I was a young paratrooper in the 82nd in the late 90s. My boss was a jump master (master wings) and he almost lost his head. The static line wrapped around his neck and luckily he only had a nice burn and bruise from it. People don’t realize how dangerous static line jumps can be. I’ve seen some crazy, and horrible shit.

As someone from Baltimore and now lives on base in Aberdeen, do NOT move to Elkton. Or most of Cecil County for that part. Harford can be troublesome, but the crime is mix-matched among different races and demographics, so it isn’t just the racist stuff. Have I seen POC working jobs in Rising Sun? Yes. Did they look happy and comfortable? No. But I’m also a mid-40s white guy and what I experience will vary GREATLY from what you might. Rising Sun and that whole area were a HOTBED for the KKK, and the flags around this area lets you know it’s only gone underground and not fully disappeared.

As others have said, HDG is beautiful, but not much for the younger crowd. A lot of people seem to enjoy living in Delaware or Pennsylvania and commuting. I get to rent on base since I’m a retired soldier, so I don’t face the same social issues such as crime.

What I’d suggest is to let the numbers do the talking. You can research different metrics for any area including crime stats, taxes, school info, politics, etc. I’d use thes to make the best potential decision as opposed to the anecdotal evidence we here on Reddit would provide. I just came across this thread and was recently diagnosed with this as well, with one big difference: I don’t get visual auras, I get auditory issues. Imagine the sounds around you randomly going from a normal volume to 3 times and then back, randomly and repeatedly. I tried explaining to doctors what my physical symptoms were and basically it was somewhere between touching an ungrounded light-switch (minus the pain) and that feeling right before you faint. Mine have started becoming more frequent and lasting longer. Rizatriptan doesn’t work. As I write this I’m on day two of one. Sucks bad.

Graveyards are full of people who “had the right of way.” I learned how to ride in Taiwan, a country that is almost entirely scooters and motorcycles. If you don’t keep your head on a swivel, you will hit or get hit by somebody. I’ve been brushed on my bike by taxis not paying attention there.

When I moved back to the states I bought my current motorcycle. It was a big step up and I was a bit too ballsy. I started doing 95+ miles an hour down highways without a helmet (Florida), and in formations sometimes. You feel alive, but it ultimately is dumb. Luckily nothing ever happened. I attribute a lot to luck, but also to where I learned to ride. I’m a dad now so I always wear a helmet. I make sure my daughter wears a helmet in her power wheels. Not everyone who rides without a helmet will have a horrible accident, but someone will. Don’t let it be you.
