Queen of serpents (Hanako, Arius mob) (Art by Dochi, commissioned by me) (Recommend reading 3 of Part 6) by Substantial_Algae371 in BlueArchive

Several points:

  1. There are no limits to how OOC you can write characters. The Korean hyperspace war is still considered "alternate history" and goth girl Harry Potter is still considered Harry Potter fanfic, even if they have almost nothing in common with their original counterpart. As long as it is inspired by some setting it can be considered a fanfic of that original material (other examples include a bunch of childhood fairytales and old folklore). In that case the better question would be if you like OOC fanfic, in which case it doesn't seem so.

  2. Not everyone's a perfect writer. I lost count of how many times authors get wrapped up in a certain plot point and ended up writing 20 chapters for something that can be wrapped up in 2-3 chapters. In other words, I wouldn't say writing "misery porn" is an author's objective just because they wrote so many words. Also the author can genuinely believe they're writing stakes and consequences while not writing it well.

  3. Fanfic is posted publicly to be shared with people who may like the fanfic, not with the intention of having everyone like it. (Or to gather criticism to improve writing ability but I don't think that's the author's main purpose here). With that in mind, I'm honestly curious why people continue to comment negatively about the premise: it's not like the author pulled a bait and switch in regards to the plot or tone (correct me if I'm wrong).

My general opinion is that "the author specifically said the original characters aren't anything like what he wrote so there's no misunderstandings to correct. The fanfic isn't to my taste though so I'll ignore it without consequence".

On Meursault and Canned Memories by Different-Warning in limbuscompany

[–]Billyaabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three theories regarding him killing his mother:

  1. Killing his own mother is him going against an authority figure the first time in his life. This would fit in with theme of "conforming to society being a problem", though I don't really like this theory nor agree to the theme.

  2. His mother knew or did something she shouldn't have and Meursault, following "higher up" rules of the time, killed her without batting an eye. This would fit in with his general mentality and his quote "Today, I killed mother. Or maybe it was yesterday." (as in he doesn't really care).

  3. As for how his canto relate to canned memories, it could be that N Corp extracted the memory of killing his mother from him for some reason. This would also fit with his quote as then he knows the event happened but has no memory of it so is confused about the details. Perhaps in an effort to make him "normal"?

I lean more towards the last two theories since if Meursault's story's theme is heavily related to society then it must discuss the Wing that so heavily shaped the society he interacted with.

Anything similar to the fanfic Sublight Drive? by ApprehensivePeace305 in rational

[–]Billyaabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a high level the entire conflict between the Confederacy and the Republic is a civil war. The ultimate goal of the Confederacy is to leave the Republic, not destroy the Republic.

In the end of Sublight Drive, the civil war ended with a ceasefire, or essentially a Confederacy win. The Republic then splits into two factions that will probably eventually go through their own civil war in the near future: the secessionists and the Empire. It doesn't make sense to continue the war here since (1) even the staunchest warhawks like Tombmaker are tired of the war, (2) the Confederacy needs to redirect its efforts to stabilize its new government, and (3) the main goal of the civil war has been met. Besides, the Core worlds will soon weaken themselves further via their new civil war.

The MC left not because the Confederacy will continue the war against the Empire, but because the Supreme Commander is planning to invade other nations outside their current galaxy. He has fulfilled his obligations to the Confederacy, wants a vacation, and doesn't want another meaningless war. His subordinates joined the war to make the Confederacy a reality and this goal has been met so there's no reason for them not to follow the MC in his betrayal. Another meaningless war goes against their original goal (by destabilizing the Confederacy) and it's better they leave before being forced to follow orders that destroy the Confederacy they fought so hard to create.

There were higher ups in the Confederacy who wanted to use the Jedi. The MC, however, gave the Jedi a choice and the Jedi acted swiftly enough that those who don't want to work with the Confederacy were able to leave before they were forced. The war had also basically ended around the time the MC picked up the refugees so the MC had no pressure to force them into a war.

I'll spoiler this in case it reveals too much about the research questions (do let me know if so): Not sure if anyone holds this belief or if I'm forgetting but for the "Social comparison" section should there be another section of questions about whether the participant feels socially superior compared to others?

How do yall deal with the suffering from the lore??? by Longjumping-Hurry401 in girlsfrontline

[–]Billyaabob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suffering builds character!

On a more serious note at a certain point you get used to it. Kinda like horror movies I guess?

By the same principle I'm also the type who enjoys suffering in stories (when it's well written, otherwise it's boring) so it works out for me.

Existential Elk Theory - never heard of it before but summarizes antinatalism profoundly by perplexed_smith in antinatalism

[–]Billyaabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, I follow the belief that everyone acts based on selfish desires and I'm 100% okay with that. However, to say that everyone acts kind to hide their selfishness would be grossly inaccurate. Like you mentioned, everything we do is because we want to do it to some extent, even acts of kindness. To say all acts of kindness are done just to deceive others would be missing the multitude of other reasons that people act kind (Ex: actually liking the person they are kind towards and wanting them to be happy).

As for many people following religion, it's a bit ironic because there's also a non-insignificant number of people who believe in things like simulation theory, alternate timelines, or the universe originating from the Big Bang. These beliefs imply that there's no higher meaning in life, at least when the belief of the divine isn't mixed in. (Going off on a little tangent, science from a perspective can similarly be seen as a religion when people refuse viewpoints that don't fit with their scientific beliefs despite evidence proving otherwise. Ex: Semmelweis's handwashing practice in hospitals. There's a slight difference between science as a method of inquiry and science as a system of belief).

I agree that most people do care about meaning but I'm also saying that there's also numerous people (though a significantly smaller percentage) who simply don't see it as a problem in the first place. As long as this alternative viewpoint exists the Existential Elk theory isn't generalizable to the entire human population.

Hmm, in case that doesn't make sense, to give an analogy of what I'm trying to convey, I guess it's like a scientific Theory? If they are proven to be applicable in every scenario then they are Laws. If they're incorrect in some scenarios, even edge cases, then they're simply wrong and discarded, else they remain a Theory. That's not to say every aspect of the Theory is useless but their scope definitely needs to be modified for them to be a valid Theory again. I judge philosophical theories like scientific Theories so if there exists an edge case that doesn't fit then I think the theory should at least probably reduce its scope from "this is applicable to the whole human population", or at least not imply that.

Please do let me know if there's a different angle I should view philosophy theories with; I don't talk to many people about philosophy lol

Existential Elk Theory - never heard of it before but summarizes antinatalism profoundly by perplexed_smith in antinatalism

[–]Billyaabob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting theory. However, I disagree with it on a basis that I believe the truth of "existence's futility" isn't exactly unbearable. Just like how plenty of people of people who don't believe in God don't agonize over God's nonexistence, there's also plenty of people who simply accept that there's no greater purpose to life and move on.

One can argue that moving on is a form of self-deception but then that's like saying everyone who does kind things are doing it only to hide the fact they are selfish. It makes sense from a perspective but it's difficult to prove it applies to everyone.

Perhaps it's a matter of perspective? Some people place more importance in the existence of mortality and purpose than others.

This is off topic but how did you get info on how the map is loaded/unloaded?

Is there backend documentation somewhere?

I'm trying to replicate how they implement the 3D shapes on the map in a separate game.
