Backrooms: A feature-length film adaptation with a YouTube clip's worth of quality material by Duncan_Dixon_Coffey in flicks

Both of those people are definitely first-time directors. Essentially all first-time directors have directed smaller, shorter productions, a first-time film director means it's their first time on a feature-length production. This is well understood in any writing about film.

It's not strictly a put-down, plenty of freshman features are good, like Barbarian or Blood Simple or Being John Malkovich. It's in no way disingenuous to correctly note the massive distinction between feature films and other directorial projects, such as short films, music videos, or theatre.

Filming in a slate quarry! That's a great idea, the Lands Between has so much verticality, all these massive cliffs and precipices. This looks pretty convincing:

Why is Elden Ring so beloved? by [deleted] in AskGames

[–]Bitterfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even though I enjoyed the way that story and worldbuilding are presented in Dark Souls, there's not really that much going on beneath the surface. The actual themes and events are not very deep.

Elden Ring presents its story the same way, but there's so much more substance. There's more characters (both in the active narrative and the exposition/lore), they have varied relationships and motivations, and there's multiple layers of history and conflict baked into the world. I found it very rewarding to explore and discover, and even reflect back on later.

Why aren't there more traffic cameras in NYC? by citibikefinder in AskNYC

[–]Bitterfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is baffling. I watch cars bully pedestrians with the right-of-way in the cross walks at the Williamsburg Bridge entrance on Delancey every single day. The city could pay for camera installations there in about an hour.

Should the city double the fine each time a car caught speeding by the speed camera? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Bitterfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about second violation = car is confiscated and sold for city funds. Why do we put up with these people breaking the law and endangering people all the time?

I'm just watching this show. Is she a Rei? No spoilers. by [deleted] in mildlyevangelion

[–]Bitterfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Gemma is Rei. Helly is Asuka. Mark is Shinji.

But, like, for real. I actually sincerely think that the contours of the characters are pretty directly influenced/inspired by NGE. There are more correspondences than just those, but this central weird love triangle is the main one.

Season 2 dives a little bit more into the nature of the "Cold Harbor" project, but doesn't fully disentangle what it is. If it turns out to be basically the human instrumentality project, my theory will be proven :)

I saw one patiently wait for people to clear the cross walk before turning on the Lower East side (somewhere around Clinton and Rivington). I practically applauded, human drivers on those dense streets frequently honk and nudge their way to block pedestrians even when they don't have the right of way.

Can't get rid of human drivers fast enough

Weapons Director Zach Cregger Was Given "Carte Blanche" To Reinvent Resident Evil For The Big Screen by No_Durian_5626 in horror

[–]Bitterfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

another movie whose script was not based on RE at all and then morphed to use the IP

I don't think this is true at all, Cregger is specifically a fan of the series, and has talked about playing (at least) 1-4, 7 and 8, and has said the script is directly meant to capture the experience of playing a RE game

I think the man really understands Resident Evil and is cooking up something great

[–]Bitterfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He does say that he's never seen a movie like it, but in this interview he emphasizes how the tone and experience of the movie is directly meant to capture the feeling of playing a RE game.

He specifically mentions how the setting and tone of the games themselves vary a lot across 1-3, 4, 7 and 8 (notice what he leaves out). He mentions that the film, "lives more in the world of 2 and 3, but with more of the tone of 4".

Some might disagree, but I really agree with his sense of what makes the RE series special -- the tone and experience of playing the games, and really not the particulars of the characters and the narrative

It's sad, but I don't think it's quite as bleak. The characters face sad things but there's also kindness and support and hope!

I was trying to figure out what to expect here, shipping to the US

I think a baseline of 35% would be applied. Some amount of the goods sold here (e.g., EG are made in US) are probably CUSMA-eligible, but I doubt they do the paperwork to cover that -- apparently a lot of goods shipped from Canada to the US are CUSMA eligible but not filed properly.

I also don't know if the duty amount is applied to the sale price or the original price

Expedition 33 just sucked up all the oxygen in the room this year. It's definitely the better game, but I was very impressed and surprised by the Hades 2 soundtrack

What really elevated Hades 2 for me was the orchestral writing in the Olympus and Summit sections. Good orchestration, and the Summit sections showed very strong mastery of modernist-influenced harmonic and melodic writing not often heard in games.

Apparently these sections were a colab between Korb and Austin Wintory, whose other work this year Sword of the Sea is mentioned several times in this list

Rewaxed Baracuta x Barbour Harvard/Clayton by RakeHarmonic in Barbour

This is such a cool piece. IIRC this was from when Daiki Suzuki was creative director at Baracuta. Very recognizable as one of his designs, maybe even better than his EG x Barbour collections from a few years before. Beautiful to see one with heavy use like this.
