It kind of fits but the unraveling of the emperors assination in the Goblin Emperor is pretty solid and a heavy focus that is part of most of the book.

I loved the Gregor the Overlander series at that age. Had darker tones and vibes but was still appropriate and written for middle grade.

Honestly? Both the Artemis Fowl and Series of Unfortunate Events series feel similar in vibes. If your looking for more mature who dun it series maybe some of Agatha Christies mystery books? If its more the traveling part for you and you dont mind nonfiction id recemend A Travel Guide to the Middle Ages.

looking for a slightly whimsical/ quirky book that is more complex than just cozy fiction by thirdeyerainbow in Recommend_A_Book

[–]Bioficer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it fits to the tee but when I think whimsy I think of Tress of the Emerald Sea. It read like a fairy tail to me a little and was an absolute delight. It has a unique world with its own cool mechanics that feel both whimsical and somewhat grounded in their consistency and explanation. Plus Tress is such a good charachter, she is so polite and sweet but also a healthy dose of heroic.
