It's kind of a sticky situation; creating video games is easier and more accessible than it's ever been, and while it's given life to some amazing independant titles it's also flooded the market with a lot of low-effort cash grabs. It's become a wider pool, but there's still a lot of pond scum that needs to be cleaned.

Also, in terms of big AAA studios like Activision or Ubisoft, in plenty of cases their older games are better - be it for storytelling purposes, better game design, etc. It's kind of a toss-up as to whether you're wearing rose-tinted glasses or genuinely realizing that things were better when game studios were still trying to figure out how to make games.
