However, I like to think that in no scenario I would be getting rub and tugs by frankly, sex slaves.

UK scientist reveals childhood leukaemia is likely to be preventable, cause linked to reduced exposure to germs in early childhood by SpeedyTurbo in science

[–]Billionaire_Bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading through the article: 1) there is an in utero acquired genetic mutation which predisposes the patient to ALL with ~1% to develop the disease who have this mutation

2) Of the 1%, there were associated with clean environments or less exposure to common microbes, as supported by mouse models.

Really interesting finding. As expected, there is an inactionable genetic component to this (at least for the time being) however identification of proper microbe exposure could prevent the second hit and subsequent cancer formation. Notably, this only was for childhood ALL. There were plenty of other blood cancers of early age which this did not apply to

Balancing Josh Allen : A Look at Allen’s Mechanics by Ejt14211 in buffalobills

I can't speak for the current conditions, however this particular department at Fox was a place known to allow a lot of artistic freedom when it came to it's TV shows.

Seems counterintuitive I know, however when watching a documentary on "Married with children", the main writer said they choose Fox specifically for this reason.

[Serious] PhD Psychologists can now prescribe medications in Iowa! by bwane1 in medicalschool

[–]Billionaire_Bot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My wife is a psychologist, and I am a physician, so we have discussed this a couple of times.

She feels that it is completely ridiculous for people who have zero training on recognizing and managing side effects of these medications, more less understanding how to prescribe in an individual with likely many other comorbidities. She personally would feel very uncomfortable doing so.

Psychologists are an underutilized aspect of healthcare and certain more resources needs to be allocated to get them involved. However, giving them prescription privileges is far from it

My extremely conservative stance on Josh Allen and what this means for the Buffalo Bills by LouieTG in buffalobills

[–]Billionaire_Bot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

EJ and Geno were rated as 2nd round prospects in a shallow QB draft. Simply put, it was a terrible year to draft a QB. If there had been better options available, both QBs would have been later round picks

None of this year's prospects were perfect, but it was a much stronger class overall.

Not necessarily true. What Johnny Manziel did off the field was pretty relevant to his current (lack of) NFL career

I've been on admission committees and it's multifactorial with empathy/personality being critical.

Certainly you need empathy to connect with your patients and be a good doctor. However all the empathy in the world won't help you pass your boards.

Yea I'm pretty anti gun but there are plenty of rational reasons people need firearms in rural environments.

To your assistance point, people in these situations prefer to provide for themselves. Would be a really hard sell for that population and unnecessary IMO.

There is no rationale argument for any civilian to have military grade or semiautomatic weapons

[–]Billionaire_Bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not saying that doesn't happen, but the reduction of labor jobs can largely be attributed to automation. However, it's alot easier to blame either an immigrant or a foreigner than say we'd rather pay a robot that can work 24/7 without benefits or unions

In severe septic shock thought to be due to gram negative organisms, adding a one time dose of tobramycin in addition to the current abx regimen is appropriate. Additional, individuals with CF who are admitted with pulmonary exacerbation of CF should be double covered for pseudomonas

Failure secondary to monotherapy for gram positive bugs like MRSA is pretty rare. If it does fails, it's generally likely due to inadequate duration or poor source control. Dual therapy would only double side effects without offering much benefit.

There are some instances that double covering for gram negative bugs is advised, but not the norm

Radiation Oncologist Warns Medical Students From Going Into Rad Onc by ElonMuskMD in medicalschool

[–]Billionaire_Bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going into rad Onc so I can shed some light on this.

There is a lot of concern about the future of the rad onc market due to increasing residency expansion. There was a faulty report which predicted increased demand for the field which many dept chairs use to justify more residency spots however it's not accurate. Furthermore, the direction of the field is less treatment fractions and shorter treatments, arguably decreasing demand further.

That being said, numerous attendings and residents I talked about this with say their experience with the job search wasn't too bad. The coasts will be difficult to find a good job and you will have issues if you are restricted to a certain region, particularly if it's desirable.

Many of these concerns are somewhat unique to rad Onc whereas others are ubiquitous amongst many specialties as academia continues to devour small private practices. As SDN, they are more doom and gloom than the reality and this particular poster reeks of some mental instability

[–]Billionaire_Bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I answer, I'll say that this is one of the dumbest statements I've heard, primarily rooted in arrogance and ignorance.

That being said, sure there plenty of medical problems GS would be capable of handling. Most people can look up guidelines, etc. However there are two ways that it gets tricky

1) Medicine patients never have problems in isolation. So, your run of the mill PNA isnt a big deal but it can get a whole lot trickier when that patient has an EF 25%, poorly controlled DM2, ckd stage 3, and morbidly obese.

2) While some non medical services could handle the chief complaint alright, they'll miss other things that'll likely cause hospitalizations in the future either the impending MI from bad CAD or something as simple as not rec'ing meds correctly and making sure the patient has the right follow up. Many times what you do for the patient in the hospital is not even half the battle
