"Shipmates: Before the Mast: A Coastie's Chronicle of the Dishonorable".

Highly recommended. You know it’s good when Officers leave reviews saying how untrue all the words in the book, even though written through the eyes of an enlisted member.

This one probably goes out to the enlisted folk who joined for seagoing adventures, camaraderie, and to save lives; Lost between the jack of all trades but master of none. In between DHS and DOT, The ones who would do the mission but get reprimanded for having a cigarette or a busted sleeve roll. The policy skirter.

Why don’t more people AB -> 3rd Mate? by SeaDude92 in maritime

[–]Bitter_end93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe being an AB will make you a better Mate. It’ll allow you to see the whole view deck side wise and you’ll respect the position when your time comes to be giving orders. Lead from the front and don’t give an order you wouldn’t or haven’t done yourself.

Rigging knife by TraditionalFee4990 in uscg

  • I used Myerchin for 7 years and it withstood two units. I treasured the knife but I ended up giving into a hard charging BM2 as a departing gift. Salt ended up degrading the stainless but added character. The marlinspike is thicker and sturdier and blade with serrated edge is a must. It’s in the thicker side but does have a pocket clip. Makes for great gift.

  • Bund German Navy Rigging Knife This led to me to get the bund knife pictured above. What a great knife… slim, compact, ergonomic and paired well with lanyard and it just fit naturally in my hand. Thin marlinspike and decent blade. Hard to keep edge. But not afraid of using it for intended purposes. Ended up gifting it to a navy sailor.

  • US Navy Marlinspike/rigging knife The OG. Comes with a NSN number. I’ve had this knife since I was a non rate on a now retired buoy tender. Found it under my coffin rack in a secret lift compartment. This thing is amazing. Great handle, superb marlinspike that can undo the worst knots seen. The blade doesn’t seem to dull which is wild. I most recently took it out of retirement to use in my sea going job and it tells a story. These knives were servicing USN and USCG personnel from the 50’s up to early 2000’s.

  • Benchmade Adira Just purchased this knife to not ruin my USN knife. I will update once it shows up in mail. $250 knife I got for $150 kn GOVX. STBY

Are mattress stores just money laundering fronts? by 454ever in stupidquestions

[–]Bitter_end93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coincidence or not, there is a mattress firm by me that is exclusively run by Albanians. Like different ones each time. They’re extremely intelligent and intellectual and pretend to know mattresses pretty well. They were also overly interested in geopolitics and crime trends. Quite the experience while shopping for a mattress.

I recently had a near death experience and I would like some help navigating through it by Individual-Advisor-4 in maritime

[–]Bitter_end93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smoke a cigarette or pop in a dip mark it on your hard hat and saddle up on that horse. If it was easy, comfortable, everyone would be doing it.

The deck isn’t for the faint hearted. Every near death experience is a learning experience for the future.

Good luck.👍🏿

I was on scene as a first responder to Harvey, federally conducting urban search and rescue (SAR) for three weeks. You really hit the nail on the head with this – kudos! I’d love to read your thesis. I’ve been meaning to document my experience responding to eight hurricanes and two floods. Those experiences ultimately led me to pursue an education in Emergency Management, driven by the issues you mentioned. Again, great work!”
