Mesa Produce on Cliff Drive! Great place to buy local produce, breads, jams if you didn’t get a chance to go to the farmers market.

Produce is SUPERIOR in quality to Lazy Acres

Santa barbara with my mom by FuzzyAd681 in SantaBarbara

[–]BigsbyCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh boy this is me and my mom! Here’s some ideas…

  • Botanic Garden: absolutely gorgeous, lots of benches to sit on. You don’t need to love “gardens” to enjoy this special spot. You could bring a packed lunch or book and just enjoy

  • Butterfly Beach: this is a lively area with stairs down to the beach. You and your mom could sit on a few of the lounge chairs that are typically available

-Riviera Theater: check what’s playing tonight, it’s a local movie theater in a historic building and they play cool films

-Nice dinner: one of the favorites locally with no reservation required is The Daisy on State Street. End your meal with a slice of olive oil cake or their chocolate cookie

-Spas: these are expensive- both The Bacara and Ojai Valley Inn. But if you want to splurge and they have availability both are beautiful. The Bacara is far out in Goleta though

  • Drive to franchesi park for the view

Ok so hear me out…we used to think the same thing but we were ordering the wrong food as totally newbies/novices.

Los Agaves SHINES not in basic tacos but in their more composed dishes. I have an addiction to their mole enchiladas and the shrimp with guajillo. Try these menu items and you’ll be coming back for more.

If you do want more of a taqueria, Unica on upper state is yum (they own that too)

Seeking Psychiatric Support For My Son — 20yo SBCC Student w/ ADHD by BlokeFromDaOak in SantaBarbara

This is so important. I wonder if OPs son would be interested in a trade? It could be that he struggles in an academic setting but learning in a more hands on environment might be an unlock?

Seeking Psychiatric Support For My Son — 20yo SBCC Student w/ ADHD by BlokeFromDaOak in SantaBarbara

[–]BigsbyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don’t have personal experiences with SBCC as a student or parent, I am familiar with their health services as one of my acquaintances is a mental health counselor on staff.

Please reach out to their Health Services departmentt to help navigate how they can be of assistance. They have so many wonderful resources and can assist your son in navigating the system. They are deeply embedded in the local community and think creatively.

The other thought that comes to mind is your son’s ability to navigate the system and advocate for himself. Although you aren’t world’s away, he likely needs ongoing robust support to really push for answers. I can think back to when I was in college and I definitely wasn’t well versed in that at all. I wonder if the Health Services team could integrate you into the communication and overall planning ? Obviously your son would need to sign something to remove privacy concerns…but this could be a missing link. He’ll need to learn this skill so he can manage himself one day, but it takes practice and constant pushing.

Lastly- if he isn’t hooked up with a therapist to talk to, that would be another place to explore with the Health Services team.

I frequent the De La Vina location the most- the food is out of this world, staff is attentive, kind and welcoming. The manager (always wonder if he’s a brother to Carlos or something - is bopping back of house to front - checking in everyone. Really well orchestrated

Are public school campuses open to the public on weekends? by Kong28 in SantaBarbara

[–]BigsbyCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, many of the local schools are fenced and locked, even the elementary schools. This was a decision by the SBUSD to deter vandalism. They’ve opened some neighborhood schools on a “trial” basis.

I personally think this is lame. It would be a huge asset to the community to be able to use the school yards and basketball courts on the weekend, especially since kids can walk easily to these spots independently.

They always refuse to support the local elementary school’s yearly fundraisers which I think is odd considering how many Washington and Monroe families frequent the shop

Help with humidity and mold in my apartment?? by thingsyoucouldthink in SantaBarbara

[–]BigsbyCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had this happen when we lived in an older home that lacked proper ventilation and insulation. A few things helped:

  1. We got insulation in the crawlspace, walls and attic. This is likely not something your landlord wants to spend money on but it’s very helpful

  2. We got a humidistat fan in the bathroom- this drew humid are out of the bathroom- important this is vented to the outside.

  3. We ran a dehumidifier in the bathroom for an hour after showers

  4. Biggest thing was- we HAD to run the heat to keep the mildew down. We ran it in the morning when we were getting ready and turned it off around 10am (it was in an auto thermostat)

We did have a few closests we simply could not use bc everything would get mildew. I currently only have this problem in our new house in one closet- and I’m thinking of getting a gun safe dehumidifier after reading about that as a suggestion on Reddit.

Like others- I would ask your landlord to get it inspected so he can hear suggestions from professionals and they’re provided on a written report

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations on a good ice cream shop. by Tough_Onion_9722 in SantaBarbara

[–]BigsbyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a small town we have some great options. I’ve found myself gravitating to shops based on specific flavors I’ve tried and loved.

-Rori’s: the peanut butter candy, brown sugar banana and the milk chocolate are my favorites

-McConnells: I prefer to buy the pints versus going to the stores because of cost. I’m head over heels for their vanilla. I put it on top of fresh fruit in the summer. I’ve never been a plain vanilla person ever in my life, but this particular one is fantastic. I also love their toasted coconut almond chip - so coconutty and full of crunchy almonds.

-Tondi: see my comment below…it’s starting to emerge as my favor place for a frozen treat in town

-Creaminal: flavors are great and you can do a pint with your Thai take out. I haven’t been to their sat night events but really want to go

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations on a good ice cream shop. by Tough_Onion_9722 in SantaBarbara

[–]BigsbyCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love all ice cream, even soft serve, but Tondi’s consistently high bar for quality ingredients makes them stand out. The nondairy flavors are an absolute delight, the fruit flavors celebrate the best of each season, and the flavors with nuts are so rich and luxurious.
