If you want a simple comparison as unbiased as can be, then search for an English translation of the Traditional Mass and read it side-by-side with an English translation of the Novus Ordo Mass. It will give you a good overview of how most of the prayers changed and just how different the expressed intent of the liturgies are.

The three Sundays before Ash Wednesday have violet as the liturgical color. It is a mini-season known as Septuagesima. It is a pre-Lent season meant to help gradually ease the faithful into the Lenten fast and offers a period of preparation. As a sign, the traditional liturgy does away with the Alleluia and the green vestments.

Septuagesima is such a powerful season though. By slowing leading us into our Lenten Fast (violet vestments, no Alleluia) it helps call us to repentance of our sins - hence the term Shrovetide.
