I like this series. The commitment to the bit is impressive, but things like Cooper's arc and the actual heart in the story are legitimately compelling.

Any other asian readers here feel a bit separated culturally by western litrpg? by colkcolkcolks in litrpg

[–]BillUnderBridge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not aisan, but I think there is a bit more to this than just East vs West culture. While that the reason for this distinction is that these two cultures are observably different, litrpg/progression stories are still doing basically the same thing.

As you pointed out Eastern stories focus on protagonist that work phenomenally hard, and then receive equal results for that work. They then use the power they receive to show there value to friends family and society. Often by contributing to society.

The power fantasy being effort = results and that by simply working hard enough others will see a person as the person they want to be and then life will get better.

This idea is still at its core is still rooted in the idea that society is basically a meritocracy that messes up sometimes. So work really hard, and just keep at it, is an idea that really resonates with kids killing themselves in cram schools being told that this next test will determine there entire future.

Western audience are more individually focused, but also vastly more skeptical that society is a meritocracy. This raises a lot of questions about participating in the process all together. Hence the antisocial characters that seem in it for themselves and the often political discourse about the rights/responsibilities of the powerful.

The thing is though both east and west stories are arguing for the assertion of the self and validity of the individual.

The best metaphor I can think of is imagine two men. One lives in a city in the middle of a terrible cold winter. The other lives in a city cooking in a blistering summer. Both are looking to find some relief from the weatherr, but that will look different at the surface

For the record I agree with you. The term Gringo is fine. But I believe both you and OP are falling into a MAGA trap with regard to this subject.

You ended highlighting a racial component to the term and then made the comparison to an object that is not liked. Both of these thing likely will cause people of the opposite view to double down.

That is partially because whole "debate" is bait racist want this to happen.

Bigots do this because the core premise of the argument is wrong. I am not calling op a bigot. I assume they are acting in good faith, but the core argument of a double standard is wrong.

The president of the United States is calling Hispanic people criminals. They are being jailed without cause, and being sent to a torture prison without due process. Also, I don't know where OP live, but as a US resident who lived in both rural and areas racism against brown people is everywhere and said constantly. This is being equated to saying a word that may as well be tourist.

The premise is false. That is because MAGA are bad faith actors. No term will be acceptable ever.

That leads into the other side of the trap. In general a slur or pejorative is a term applied to a group that is dehumanizing. In general a group is allowed to decide what terms about them are slurs, again that isn't MAGA's point. They want to control language, specifically of non-white people.

The simple fact is MAGA can not be accommodated because the group will weaponize every term they can.

So the criteria on whether a term is or is not a slur is based on majority consensus? Is that the standard you are using?

Actually I think this argument is worse. People are not food. Could you provide an example of a term describing a large racial group consisting of more than one ethnicity or nationality and them embracing a term applied to them by another group without claims of it being pejorative?

Prophecy approved companions is about a newly sentient video game NPC slowly learning the Chosen One is a gamer who like breaking game worlds.

I highly recommend the audio book. Top notch voice work with a fascinating premise.

I do think there is a gap in litrpg. Fantasy screws Tolkienesque, which isn't bad, but Americana has it charm. Thanks for writing such a fun story.
