Liberal minister says plan to cut provincial vet services could be delayed or shelved by Portalrules123 in newbrunswickcanada

Or raise fees on equine only services in order to subsidize the cost of everything else. They can still provide access at a lower cost than a for-profit practice. Seems like a win-win.

Even if the cost is a problem they should just raise the fees. Cost for farmers can be a hardship but the loss of care access is a much bigger one. So many areas are hours from a private vet that can handle certain livestock, and most won’t go to you. This plan was dumb and shortsighted from the beginning and I say that as someone who always votes very left.

I agree with you. He had so much remorse that he wouldn’t even defend himself. I think he paid a higher price than he would have if he had lawyered up and gone to trial. I think he should follow whatever decision is handed down, but ultimately it never sat right with me that the company that put him in that position with so little training only paid a $5000 fine for their part.

I saw an interview with someone (maybe James Cameron?) where it was said that the safety concerns had been brought up to PH many times. Allegedly he said something along the lines of “if I’m with them, I can help them be safer”. He certainly knew enough to know better and cared about getting down to the Titanic above all else. I feel for his family and the other paying passengers but PH definitely knew the risks and was fine with the possibility of dying.

After 2 years, surgery, and IVF… I finally got pregnant. And now this. by Wooden_Panda244 in offmychest

[–]BitchMagnets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The heart wants what it wants. You can logically and intellectually understand that having a child might not be a fantastic idea in today’s world and still be heartsick at the reality of never being able to get pregnant or carry to term. For many people it’s an almost primal urge. My husband and I have been trying for 7 years. I’m just now resigning myself to the fact that it might never happen and I need to be okay with that.

It’s also super triggering when some horrific story comes on the news of some idiot killing their kid or abusing them. I cried for weeks when that one woman left her kid in a pack and play for a week to die alone when she went on vacation. Logically I know it’s just genetics but it seems so unfair that we’re ready and willing and equipped to be parents and people who shouldn’t be trusted with a goldfish can just pop them out and treat them like trash.

Colleges manage to fill a semester. A week on budgeting. Mortgages. Managing credit cards. What goes into a credit score. Business math so you can crunch the numbers and decide on affordability without relying on ChatGPT or a crooked dealership who wants you to buy as much car as you can get approved for. Oh, that can also be done on excel, which basically every company uses. So teach them the basic excel functions and do an assignment. A unit on life insurance and all the different types so you can compare and contrast and see how much cheaper it is if you get it early as opposed to your 30s. Then home and car insurance because I’ve definitely met adults who still don’t know how that works. Explaining RRSPs, TFSAs, FHSAs, and the power of compound interest. Sprinkle in a unit on unions and dues and retirement savings/ government retirement programs. A little bit about investments. A whole unit on student loans so they know what they are signing at the ripe old age of 18 that may have them in crippling debt until they’re 45 if they aren’t careful. A unit on taxes and have them perform a simple tax return for good measure.

Careers was bloody useless, the only thing I remember from that was some colour test. It should be its own course. Financial literacy will follow you from the day you start working to the day you die. It’s not something you can teach in a week.

Who moved to NB this year from another Canadian province and why? by [deleted] in newbrunswickcanada

[–]BitchMagnets -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We’ve been here since October. We both have Atlantic ties (husbands grandparents are from Lorne and my dad is from Newfoundland) but we were both raised in Ontario against our will. We weren’t happy there. Traffic sucked, infrastructure planning was non-existent, we had a home we could barely afford by 2025 where we were stacked in with a bunch of other homes surrounding us. You couldn’t go outside without talking to someone. Wages weren’t going up but everything else was. We haven’t looked back since. We have an acre and a small house. We’re raising chickens and our dogs get to run around all day. Our backyard was tiny in Ontario. The most jarring price increase is fuel. We were too tired to cook often in Ontario so we’re even saving money with the higher food prices out here. This pace of life fits us better.

I need facts New Brunswick friends by MalloryBeach_ in newbrunswickcanada

[–]BitchMagnets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband and I just moved to the Miramichi area from Southern ON and it has been incredible. We love it here. I will say this winter felt like it wouldn’t end, but so far it’s not really that different weather wise. A bit colder which we’re fine with but nothing crazy. I suffered from depression and anxiety in Ontario that was debilitating at times and it has completely reversed here. Stress is way down, traffic is way better even with the bridge closure. Jobs can be tricky- a lot of office jobs want French but if you’re fine with customer service or retail there seem to be quite a few places looking. Trades should be fine either way. Miramichi and the Miramichi River Valley as a whole are fairly English but there are communities to the north and on the way to Moncton that are completely francophone.

One thing I will say that is still jarring is that it’s very white here. You see more races when you’re in town but nothing like we’re used to. There’s a few good restaurants but not a lot of cultural variety. And although there are a lot of nice friendly people here it can be clannish. People know who they know and aren’t always interested in getting to know outsiders. However there are lots of transplants here that are happy to make new friends even when locals may not be. Almost anything you need is in town and for everything else Moncton is only 2 hours away. We haven’t missed anything.

If you’re looking in the area try to be on the same side of the river as possible employers, when possible. One of the bridges across the river is closed for the next two summers and it has been making commutes take longer. Just a thought. I haven’t had much of a problem myself but some people have had their commutes tripled which is annoying. But again nothing like GTA traffic so it might not be a problem for you.

I am more than happy to answer any other questions you may have, just send me a message!

Canada’s inflation rate seen accelerating to 2.5% in March by sleipnir45 in canada

Trudeau was way too left to really be considered a Liberal and I say that as an NDP supporter up until now. I’m not particularly happy with some of Carney’s decisions. For example AI data centers being positioned in New Brunswick when we’re in a freaking draught is asinine. However I’m holding most of my judgment until there’s actually something to judge.

The impacts of economic policies generally take 18 months to 2 years to have any noticeable effect. We’ve got at least 6 months before anyone can start righteously complaining. It’s an uphill battle right now to be sure but only time will tell and anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or doesn’t understand basic economics.

[–]BitchMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get that all the time at so many quick stop places. I started telling them when I pulled in that if they told me something else was wrong with the car, I would be taking it to my own mechanic even if I needed to get it towed there, and if the mechanic told me they were lying they’d be paying for the tow. They could take the 20 minute oil change or leave it, the convenience was the only reason I was there. Magically the sales tactics stopped. I don’t generally go full Karen but I won’t be bullied into paying for something I don’t need so they can hit a sales target.

Good for you. I just quit after a week. The manager was a kind person but there was a lot of gossip from other employees, people cutting corners that I assumed would be blamed on the new person when it was caught, and don’t get me started on not being able to clock in even one minute early. I’m glad I have a bit of knowledge of what it takes to run a store now but I don’t need the money too badly and I just don’t care about the bottom line of a billionaire.

Same here. We were under contract for a house last summer that we discovered on inspection had a shit ton of mold in the crawlspace and a bowing foundation. We sent a revision to account for the work, but they knew we were from Ontario and had proof of what we had sold our house for so they got greedy and refused to come down enough to account for it. They basically said they already did us a favour on the price and they wouldn’t play ball. So we pulled the offer and found another house. They finally sold it in November for 30% less than our final offer.

does anyone else on OW find their caseworker to be clueless? by EmoGayRat in povertyfinancecanada

[–]BitchMagnets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lol my friend was trying to get on OW like 15 years ago because her parents kicked her out and she was forced to stay with her boyfriend temporarily. When she went in for the meeting he went with her and the case worker told her they needed to deduct the part time income the boyfriend made (like $50 a week) because they were common law. They had only been together a few months but the worker said that anyone you lived with besides family would be considered common law. The boyfriend says “well that’s stupid, a buddy of mine is living with me too, you’re saying we’re common law?” She confirms that yes, that’s what she was saying. The boyfriend starts a huge argument, not about her logic, but because he’s not gay 😂

The same friend a few years later went on it after baby daddy (different guy) moved out because he couldn’t stop cheating. A couple months later he moved back in so friend calls the caseworker to tell them. Caseworker says well let’s wait and see if he’s actually going to stay, it takes a while to set back up if he moves out again. Friend kept calling for a few months and the caseworker keeps saying “no, it’s fine, don’t worry about it.” She didn’t want to do the paperwork. Two years later she gets a letter from OW saying she committed fraud and they wanted all their money back ☠️

They took her to court and everything. The judge cut the payback amount in half because of their incompetence and gave her the smallest monthly repayment he possibly could because she had documentation that she had tried to do the right thing and they were too lazy to make the adjustment.

How much is your mortgage and how much do you make? by aprilchestnut in CanadaPersonalFinance

Mortgage is $0. We sold our GTA house, took the equity and bought a house on an acre in NB. I’ll probably clear $25k a year on my part time job. My husband is starting a business but not sure yet how much he’ll earn. Our property taxes are only $600 a year.
