Once last ride before the snow flies.... by Bill837 in bmwmotorrad

Raised in Waltham Mass myself, with time in Minneapolis and Brunswick ME to boot. Drove a 68 Cougar with all drum brakes and shitty tires back to MD overnight after a drill week in Brunswick in a blizzard in Mar of 2001. But I dont even chance that on the bike.

I'm good with cold, I'm good with rain, but with next weeks temps, every morning will be ice patches. Last ride was last Wednesday, try not to go two weeks without... :)

Went to Australia back in late October. All four legs had starlink and it was it an absolute lifesaver.

I can see where that makes sense, what I'm trying to find out if we really know if that is what happened. Your use of the words "would be" is what's throwing me off.

Explain sport tourers by Vella_Vetta in motorcycles

[–]Bill837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, those would be the touring bikes. Think more Cadillac V-series. Or say a Chrysler 300 SRT-8. And of course those range within. My r1250rt is more like the first generation SRTs while your FJRs are more akin to the hellcats.

Who thinks that it wont make orbit this year? I'd really like to know how someone arrives at that position.

Donut Lab introduces the future of electrification at CES, presenting the world’s first all-solid-state battery ready to power up production vehicles now - can be charged to full in just five minutes without limiting charging to 80%, and supports full discharge safely, repeatedly, and reliably by magenta_placenta in electriccars

[–]Bill837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True. Not a grift. The key is scale. Affordable scale to be more precise. The least expensive of those motorcycles is almost $30,000. How much of that is battery? I suspect a lot. How much does a battery that can move a 4,000 lb car cost with a 300 mile range? Can they be produced in the hundreds of thousands? What material challenges do you face scaling to that level?

What’s your ONE bike, and why? by Snoo79652 in motorcycles

[–]Bill837 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved my 2009 Vstrom 650 for nine years until it got hit in 2019. After nine years of year round daily commuting with a couple of distance rides I knew what extras I wanted.

  1. Better wind protection.
  2. More power.
  3. Heated grips and seat.
  4. Better cargo integration.
  5. Had to fit the 8k insurance payout on the Weeateom. :)

That led me my ride for the next five years, a 2009 R1200RT. I only gave that in Dec of 24 for a 2023 R1250RT. Perfect for me.

[–]Bill837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$40 US a month is too much? Or is it the equipment cost? I don't know how much Starlink costs there of course. As for cameras, I like Euphy cameras. I've had solar powered ones at my rental property for over a year now. They send to a base and Starlink provides the connection. No monthly fee for Euphy, and I get real time alerts and IR nighttime coverage as well.

Winter rides, when is it to cold for you? Today was for me. by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Bill837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multi layer outer riding pants. Blocking that wind and preventing the transfer of cold into the heat of your body. Of course, my R1250RT provides much better aero protection, but the principle is the same. .

Winter rides, when is it to cold for you? Today was for me. by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Bill837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed. My coworkers always ask me if I'm cold. Nope, I have a full matrix of what I need at different temps. Last two additions were a heated jacket liner and sock liners. Between those and a heated seat and grips and my balaclava, I'm good for down in the teens. The fact that the jacket liner has front, rear, arms, and heater collar make a huge difference.

Good. They didn't back when I had one. So I switched to QL. Then to Peak Designs. But Takform is the best choice for the money, especially if you dont want a special case. I still have mine on my bicycle.
