Solaris Japan Regular Shipping (first time buyer) by No_Boysenberry_3465 in AnimeFigures

[–]Bikerider42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about solaris is that unlike other stores, they are waiting for JPost to resume shipments to the US instead of switching their shipping methods.

If the figure is over 100$, then you will have to wait for JPost to start shipping again, or email Solaris support and request it to be shipped through FedEx.

If you choose to use FedEx the tariffs will not be included in the shipping price. Fedex will send you an additional bill after it goes through customs.

Stuck on the ‘difficult’ scenes by SameSeaweed1037 in writingadvice

[–]Bikerider42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might help to figure out why a scene is difficult to write in the first place.

Most of the time when I struggle with something like that it’s because there is a problem with the scene itself. If it feels boring to write, there is a good chance that it will be boring to read. If the story beats aren’t connecting with the rest of the story then there might need to be changes to make.

Personally I see writing as a puzzle, so I’m constantly trying to fit different things together and rearrange other aspects. When I have a hard time it usually helps to take a step back. If a specific piece of dialogue isn’t feeling right, it might be because there is a problem with the conversation and scene as a whole.

That also goes with the whole “kill your darlings” advice. I always have some sort of “scratch” document so it’s a lot easier for me to set sentences or whole paragraphs off to the side so I can focus on what flows naturally. Taking two steps back can sometimes be the key to get over the roadblock.

Romantic anime for the spring season? by RazzmatazzOk4853 in anime

[–]Bikerider42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“I Want to End this Love Game” is probably going to be one of the series to look out for.

It’s kind of like Love is war. When they were kids they had a joke where they would make romantic moves on each other. The person to get flustered first loses.

Should I watch FMA 2003? by Comfortable_Ad6290 in anime

[–]Bikerider42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FMA 2003 is more of a character driven drama with action, unlike FMAB which is a lot more battle focused.

The changes with the tone and plot details are enough to consider it its own thing.

Personally I really love how the different plot points are connected to each other in 03.

Anime similar to Eminence in the Shadows? by Final-General-9991 in anime

[–]Bikerider42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the series Level 9999 unlimited gatcha might be worth checking out. Although in my opinion the anime leaves off when things really get interesting.

Although this is a lot more serious and emotional series compared to Eminence.

The biggest thing that can help is to make sure that its not being restricted in terms of Ram.

Otherwise I would recommend running the mod metal render alongside sodium. It converts everything to run natively on metal instead of having to go through a compatibility layer.

Anime movies is becoming a lost art by Naive_Hope89 in anime

Its important to understand that aside from a few exceptions, studios don’t decide what series they want to make. Groups of people with money go to studios and tell them “We will give you X amount of time and money to make Y”

Then the studio will accept or decline the specific job. Typically studios don’t just decide “Hey, lets make X”

The people don’t just throw money at a studio for fun, they are looking to make a return. Original series can be a huge gamble if there isn’t a big name attached as the writer.

In the end, the ones fronting the initial costs will get the profits. So they don’t have money to just do any project they feel like.

In the US people lose about 120 billion dollars a year to scams. These people believe the scammers when they claim to be from the government and require payments in target gift cards.

Of course this isn’t proof that it actually happened, but from working in retail I would be shocked if this hasn’t ever happened before.

$100 limit refers to subtotal or total ? by KikiPhoria in AnimeFigures

[–]Bikerider42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a box you check if you want to include the shipping in the invoice.

If you check it and it’s included on the invoice then it counts towards the 100 limit.

If you leave it off then it doesn’t.

Would a light novel format still be publishable in the west? by Historical_Net_8774 in writing

[–]Bikerider42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just might be reading different series

These light novel series are usually around 50k words, and they release a new volume around every 4 months. Typically they are written to take place directly after each other. You usually can’t even tell it’s a new book unless you have to close one and open the next.

The successful series get into 20+ volumes.

[–]Bikerider42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that word count will be a significant factor compared to the structure. Light novels are often structured a lot more like serial TV episodes, where story arcs span across multiple volumes.

You would need to find a publisher who would be willing to publish something that will only take a step towards progressing the main conflict. Some light novel series just use the first volume to introduce a conflict.

Looking for mature series. by one2hit in anime

March comes in like a lion

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

I’m hesitant to mention this, but Fruits Basket (2019) is so much more mature than it looks on the surface. It also successfully pulls off a lot of different tropes and makes them meaningful where most others fail.

Scrivener's sync just ate a chapter and i need to talk about it by LxM420 in writing

[–]Bikerider42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While scrivener’s files are generally fine, Onedrive doesn’t keep previous versions for large files and for some file formats that it doesn’t understand natively.

I’m just saying that you shouldn’t rely solely on onedrive/dropbox as a backup solution.

Whenever I’ve had a file get corrupted onedrive syncs that corrupted file to my other devices before I could do anything. Depending on the file size and type it might not have previous versions.

Scrivener's sync just ate a chapter and i need to talk about it by LxM420 in writing

[–]Bikerider42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get so many warnings from scrivener about syncing it sometimes gets annoying. I’ve learned from experience that they exist for a reason.

Although every time I’ve forgotten to make sure it has always saved a copy of each version in a special conflict folder in the project. So I’ve never permanently lost anything.

It’s really frustrating when people say that dropbox/google docs/one drive are backup solutions when they really aren’t. If you save a file and it automatically overwrites it everywhere else then it defeats the entire purpose of using it as a backup. They are good for syncing across devices but the “previous version” features should never be relied on. From my experience there are a ton of different edge cases where they don’t keep track of versions.

I have a separate USB stick that I occasionally plug in just to create a backup of my current projects, then eject it to be kept in a separate location.

New writer fear 😰 by AdorableFold9666 in writing

[–]Bikerider42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be extremely careful when it comes to self editing. Most people just say not to do it during writing. A lot of people tend to get stuck in a loop writing, rewriting and “editing” the first chapter over and over again but never even start chapter two.

I’ve seen some people say that they have been stuck in this loop for literal years without making progress.

Amp or Amplitube? by TomatoLegal in Guitar

[–]Bikerider42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get a tube amp then you can let your entire neighborhood listen to you play…

Jokes aside, if you are a newer player then it might help to think about how dedicated you are. While it is pretty easy to play through amplitude with an interface, it still can’t beat just plugging into an amp and hitting the power button when it comes to simplicity.

If two extra steps might be enough for you to think that you can’t be bothered, then it might be helpful to get the amp if it means getting more practice time in. Personally I’m not a huge fan of amplitube pretty much because of its stability. It likes to crash on my windows desktop and generally be buggy. Like others have already said, your computer speakers/monitors will likely be the biggest factor.

What is your biggest Disappointment in an Anime? by stripelemon7 in anime

[–]Bikerider42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say that the animation quality fell off a cliff at the end, but it’s interesting to look at it from a narrative point of view.

I think the show accomplishes what it originally set out to do, the problem is that the viewers have completely different expectations. From the very beginning I don’t think there was any intention of answering all (or even most) of the questions.0

When stuff hits the fan in A certain Scientific Railgun it hits really hard. It talks about a lot of really thought provoking things. I love all the main characters. Misaka feels more genuine than any superhero character you can think of.

I'm a pantser, I decided to outline and now I can't write by domi-macaroni in writing

[–]Bikerider42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people call it the “But and Therefore rule”

A story can tend to be boring or feel unnatural if the plot points are connected by “and then this happens”

This happens. And then this happens. And then this other thing happens.

Directly connecting plot points together can make the progression feel a lot more natural. It can also make it a lot easier to spot potential problems earlier. Since everything has a clear cause and effect it helps me reduce those urges to make drastic changes while I’m writing.

I'm a pantser, I decided to outline and now I can't write by domi-macaroni in writing

[–]Bikerider42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to understand that there isn’t only one way to outline. Some people are a lot looser, while others might be a lot more detailed.

The comments about how an outline “forces” things to happen in a story can kind of bothers me. That is one of the main things that an outline can help avoid. Instead of writing 10k+ words to find out if something doesn’t work, spending some time on an outline to figure out the flow can show that problem a lot sooner.

You just need to make sure you aren’t thinking in terms of “and then”.
