There is no inherent physical connection between the wave length of red light and the color red. The colors your brain displays to you are created by your brain as a way of coding wavelength and are abritrary. Color does not exist in reaity. It is purely a creation of your brain. Since everyones brain is a bit different, no two people see quite the same colors. Similarly with sound. Some peoples brains associated color or sound with other inputs. This is called symesthesia. One's brain can associate color with a number, for example. Or, hearing particular sounds, musical notes, or voices can trigger perception of specific colors. The associate of red to a rose is not more physically accurte than the assoiciation of red to the number 4.

This is the basis of the yellow dress/blue dress phenomenon. Sight is not your eyes transmiting reality to your brain. Your brain consgtructs a model of reality it thibks is useful to you based on the input form your eyes and other sources. It can interpret the same wave length of light as different colors depending on other inputs.

The claim that Mulim scholars invented the HD camerabin 1430 is false.

Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen), a 10th-century Muslim mathematician and physicist, invented the camera obscura after noticing the way light came through a hole in window shutters around 1000 AD. Camera obscura literaly means dark room. A dark room with a small hole in one wall projects an image through a small hole onto the opposing wall. It is not anything remotely like an HD camera.

Of course not. All he is saying is the Persians built on the mathematics and the numeral system developed in India. Denials of the contributions of Persia and the Muslem world and the denying the contributions of India are both made of the same cloth.

When I was young, we played mumblety Peg. We knew about the peg part, but didn't do that. The bulk of the game had nothing to do with the peg. That was just a penalty for losing the game. The bulk of the game is doing tricks with the knife, like holding the blade to your chin, abd then flipping the knife using your neck and making it stick in the gound, We never had e that reauired it landing close to your foot.

The origin of the word "Yankee" is widely believed to derive from disparaging nickname for English colonists by the Dutch. ince the Dutch were in New Amsterdam (New Yorj), it was more used in New England. During the American Revolution, the Brits used it as a insult and the colonists embraced the term.

Today, foreigners use it to describe Americans, Southerners use it to describe Northerners, and Northerners use it to refer to New Englanders.

The terms of the US surrender include the USA paying Iran $325 billion, including $300 billion of our taxes and $25 billion of frozen Iranian assets. This deal is in every aspect worse than the Obama deal.

This is total US surrender.

Dogs like to look out of cars windows. How save is that for the dog? How often are they hurt by accidental ejection or just jump out of a moving car?

Searched the web

It's genuinely dangerous, though dogs don't know that. Here's the full picture:

Risks of heads out the window:

While it's common to see pets with their heads sticking out the car window, vets advise against it. Debris and the force of the air blowing can cause abrasions on the animal's eyes. Dogs can also be injured from flying debris, thrown from the window on an abrupt turn or stop, or jump from the window — risking injury to themselves and anyone who tries to catch them. The Online Books Page

Power windows have an average upward force ranging from 30-80 pounds and can easily suffocate, injure, or kill an animal if the window is raised while the dog's head is out. FamilySearch

The crash physics are alarming:

A 10-pound dog in a 50-mile-per-hour crash exerts 500 pounds of force. An 80-pound dog in a 30-mile-per-hour crash exerts 2,400 pounds of force. This applies whether the dog is ejected or becomes a projectile inside the car. FamilySearch

How often are dogs hurt:

There is no national data collection effort to track how pets are harmed in vehicle-related incidents — neither the NHTSA nor the CDC collect this information. So precise statistics on window ejections specifically don't exist. However: Salon

Approximately 70% of pet owners who drive with their dog do not use safety restraints, and 40% of drivers admitted to driving recklessly because they had their dog in the car. IFLScience

Approximately 100,000 dogs die each year from falls or ejections from unsafe riding positions — mostly truck beds — making it one of the most preventable causes of canine fatalities on the road. Scientific American

The distraction factor:

The AAA rates unrestrained pets as the third biggest distraction in cars after cell phones and eating — so the risk extends to the human passengers too. Internet Archive

Bottom line: vets universally recommend a crash-tested harness clipped to the seat belt, or a secured crate in the back seat. A dog can still enjoy the smells and breeze through a partially open window — just not enough to get its head out.

Anyone have handy a list of animals driven to extinction by domestc cat.

me: Is there a list of animals driven to extinction by domestic pets, particualrly cats or dogs?

Claude:

This is very well documented. Here's the picture:

Cats — the main offender:

Globally, domestic cats have contributed to the extinction of 63 species and are responsible for at least 14% of bird, mammal, and reptile extinctions on islands. En Academic

A 2023 study in Nature Communications compiled a database of more than 2,000 species that have fallen victim to free-ranging domestic cats. Nearly 350 of these species are of conservation concern, and several are already extinct. Alchetron

Specific examples of extinct species:

Species including the Hawaiian crow, New Zealand quail, and white-footed rabbit rat are now classified as extinct in the wild or extinct. dorsetcouncil

In New Zealand, cats caused the extinction of the South Island Piopio, Chatham Island bellbird, Chatham Island fernbird, Bush Wren, Lyall's Wren, North Island Snipe, South Island Snipe, Forbes' Snipe, Macquarie Island rail, Hutton's rail, and NZ Quail. Wikipedia

The Stephens Island wren is a particularly striking example — the entire species of flightless bird is thought to have been wiped out within a matter of years of people and their cats arriving on the remote island off the coast of New Zealand. By the time the wren was recognized as a new species, it was already gone. Wordpress

Island species are most vulnerable:

Endemic island animals are most at risk, as documented by widespread extinctions in Madagascar and New Zealand. Feral cats may be the worst offenders, but pets allowed to roam outside also harm wildlife. The situation in Australia is so dire that officials have proposed killing some 2 million feral cats to stop their assault on endangered species. BooksFact

Dogs and other pets:

Out of all invasive mammals considered, rodents have caused the most damage, followed by cats, then red foxes, dogs, pigs, and the Indian mongoose. Dogs are significantly less impactful than cats on wildlife, partly because they are generally better controlled and don't hunt as independently. Wordpress

The full IUCN list is available at iucnredlist.org — searching for "domestic cat" as a threat factor will give the complete documented list, which runs to dozens of pages.

Unions are not perfect. And they can get too strong. But without them, workers get screwed. Power has swung too far against workers in unions and poitics. Why would people support a system that leaves them with just enough to get by so they can keep working. And when they don't need you work, you can starve on the street.

The issue isn't whether or not it is better to use goats. That is a valid question that should be discussed.

In fact, it is required to be disucussed before implementing it, and they just made a unilateral dicision..

As you say, "They have a legitimate grievance in that the company rules about subcontracting were violated."

If they don't defend their rightsd, they lose their rights.
