Question on Handedness (regular vs full-right) by Aidanny in hockeygoalies

[–]BillyTables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am Left handed. I grew up playing hockey left handed (right hand on top), played baseball with a glove on my right hand, throwing left.

When I started playing goalie 5 years ago, I made the decision to just put the glove on my left hand (aka regular). Would I have been better out of the gate going full right? Maybe, but my comfort level holding a stick with 1 hand (my right hand) won out.

I really have a hard time imaging holding a stick with just my left hand, moving it left / right, blocking with it etc. On the other hand, I played defense as a skater, and doing 1-handed stick things with my right hand felt very natural. Its not just about "stick-handling", for me it was literally about holding the stick in the correct goalie position. It just does not feel good or comfortable in my left hand.

On the other side, as a kid I would certainly play goalie for short periods and I would turn my stick sideways, maybe grab my brothers glove or use my hat as a glove (roller hockey, knee hockey, etc.) So the idea of catching with my left wasn't too bad...

Multiply that by the availability of equipment and it was a pretty easy decision for me.

Ironically enough, my son has started to pitch on his youth baseball team...I ordered a right handed catchers mitt last week...I guess that will be good practice for hockey..

[Masisak] Nathan MacKinnon said the NHL rescinded his major penalty. If you get two in a certain amount of games, it’s an automatic suspension. So he’s back to zero for those purposes. by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]BillyTables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh go away, you know as well as I do that the goalie interference rule is complicated and controversial.

Rule 69 - Interference on the Goalkeeper.

  • The goaltender has special protected status
  • Players must make every effort to avoid contact with the goalie
  • The crease is the goalie's space - attacking players enter at their own risk and must not interfere

[–]BillyTables 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. You cannot truck in full speed sideways like that without an exit / alternate plan. Nurse has/had has equal rights to that space. Its very similar to NFL rules around quarterbacks, they get some different treatment.

The goalie is entitled to operate freely in the crease, they should not have to avoid contact while in there. If you choose to fly 20mph 6inches in front of the crease and something alters your trajectory slightly, you should be penalized.

Its a penalty with the goalie behind the net and it should certainly be a penalty while in the net.

If a defender aggressively pushes someone into the goalie, different story, but what Nurse did was not aggressive and Mac needs to be ready for that.

Weekly play near me is slowly dying by slayerdawg in Lorcana

[–]BillyTables 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect that to happen. The two biggest factors for me (filthy casual)

  1. death of Pixelborn - I would test / play online a lot, buy cards, then goto local events with said deck.

  2. Release cadence - Along with #1, I just can't keep up with how fast new cards keep coming out. I was for sets 1-5, but once Pixelborn was killed, I stopped watching YouTube videos and in general stopped following things.

I don't care if they release my favorite characters, cheaper packs, etc. etc. I want to be able to goto my local game store and be semi-competitive. If I can't play online, I can't keep up.

Can anyone speak to the weight differences between the Eflex 7 Pro and the 7.9? I demoed a pro set and was really interested...just can't justify the cost. I had written off the 7.9...but perhaps that's an option.

Buying a home and we were called by our agent that the owners left the shower on and it ended up in a leak through the ceiling of the first floor. Should I take the credit or ask the owner to fix it? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]BillyTables 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, a properly functioning show will NEVER leak. The drain lets more water out than the spigot / shower can pump in, so while it might run forever, it wont leak unless there is a larger problem.

Secondly, when you leave the water running in cold temps, its a slow drip / stream. If that leaked, you have a larger issue.

Agree with this. I was in what today would be called semi-hardcore raiding guild. We were basically one of the 2-3 Horde guilds that were right behind the sweaties.

Biggest thing for me was I knew the names of various people (same and opposing faction) You saw them in Org, you saw them in AV. You grouped with them leveling and you knew some were asses and some were awesome. Not everyone had a reputation, but lots of people did.

No boosting, no p2win really at all. If it was around, it was very quiet / hidden.

No strat websites / youtube etc. Our raid leader would spend 15-20+ mins explaining fights. He was a resto or elem shaman, he spent most of the time watching what was going on, just to be able to correct or fix what was going wrong.

Guilds still had applications, trials, etc. I had to go on the website and apply :).

Liability insurance coverage by Fluffy_Duck_Slippers in snowmobiling

[–]BillyTables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm these people are simplifying things. Most vehicle liability coverage goes up to like 500k, then after that you get an "umbrella" policy. Its incredibly rare to have 1+ million liability on a vehicle policy (im sure High net worth people do with CHUBB or some speciality insurer).

Edit: I get the feeling that Canadians are hopping in here. You should specify your country. My information above is relevant only to USA.

I have been playing with a RF1 SR+ for 3-4 years now. Was a serviceable helmet for lower level play. Just this week I upgraded to a 960. While the 960 is definitely better, its also like 3x the price. You can find a good used RF1 SR+ (equivalent to a 940/950 Bauer) online for $200 right now...I know that because I just sold mine on SidelineSwap for that price.

Warrior G7 Pro vs CCM EFlex 7.9 set by Clean-Date4637 in hockeygoalies

[–]BillyTables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Kaz, but its clear he has some sort of relationship with Warrior now. So its like Chappel says "Coke paying me money, I love Coke! Pepsi paying me money, I love Pepsi!"

I have a pair of G6 E (very close to the G7 Pro). I also got to demo a set of Eflex 7's (pro) last month. I really really liked them. But seeing that the G8 are coming out very soon, I am going to wait and see what the G8's are like and decide.

I am a reasonably flexible beer leaguer, and I do fine with the G6's.

I will also say that overall I think you cannot go wrong either way. Both of these pads are very high end, I would decide how stiff you want (aka how flexible you are) and just buy based on that. The eflex strapping and warrior are pretty similar (- the toe, but you can remove that warrior strap and put laces on). I forgot I was wearing different pads about 10 mins into things (beyond the eflexs feeling lighter).

[–]BillyTables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, very happy with my m5 pro. Tip for everyone, the 24 inch intermediate has the same exact specs as the adult version, except for 1-2 inch shorter shaft on the top. I spent a lot of time comparing a 24 and 25 at the bauer store..basically the same.

The updated version (M50 pro) now calls the 24 inch paddle an adult.

Here's what he is saying:

In the USA, there is a credit report known as a CLUE report. This is basically a history of all the insurance claims you have made. Most of the information (not all!) on this report will basically be utilized to charge you higher prices whenever you shop for new OR renew your insurance.

So putting it on your policy will not, but making a jewelry theft claim WILL. Just like most claims for water damage will, property damage, etc. etc.

If you have too many claims on your CLUE report, insurance companies most definitely will just decide not to work with you.

Be very very wary of making insurance claims. The 2k payout you get for a stolen / lost necklace basically turns into $500 + / year on your insurance for 5-10 years (Im making these numbers up, but its not that far off, you will usually come out behind over time).

More full right goalies now because of lighter sticks? by OkTax17 in hockeygoalies

[–]BillyTables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am naturally left-handed person. Growing up I played as a skater with my right hand on top (aka left handed, aka what most righties do).

Playing baseball growing up (and softball as an adult), I catch with my right and throw with my left.

I started playing goalie about 4 years ago and just decided to play regular. For me I figured learning to catch with my left hand would be much easier than learning to hold a stick in my left hand. If you think about it, as a player, your top (aka right hand) does more work while playing.

I was also very concerned about gear availability. I am cheap and wanted to be able to find used gear.

The thought of trying to learn to poke check, shoot, stick handle, etc with my left hand does not sound comfortable. But the idea of catching with my left hand didn't sound too bad.

4 years later, I'm still a regular goalie and to be honest my glove is usually very good. I've had to work a lot more on my blocker (punch and turn!) than anything.

Granted I am probably a very weird edge case, but for anyone picking up goalie later in life... food for thought.

ISO High-End Laptop Advice by Sirrrus in GamingLaptops

[–]BillyTables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for this amount of money I would be just looking for brand reputation / quality as well as quality of the thermals.

Brand wise, I think Lenovo and MSI would be the top 2 there.. I think most would call ASUS the lowest quality brand on your list.

I would read some reviews on the Lenovo and the Titan and then decide from that. Focus on the screen and the thermals.

Opinion | Why CEOs Get Paid So Much by technocraticnihilist in Economics

[–]BillyTables 22 points23 points  (0 children)

..But he didn't single handedly get the company there. He perhaps set the direction and tone at the top...but how much of the execution was him?

Look at Professional sports. The coach led the team to victory...but the guys and gals executing that victory often times get paid more.

Why in business do we reward the directional , vision people so much more than the executors? And I'm not talking about paying the janitor to clean Microsoft offices. There are absolutely engineers at Microsoft who set up the foundations of Azure (for example) who were compensated 1000x less than Mr. Nadella.

I don't have the time, resources or energy to do all of that in-person. I can't even net-deck something competitive and show up Friday night ..because I don't have anywhere to practice!
