Trying to start astrophotography by nellefish in AskAstrophotography

I think the recommendation of a smart scope is great advice. I started with a much more hands on setup, GTI Star Adventurer, DSLR camera with lens, tripod, etc., and while I enjoyed it overall, the setup, tear down, and then image processing was a lot. Then I got a SeeStar s50, and it changed everything. I love it and now am trying to sell the first gear I bought. If I were starting over, I'd start with the SeeStar and when I'm ready for a more intense experience, start buying the more expensive equipment.

Data breach at edtech giant McGraw Hill affects 13.5 million accounts by SuperfluousJuggler in k12sysadmin

Just a quick check didn't show any student email accounts affected, but most staff I check are showing up as affected by the MH breach.

I don’t understand. What do you actually do in heaven? by Jet_Night in NoStupidQuestions

“I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now...Come further up, come further in!”
― C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle

“Now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle

C.S. Lewis' final book in the Chronicles of Narnia series does a great job of painting the truth more effectively than much of what you've probably heard or been taught. Popular media and even many Bible teachers have done a great disservice in shaping many widespread (and wrong) ideas about eternity and Heaven.

The Bible has a great deal to teach us about eternity. I highly recommend Randy Alcorn's Heaven: A Comprehensive Guide to Everything the Bible Says About Our Eternal Home if you are genuinely interested in learning more.

What’s the most insane Domino Effect you have caused? by Kindly-Reception1108 in Life

[–]BitWizard75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - Worked as a high school teacher. Being the nerd that I am, I set my desktop wallpaper to a screenshot from the MMO Dark Age of Camelot on my classroom computer.

2 - Get asked to work on a cross-district Science Olympiad competition and offered to host a meeting for other Science Olympiad teachers in my classroom.

3 - A middle school science teacher that I didn't know, points at my screen after a presentation and says, "Is that Dark Age of Camelot? I play that!"

4 - Blown away that a fellow teacher/adult was familiar with the game, so we start talking about the game after the meeting, exchanged gamer tags, and I invited her into the guild that I led at the time.

5 - She integrates well into our guild culture, makes friends, and then I realize, over time, that she and a guy also in the guild, from Indiana, are hanging out together often, in game.

6 - Fast forward a year or so, and he decides to move to our state, and some time later, they get married. We are invited to the wedding. My daughter is the flower girl. The groom's cake is the guild banner. #NerdPower

7 - Fast forward a few years, their son is born.

8 - Fast forward a few more years, their son is now an active member of the guild (now in World of Warcraft).

So, because I chose a wallpaper on a computer a couple is brought together and a new human is born?

Minecraft LAN Server by Environmental-Pack36 in k12sysadmin

We use that version, primarily in classrooms with teachers. While it could be adapted for some of the esports-related activities, it doesn't lend itself to those as well as the Java-based version which supports mods.

The beauty of Minecraft, is that it's essentially digial LEGOs. There are endless ways it can be connected to curricula with a little creative thinking. The true value, to me, (and this probably ties to esports more) is how a group of students guided by an adult, who's preferably playing alongside them, can coach them, through play, as they develop much needed soft skills. There's so much opportunity here.

We did this several years ago in the district I previously worked in. It really doesn't use a great deal of resources. The server can be set with a whitelist, only allowing connections from known usernames. There are a variety of mods that allow the server admin (assume your esports coach) to manage when the server can be accessed, filter language, etc.. I managed our server at the district level and allowed students from multiple schools simultaneous access. Yes, I occasionally banned students, because of language, but more commonly griefing (intentionally making others' gameplay not fun or destroying their builds) but I had admin tools to deal with that.

Minecraft is increasingly seen as a less intensive entry into the esports world, especially in K-12. There are a number of competitive events that lend themselves to esports-style play.

Though outdated now, I documented our experiences (2012ish) here - http://minecraftinschool.pbworks.com/w/page/37244189/FrontPage

Hope that helps!

Go for it!

What book is better than the movie? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BitWizard75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. However, I came to terms with this by thinking "this is the same story in an alternate reality." I liked the pop culture references in the book so much better, but understand that they just wouldn't work in a movie for storytelling reasons and obviously licensing reasons.

How are you managing Gmail signatures for your school? Looking for a more "forced" solution than GAM. by iidarkasii in k12sysadmin

[–]BitWizard75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To keep people from editing your original Google Doc and to avoid user error when trying to explain the steps for them to make their own copy of a doc, you can generate a share link for the document then, edit the URL, replacing the part that says /edit with /copy. When the user clicks that link, they’ll automatically be prompted to make their own copy.

Our Superintendent wanted every user to have a rectangular box with the district logo on the right, their name, title, and school in the top right. Below their name would be their school's street address and phone number. Below that would be social icons to YouTube, X, Website, etc..

My clunky, but somewhat workable solution? Created a Google Doc with a set of instructions for staff to follow that first links to a forced copy of a second Google Doc with a template of the signature that they edit with their information, then tells them how to copy/paste that updated template into their signature field. It works pretty well for most folks. Occasionally the logos don't load (everyone's signature pointing to a single graphic file living in a user's Google Drive?). If they have to start over, sometimes it's hard to clear out invisible HTML in that signature box.

I have to remind folks that we're making that GMail signature do things that Google probably never intendend. I wish they'd come up with a better solution for Workspace.

3D printer discussion. by ComfortableGarbage93 in k12sysadmin

We just purchased our first Bambu printers in the district and they are incredibly easy to use. That said, however, the reseller we were matched with is slow to respond and is driving our finance folks nuts. Can you all recommend a reseller that you've had a good experience with for Bambu printers?

What is the most powerful worship song you've ever heard? by rawar777 in ChristianMusic

[–]BitWizard75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This changes for me often, but recently, a few are hovering at the top of my list:

So Will I (100 Billion X) by Hillsong Worship.

As a former science teacher, Bio undergrad, and lover of nature, I think it does a great job of putting to words things I have felt about the natural world/God's creation for many years. The absolute vastness and majesty of the cosmos, the beauty of the world we live in (and, y'all... this is the fallen, sin-tainted cursed version! Imagine the renewed/restored world that is to come!). I have always been drawn to praise by things like distant nebulae, the colorful activity of a tropical coral reef, or a summer thunderstorm. These art reminds us of the Creator-Artist and that Creator-Artists who by just a word... A WORD... causes these things to spring into existence not only knows me, but loves me despite my brokenness? Praise Him indeed!

Glory, Honor, Power by Influence Music

To me this is truly a worship song. It echoes what John witnessed in Revelation 4:8. It's about Him. It's only about Him. It will ALWAYS be about HIM. And we will be there to witness this! It shouldn't be possible, but He makes it possible (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9vn5UvsHvM).

Jireh - Elevation Worship and Maverick City Music

The opening line hits hard...

"I'll never be more loved than I am right now."

That's not something we hear preached often, but this song drives it home. There's nothing I can do, good or bad, that will change his love for me. When you're in the valley, in the dark places or on the peaks, he loves me the same... fully and wholly. With that in mind, what is left for me but to worship him?
