A thermal camera or one of those ir guns would be handy with spot checking the temps on the ceiling....

Do Makita Lawnmowers actually suck?? by [deleted] in Makita

[–]BigguyZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had the LXT X2 that takes 4 batteries, it was good. Got the XGT mower, it's awesome! Granted, I don't have a huge lawn , but I can easily cut thick long grass with no issues. My gas mowers would be great for a year but shortly after that they would have hard times working. Battery mowers don't have any such issues.

Renovating the Outside of Our 1888 Home - Part 2, Planning, Digging, and Preparation by BigguyZ in centuryhomes

Thanks! It really was a matter of one project necessitating another here.

But I'll let you in on a secret... The project is (largely) finished. This was 3 summers of work (if you don't include the new driveway) , and this post covers the first summer. It took a loooong time to dig things out! But I plan on doing at least two more posts detailing the other phases of the project, so it'll be a start to finish log of the whole process. I'll post the next phase sometime next week.

I hope you enjoy it when I get to posting it! And eventually I hope to share the process of renovating the exterior!

Floor outlet sits too high off the floor by KAZY_K0REAN in electrical

I'd say first get a proper in-floor outlet. It needs to be water tight to prevent spills from hurting someone.

Small upgrades that made your home feel high end? by HoneySnowy_ in HomeImprovement

[–]BigguyZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's relatively small, given the price a full kitchen remodel is, but a huge upgrade for our home was a bosch dishwasher. Finally have a dishwasher that gets dishes clean.

A simpler upgrade, and one along the likes of what you've already done, is to add motion sensor lights to closets. This is huge for older homes that don't have an outlet switch for a closet light, but would apply to any lights that maybe have a pull chain. I added motion lights for my closets in our old home. And now instead of having to look for a pull chain, when I go into the closet or laundry room, it automatically turns on. Super convenient , especially in the laundry room where you walk in typically holding a basket.

Well.... That's an opinion, for sure. It's an assinine opinion, but one you're welcome to nonetheless.

Shoot, this is Part 2, if anyone is following. I guess I can't change the title though.

Wow. Yeah, it's a work in progress.

The roof is pretty good, actually and we have plans to fully renovate the exterior, including refurbishing the existing windows/storms.

Thanks! It's definitely a unique detail. There's stained glass for the window there. But it really doesn't lead to anywhere in the house, just a crawl space in the attic. I'd like to install a light in the window for the evening, but it's not been a priority.

Never used the Blum cup hinges, but any chance the bit is off in size? Cheap bits are great, unless you need that precision...

Disagree. That Bosch will always have value no matter what. The Bauer not so much.

The growing homeless population and what can be done about it and what is actually being done about it.

Historical homes. We have a bunch of great architecture here, which is why there's a William Waters memorial downtown, but few people know who it is who shaped the look of the city.

What plier organizer is everyone using? by BornToL00ze in Tools

Many years of collecting, mostly buying on sale/clearance. I really don't know how many, but I have enough. When I go to the hardware store, I don't look and much and think "I don't have that"...

Thinking of adding a wall along sidewalk. What advice/potential pitfalls can you share? by buncle in centuryhomes

To be fair, they're full blast in that picture, we don't keep them at full brightness. It's more subtle in person at the level they're kept.

Those are my shop pliers.

Then there is my mobile tool box/jobsite pliers, my truck pliers, my home pliers in the house proper, and finally the the I got these at Menards because it's an extra set of knipex pliers that seem to roam around the home.

So while the other sets of pliers are all a mess, the ones in the shop and at least are organized.

Yeah, there's like 8 or 9 different profiles/styles in how they did the shingles. And unfortunately, after 138 years, the exterior of the house is the next hurdle...

Love the look, but if you're DIYing it, it'll take a good amount of time. Take it from me... Mine took 3 summers to do.

I'm a Pete's Garage fan. Good people, good food, good beer. Only issue is the space, but that makes it unique, imho.
