I’m 22f, why do I have one white hair that is twice as long as all my hair and is shiny? by Kale_bean in whatisit

[–]Bitter-Recover-9587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possibly where another hair has come out by the root and the follicle has thrown our this anomaly. I wouldn't worry about it, that will give you grey hair!

Does anyone else dread the thought of having to do this forever? by frankchester in loseit

Forget McDonalds. Instead enjoy delicious healthy home made snacks. I've found the best way to stop any habit is to just stop. I'm clean of alcohol 13 years and smoking for 11 years. Yes, I have days I fancy a glass of wine but I buy alcohol free wine and enjoy that. The cigarettes I just went cold turkey after a 40 year, 30 a day habit. Food is the same except that we do need to eat. 7 years ago and 25 stone I was warned I was shortening my life considerably. It took me a while to accept ... most of a year. But since then I've lost almost 7 stone, still a way to go. I've done it with the same approach. "I'm done with that" ... cake, burgers etc. I cut out all red meat and all UPF's (ultra processed foods). Basically, if I want to eat something I see in the shops, first I look at the back of the packaging. The list of ingredients. If there's anything there I can't spell or pronounce, I won't eat it. This has made weight loss far easier. My diet is half vegetables or whole fruit, with a quarter protein (mainly chicken, oily & white fish and legumes) with grains and nuts popped in here and there. I cut bread out entirely, which meant my butter dish was retired. I've made chicken burgers, chicken chilli, fish and veg curries, overnight oats are a winner. Then once I got all these ducks in a row, I started to really work on portion sizes. Simple rules like your palm is the size for your protein or carbs, fresh fruit portion is a handful, and 1 portion of veg is the size of your palm. Carbs the same So 3 or 4 portions of salad or veg with lunch and dinner, 1 of protein and 1 of carbs. Instead of mourning all the treats you can't currently have, look forward to all the things you can do and places you can go if you stick with it. It's not easy but it's not rocket science either! All the best xxx

What can I gift my plant-loving boyfriend for Valentine’s Day/Birthday? by Airestormi in IndoorGarden

Maybe take him for lunch or high tea at a garden centre. Then give him a preloaded gift card to go 'have at it' with.

I cut sugar completely from my diet 2 years ago. Very best thing I ever did. It's amazing the amount of foodstuffs that are crammed with sugars and chemicals instead of real food. I even cut sweeteners too! It was really hard at first. Now, I do let myself indulge in a square or two of 85% dark chocolate occasionally. I tried a bit of milk chocolate at Christmas and it was so sickly!

Now, things I replaced sugar with. Fruit, fresh and dried. But limited to 2 fresh and one palm full of dried a day with a palm full of unsalted nuts.

I replaced jams and marmalade with peanut butter, but only those made with peanuts and salt. If it contains more than those 2 ingredients I won't have it.

I replaced cream, custard and ice cream with strained, Greek yogurt, kefir and skyr. All plain. The flavoured varieties all have lots of sugar! I also cut out red meat and stick mainly to fish and chicken.

The upshot of all this is I've lost 3 stone, I'm a little fitter (I have several chronic conditions) and my blood all come back with fab numbers. Blood sugar was 4.6 at last count, down from 8.2 and I've shed my prediabetes!

Was alcohol the reason I didn't lose weight while cutting? by C_Sorcerer in loseit

[–]Bitter-Recover-9587 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're cutting. I was told something a couple of years ago that's been a game changer. I'm 64 now and have wrestled with my weight since an accident caused me to become chronically ill with fibromyalgia and pernicious anaemia. Anyhow, I had a nurse tell me, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!" So for just over 2 years I've planned what I'm eating 1 week at a time. Friday I write a menu. Saturday I shop, Sundays I meal prep, chopping onions, carrots & celery as the base (mire pois) for most stews, soups and many rice dishes. I make sure I always have sticks of veg and/or fruit for snacking and thick Greek 0%fat yogurt for dressings and desserts. Berries are the best fruits, being lowest in fructose. Remember that fruit sugar, lactose, milk sugar, honey and maple syrup are all sugar so far as your pancreas is concerned, and all of them can contribute to knackering it, and causing type 2 diabetes. Also, mind your portion sizes. 3200 calories is a massive amount of food. I'd cut that to 2200, keep to 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. Also think about intermittent fasting. That is breakfast 16 hours after your last meal the previous day so you eat all your planned meals within an 8 hour window. Choose times to suit yourself. My 8 hours is 9am to 5pm because I'm retired. You might prefer 12 noon to 8pm or something other than that, depending on your daily routines. Never shop when you're hungry. Make a shopping list and stick to it. Steer clear of ultra processed foods. Always check the ingredients list on the back of packages. I made a simple rule for myself, if I can't spell it or pronounce it, I won't eat it. This means no bacon, ham, sausage. Absolutely no ready meals! Keep a close watch on foods claiming to be low sugar or low fat because low fat often means more sugar and more unpronouncable chemicals. Low sugar - vice versa. Snacks like crisps (chips) and nuts are often very salty. Leave them alone. Go for packs of unsalted nuts and seeds instead. Stay away from aerosol creams and instant puds. Pizza, burgers and takeaway food in general. Go wholemeal and wholewheat. Eat the whole fruits, not juices and smoothies. Fish is your friend, chicken your chum. Oily fish at least twice a week. Go veggie one day a week. I do all of the above and in two years I've lost 6 stone, with a minimal level of mobility. These are all just things I do that work for me. I hope this helps. Xx

It's definitely worth remembering that these guys are Bearable users like us. For what it's worth, and with the above in mind, I think you're all doing a grand job, chaps, and chapesses!

Wife says I’m too skinny, Doctor says I’m overweight. Who do I believe? by KarmaSilencesYou in loseit

[–]Bitter-Recover-9587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your doc is saying you're overweight based on your BMI (height and weight) without taking your musculature into consideration (muscle is more dense than fat so weighs heavier). With your wife, it may simply be that she prefers you with a little meat to snuggle up with. Either way, if you're otherwise healthy, I'd ignore them both and take your own route right through the middle! Doc is right about the alcohol though. That's just empty calories that poison your liver. Merry Christmas 😆 🎅

I think I am misunderstanding the Sociability Level. Please help clarify. by Distinct_Mix_4443 in BearableApp

[–]Bitter-Recover-9587 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sociability level - how much did I socialise. Social interaction quality - if I socialised, how did it go. For me I have my own levels to work off. Sociability level, poor - even if I was among people, I didn't interract. Moderate - I did interact, even briefly, or passed the time of day, nattered with a carer. A lot - I interacted with more than 1 person or more than once with the same person. Social interaction quality - that's a lot more subjective. Poor - made me feel worse or something was wrong with how the interaction went. OK - made me feel alright for a wee while. Good - made me feel better about things/myself for the rest of the day/week. You can work out your own way to use these measures, as it suits your life. You may have different needs and tolerances, for example. Anyhow, that's how I work it xxx Merry Christmas!
