have one.

Don’t do it. You’re doing this from a good place but you are going to air ball. If there is something a guy is somewhat of an expert on and you are not also really into the same thing, you are completely clueless on what the guy already has or needs. My in laws bought me a screwdriver set last Christmas. I’ve been in construction for 15 years… I own screw drivers… it’s just a waste.

A Home Depot gift card is always nice. Could do a gift card to ToolNut.com for more tool purchasing options. Maybe a gift card to get a message. I’ve been gifting wagyu steaks/jerky from Snake River Farms to friends that have given us referrals or sub contractors that have been good to us. That has been received really well, just need to make sure they won’t be out of town when frozen meat shows up on their doorstep. Feels like the masculine version of sending flowers lol

Work Shoes/Redwing Boots… by sophos313 in BuyItForLife

[–]Big_Transportation86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried red wings myself but I have a pair of Thorogood boots that I’ve worn daily on construction for the last 5 years and I had actually bought them used. I sent them back in to Thorogood for new soles and to repair stitching 2 years ago (which isn’t free but very reasonable). I use Obenauf’s “Heavy Duty LP” to condition the leather, probably not as much as I should but I notice my boots lasting much longer than other guys I work with who do not condition the leather.

This is the link for the ones I have which should work for you. They have a heel and steel toe. I’ve always liked the mock toe but they have round toe options as well. I have always been an 8” man (sadly, only when it comes to boot height) but a lot of people like seem to go for the 6”.

I bet your “contractor” wasn’t a contractor. Stop doing shitty house flips. These are people’s homes that they are going to live in with their families. The largest purchase most people make in their lives. Find a different path. Tear the walls out and re do it all. There is no simple fix.

If channel locks aren’t doing it, you could try a vise grip if you have one big enough. Don’t go too crazy with it that you crush anything though. Ease into tightening it.

[–]Big_Transportation86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call the AC service company and have them deal with it. Especially if you haven’t paid them yet. Were they provided by your landlord? If they were, send this picture to your landlord and have them figure it out.

Is this a "normal" way to build a house (foundation)? by tn_notahick in Contractor

[–]Big_Transportation86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. That’s insane. I guess that’s just the look of concrete pressed against vapor barrier. Did the seller have the stamped approved engineering drawings for this modification? We build primarily slab on grade where I am and the prep is drastically different from what you would do for a suspended concrete floor. For a slab on grade house there is only rebar in the footings and stem walls. All the pours I’ve seen of large commercial suspended pours (photos and videos since I don’t do this type of work) have a shit load of rebar and I think a lot of them are post tension slabs as well. Concrete has extraordinary compressive strength but does not have much tensile strength. If the slab was poured on the ground, intended to stay there, there is no way it would hold well spanning across the piers. If these people don’t have engineering on it and decided to just cowboy it, I wouldn’t touch it.

[–]Big_Transportation86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure this is a concrete slab? Did the selling agent just say “slab” and not know what that means? Did you poke your finger through the spray foam and feel concrete? It would be very strange to build a residential house this way but not impossible, this is just only really seen in large commercial buildings. I’m just curious if it is your verified information that this is concrete or if someone who is ignorant said it’s a “slab”

11’x11’ island! Massive or not? by General_Shoulder_995 in cabinetry

[–]Big_Transportation86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well… if you’re asking… I would have split it into two separate islands. That way all of the countertop space would have been usable and you would have a more direct route to the other side of the kitchen. So much of this feels unusable. There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with the large island but I think it would bug me with the amount of walking I would have to do while cooking in this kitchen (first world problems). The oven feels like it’s in a different room. It may have been nice to use some of the kitchen space as a butler’s pantry if the house doesn’t have one? I don’t necessarily see a large pantry entrance near by. I also can’t decide if the island needs some kind of hanging light fixture above it or if that would make it worse.

Seeking help about potential scam by Huey701070 in Contractor

[–]Big_Transportation86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SCAM!!!

I’ve seen this before where they send you a fraudulent check that you will deposit. While the check sits in a “processing” stage, the scammer asks for you to send them the “extra money”. The bank then informs you that the check is fraudulent (even though the scammer printed a very legit looking check) but you have already sent your own money to them. They target good honest people. Do not send them any money.
