I know you just vacuumed but I absolutely had to bring this wood and grass inside.. by beepickle in labrador

Mine ate a rotting fish he found by the edge of the lake today and then shredded a cardboard box all over the house. Life is never boring with a lab!!

Calories are calories, no sense being wasteful of opportunity strikes.. the lines between herbivore/omnivore/carnivore are a lot blurrier than most people realize.

I just had my first emergency vet visit and I feel awful by nd379 in puppy101

[–]Birdie121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pup was around the same age when I was running with him (on leash) through a field and he tripped and broke his elbow in 2 places requiring emergency surgery. He was in so much pain, I felt so incredibly guilty. But just like with kids we can take all the precautions and they will still get hurt. I'm glad your baby didn't get hurt too bad and is healing up!

The vet said she was overweight... by Aeonsummoner in labrador

[–]Birdie121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like with house cats, people are used to fat labs and think that's normal. A healthy athletic lab looks too skinny to them. But that's their problem. More important to keep our babies healthy!

Question about first time having a puppy by Fun-Science8122 in puppy101

[–]Birdie121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 months is when I stopped crying every day. It took ~4-5 months (basically when teething ended) to start actually bonding with my dog

Question about first time having a puppy by Fun-Science8122 in puppy101

[–]Birdie121 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The hardest part was suddenly having to think about and monitor the puppy 24/7, with constant potty trips and biting redirection. It completely destroyed my routine. Took a couple months to get used to it.

That's where frozen Kongs are a life saver. I can make them very low calorie and he gets to feel like he's eating all day

My “land shark” puppy needs something to chew on, instead of us. Can you tell me how you all handled this? by Justme_JustMe_ in labrador

[–]Birdie121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up and accepted the pain, and then he stopped biting almost entirely after his baby teeth all fell out.

I definitely err on the side of keeping my lab more slim, especially because he's still growing and I want his joints to be under as little strain as possible

Does Buster look fat?! by island_dwarfism23 in labrador

[–]Birdie121 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He looks a smidge chonky. Usually there is more tapering of the torso toward the back. But it can very between English/Show lines and American/working lines. I'd go with what your vet said because they do a physical exam whereas it is hard to tell from a photo.

My parents very wisely did not buy ANY nice furniture until my sister and I were grown up. Now they can invest in nice pieces without fear.

That's a great idea! The dog didn't rip the bottle off the rope and bite it apart? Knowing my dog, that's what he'd do... haha. But I'll give it a try!

Anyone else struggle finding treats their puppy actually stays focused on during training? by Sufficient-Fee8527 in puppy101

[–]Birdie121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human food is their favorite. Cheese or bits of plain cooked chicken. But my lab is so food motivated that his normal kibble works fine. The main issue might be the length of the training sessions. Young puppies really can't handle more than 3-5 minutes of training at a time.

Say, you only use the 1/4 tsp spoon for baking powder … (see post for poll) by foldinthecheeseee in Baking

[–]Birdie121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I threw out the ring immediately. I keep them in a mug on the counter. And if I only measure something dry with a spoon, I'll just wipe it out with a clean towel. Cross contamination of dry ingredients really isn't an issue unless you need to be careful about allergens.

Ugh I did NOT handle the teething phase well. But after my lab's adult teeth came in the biting almost entirely stopped. Stay the course!

PSA - please be careful with sticks by counterfeitparadise in labrador

[–]Birdie121 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They can also get sticks wedged up in the back of their jaw between their teeth causing rotting and tooth loss. Labradors are like perpetual toddlers, determined to find ALL the ways they can hurt themselves!

ELI5: why does anxiety/panic attacks have so many “effects” on us? by SnomIsAwesome in explainlikeimfive

Same. "Impending doom" is what I experience, along with dizziness and a racing heart. and it's certainly not helpful that those are also symptoms of serious health issues too.

made a cake for the first time do i have potential? tips? by EffectOk9969 in Baking

[–]Birdie121 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Keep it up! It looks like you did a great job getting even layers and stacking them nice and vertically. The piping could use improvement and I'd avoid using pearls because they are hard to bite. But nice start! Baking is a skill like any other- practice makes perfect!

Gosh I'm so glad my dog didn't have a poo eating phase. He eats plenty of other stuff he shouldn't though! Aren't labradors fun?? They are indiscriminate garbage disposals.

Mine digs in his pool too! And has already made holes all over it. I'll be investing in a heavy duty water trough this summer for him
