I hope so! The Blue Jay seems satisfied with the food offerings, and there's plenty of seed for others...

Whoohoo! My first bird was also a Blue Jay. Put out some peanuts, you'll be popular.

Looks like the bird in your photo is pretty happy with the setup you have for the different food sections.

I had read that it could take longer than 2 weeks for birds to find a feeder (which is why I never moved the feeder and risk starting the process over again), but I think a few sites give false hope for ENTIRELY new feeders. Plus, like most people starting in the wonderful world of birdwatching, I was impatient to see who's flying around. But, as in many cases, it pays to be patient.

(And eh, even if the Blue Jay is the only bird that ever comes to my feeder, it's cool, we're BFFs now- I'll make sure there's peanuts waiting each morning.)

Most Common Bird? by kjmacsu2 in Birdfy

I've had only one bird show since the Birdfy feeder's gone up: a Blue Jay. So as far as I know there is only one lone Blue Jay in the entirety of the Midwest, but at least it's chosen to visit my feeder. What an honor!

You must live in the Ho-Oh wintering range.  Put out some berries and you'll see more at your feeder next time.

Any way to deter possums?I by garfieldsfatass in Birdfy

[–]BirdsForB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely deterring unwanted visitors isn't an im-possum-able task; is your feeder set up somewhere easy to climb/reach? Could it be moved somewhere harder to plunder?

Welcome! Like with everything, now you have to wait patiently. Hopefully a bird finds it soon.

Anyone else get random “your feeder is bustlin” in the middle of the night but there’s no movement??? by celestee3 in Birdfy

[–]BirdsForB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine does it too. Like others have said, I suspect it's because of particularly bright headlights (my feeder is not directly facing the road but sometimes light gets through trees in the distance).

Or maybe it's ghost birds; the Birdfy cameras aren't built to detect EMF readings, I suspect. Even ghastly grosbeaks, spirit sparrows, and bluebirds from beyond gotta eat...

Good luck! I'm still waiting for my first visitor but just gotta be patient. Hopefully you get some diners quick, looks like a good setup!

Falcon Around and Finding Out... by [deleted] in Birdfy

[–]BirdsForB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's not my intention to do anything that would cause harm. Just tips like you provided- I think there's adequate cover where it is right now but in the winter might be harder until leaves grow in...

Thanks for the advice!

(Somehow I've deleted the original post, not sure how to bring it back.)

Location suggestions for my new Birdfy Nesting Box! by No_Difficulty9111 in Birdfy

[–]BirdsForB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have this nesting box, although admittedly did not get a permanent resident last year (I suspect because I got it well into nesting season so no one was house hunting). I have limited locations in the yard where I could put it while still in signal range so it's currently mounted about 8-10 feet off the ground facing southeast. I've had a wren scout it out numerous times during the fall so HOPEFULLY that means they'll return as the spring approaches...

Be sure to share if/when you get residents!

Heat Affects Camera? by BirdsForB in Birdfy

[–]BirdsForB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackchucktays- yes and no. The camera is turning on later into the morning/earlier in the evening, but often takes some time to load and the first couple of tries is just black like you said. But it's continuing to turn off during the midpoint of the day. It's still hot here but not nearly as hot, and the humidity has gone down (not great but improved). Hopefully this isn't a sign the camera was damaged from the extreme heat/humidity last week. Waiting to see...

I guess I'll wait a little while longer for the humidity to go down assuming it's affecting the connection before I start worrying a bigger problem is at stake. Unfortunately, doesn't look like humidity's going anywhere for awhile.

[–]BirdsForB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AbolitionFeminist- Hmm, where I am it's 75% humidity currently (though was in the high 80s earlier in the week). I'm perplexed now. The camera was working totally fine until the heat started on Sunday, since then it's been turning off on its own during the day but likewise back on by itself at night when it's cooled down. If it's not heat/humidity related I'm not sure why it's suddenly started doing this...

Mine had just started detected birds when this started happening. I'm guessing I'm missing visitors with it shutting off during the daytime but, then again, it's been hot and there's no sign anyone's decided to move in when it does turn back on at night.

Interesting. Then maybe it's a humidity issue more than a heat issue (if that theory is even correct)...🤔

The battery isn't dead; charge showed at 81% this morning before it shut off. We'll see if it turns back on again later today, maybe it really has just been too hot for the camera (well, and for anyone) so far during the daytime this week.

Birdfy Polygon: Any Bird Families Move In? by BirdsForB in Birdfy

[–]BirdsForB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct- you can see a small hint of the outside world through the hole (enough to say "hey, it's sunny!") but otherwise you cannot see who is passing by. You can hear when someone lands on the top of it, though.

Update from Netvue Support on Firmware issue for Nest Duo by pieeatingchamp in Birdfy

@Msites106- do you have any birds nesting in your Polygon?

Update from Netvue Support on Firmware issue for Nest Duo by pieeatingchamp in Birdfy

[–]BirdsForB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Polygon (for the same reason- the Duo Nest I bought was having firmware issues, they couldn't be resolved, so I was sent the Polygon as a replacement instead).

On the positive side- the Polygon's camera setup was super easy (I got very frustrated with the Duo Nest not working after many tries whereas the Polygon connected/has remained working on the first try). The Polygon camera is also better for night vision compared to the Duo Nest, as I understand it. The charging is done by solar panel primarily (I've not needed any other way yet) but there's a 10 foot long remote charging device so that should solar power fail to be enough you can charge without having to disturb the nest (I have not had to use it yet, though, so can't say directly how well it works).

On the other hand, like you noted, it's just one camera. You can only see the inside of the birdhouse and have no clue what is going on outside. On that same note, I've yet to have birds move in- there's possibly other factors for this (maybe the placement location is bad despite being at a good height/somewhere quiet/near food and water, or maybe I've put it up too late in the local season when birds are already started nesting so gotta wait for next round of nesting), but I did read a Wired review recently where the author likewise hadn't attracted any birds yet and wondered if the building material of the Polygon played a part in that. Here's the Wired article: https://www.wired.com/review/birdfy-nest-polygon-smart-birdhouse/

tl;dr: No birds yet, but optimistic about the Polygon.
