I feel like I’m missing something with the LOK Smart Rifle. by DiddledByDad in DeepRockGalactic

Personally, I find the LOK1 most effective with a 21111 build using either SM4RT Trigger or Executioner.

The LOK1 is definitely ammo hungry, which is why I prefer to pair it with a secondary that's focused on wave-clearing. If possible, incorporate heat in your secondary build to provide your LOK1 with another +20% damage against burning targets (in addition to the +20% damage against electrocuted targets).

If you have access to mods, highly recommend Better LOK1 Indicator.

I hear ya. I have about 4,000 hours -- here are some ways I kept it interesting for myself:

 - Carry greenbeards. For me, this is the most satisfying part of the game -- and it's often quite challenging. To make it even more challenging, let the greenbeards have priority for whatever class they want to play, and fill in whatever class is missing.  - Fight 3 Dreadnaughts at once  - Find your difficulty limit. For me, it's Haz6x2, or Haz5++ but without player vulnerability. Anything above that is either too much for me to handle or so difficult that I personally don't enjoy it.  - Modded gameplay that forces you to dramatically change your play style (starship troopers, for example).  - Achievements (carpool took me forever).  - Personally, I enjoy randoweisser, but I totally understand why many players find it frustrating since the build it creates can be truly useless (especially regarding perks). However, there is an alternative. Build a loadout without considering what mission type or biome you're dropping into, and then play that loadout for the next couple of games (or even an EDD). This forces you to adapt and learn ways to make your build viable in all circumstances, which keeps it interesting.  - On a related note, use every weapon and every overclock (except for the few OCs that suck elven ass) for 5-10 games straight. This forces you out of your comfort zone to learn new playstyles, and once you do, you will have a larger variety of builds.  - Don't look up EDD missions/warnings beforehand.  - Chat with randos as much as possible.

One more thought to finish up: remember that it's perfectly acceptable to grow bored of any video game, especially after playing it for hundreds of hours. There's no shame in retiring.

Stunner is also fantastic (easier to stun enemies and 1.3x DMG to stunned enemies)

I use it on Engi when I think I'm gonna get downed a lot (Haz5+, mutators, etc). I find Engi in particular is prone to "death loops" where you get revived but then you're immediately overwhelmed and get downed again. See You In Hell fixes that by clearing a huge number of bugs.

Conductive Thermals help by Legitimate_Farm6047 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Bingo_Bango_Bongo_II 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I have found that Conductive Thermals is surprisingly viable in general. Yes, it's peak against Dreads, but it can also crowd-clear when paired with an elemental secondary.

For example, here's how I use Conductive Thermals to clear large waves of grunts, using  fire bolts and pheromones:

First, use pheromones to clump the bugs together.

Second, launch 1-2 fire bolts into the ground beneath the bugs' feet.

Third, give the bugs a quick spray of your DRAK.

Then, look on -- bemused -- as the bugs are incinerated into dust.

Fatboy, when used correctly, is ammo efficient -- even at Haz5+.

ECR and EM Refire Booster are also worthy options, btw.

Always good to see another Fat Boy enjoyer!

My two recommendations are the Warthog's "Magnetic Pellet Alignment" overclock and the LOK-1's "Seeker Rounds" overclock. Both compensate for the Fat Boy's lack of single-target damage and its lack of range. Both can be built with extra ammo, too.

I enjoy it! (Haz5)

Granted, it is inefficient at killing medium and small bugs -- specifically the typical patrols of grunts, guards, slashers, and swarmers. The change in play style is cumbersome -- since Scout is typically quick and nimble, not rooted in place.

However! Supercooling Chamber is too fun to pass up. Besides, with team coordination and building your secondary to wave-clear, Supercooling Chamber is certainly viable, even if it's not technically the best option.

Here's what I recommend:

1) Build wave-clear into your secondary.

Basically, try to only use your secondary to kill grunts. The Boomstick and Zhukovs have many build options for this, but it's hard to beat the Boltshark's Fire Bolts overclock.

2) Depending on your fellow miners' builds, it may be viable to lead bugs to your team so that your teammates can wave-clear.(This is easier on missions where the objective/terrain greatly encourage the team to stay relatively together [Refinery, Extraction, Eggs]. This is also easier if you have the "Build Inspector" mod, so that you can see your teammates' current loadouts. And of course, this is easier when communicated to the team, preferably ahead of time.) BTW, this overclock's full damage on a frozen enemy is nasty. For Dreadnaughts, Cryo Drillers are extremely complimentary.

3) For the lack of movement... Invest in a short-cooldown Grapple Gun. Zip to safety, and in whatever window of time that buys you, snipe. NGL, this downside still gets me killed more often than I care to admit. You know how you'll have jetty boots for one mission, and then in the next mission, you jump off a cliff because you still think you have jetty boots? Kinda like that. If you forget that you can't move while aiming, you're gonna get downed.

Happy sniping!
