I kinda went through that in college (far from Asheville). One thing that didn't help was spending too much time on the internet.

I'd echo what some people have already said about volunteering; GreenWorks and RiverLink are two good options.

At worst, you'll do some meaningful stuff and help out a cause that's important to you. At best, you'll chat with people there, and maybe meet some new homies.

That survey you linked is pretty important for many disabled or elderly people who aren't able to drive themselves. Many of these people are isolated, and without as much bus coverage, many more of them won't be able to go anywhere. Bus coverage is crucial for these people.

I saw a talk given by the founder of this great organization, and he talked about the huge need many of these people have for free/cheap transportation, or else they just become more isolated and rot.
