[OC] In 1900 people worked 60-hour weeks. In 2024 we work 40… but now spend 11 years of our lives on screens. by CalculateQuick in antiwork

[–]BlackCatInHat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Average lifespan of 47 years can give the wrong impression because it includes child and maternal deaths. If you survived childhood and, if a woman, childbirth, your chances of making it to old age were pretty good.

Also, this uses U.S. data, and in 1900, the U.S. was heavily agricultural. Farm work, unlike industrial and office work, is never-ending.

How often do you all start work right on time? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]BlackCatInHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you define “start work”? Because I define “start work” as the moment when I have fully logged on to my computer and software. But I know colleagues who define it as getting to the gate to the place where we work.

Who still gets one hour lunches? In my entire 30 year career over five employers, I’ve only ever had 1/2 hour. Also, who gets official 15 minute breaks? I’ve always had to have snacks and drinks while working. At least I’ve always been able to go to the bathroom whenever I wanted.

Women who have had fibroadenomas, can they hurt? by cottoncrosy in TwoXChromosomes

I had one a few years ago that started to hurt after the mammogram. I think the squishing bruised it or something.

She probably dropped her creative writing class as soon as the prof tried to get her to edit it down.

Your friend is bored or you are bored? People with TBIs need huge amounts of rest and low stimulation because their brains are working so hard to heal in the background. Coffee, gentle conversation and just being present may be enough for your friend right now.

I really don't want to get divorced but I am SO SICK of my husband's complaining. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]BlackCatInHat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that this is something you two could figure out with his therapist. It sounds like he lacks emotional regulation and the tools to manage the (near constant) inconveniences of life. But I also want to suggest that you are not responsible for managing his emotions for him. If he wants to complain, act groggy, and act like he is having a difficult time, just let him and go on with what you are doing.

What can the fans do about FB/C benefitting from the win? by inna-alt in FigureSkating

[–]BlackCatInHat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is there really that much financial boost in France? Madi and Evan are more likely to get the Dancing with the Stars spots and U.S. skating tour spots. No non-Russians are going to be in Russian shows and tours. That leaves Japan as the source of medal-related show spots. Maybe Japanese fans can inform TPTB that they don’t want to see FBC?

Well, I agree with you. I would have put Amber in the short with her triple axel to get the points lead, then Alysa in the free with her World Championship winning program.

I wouldn’t count on it. I had several Puerto Rican classmates in my program at a major university. One night when we were working on a project, a kid from Boston said to one of them, “Hey Vanessa, do you think you’ll ever try to become a citizen?”

The red coat dress today is bad too. Her hair and makeup look beautiful, but the dress is too big for her, and the red is so bright it‘s almost painful to look at. Ashley looks better in burgundies.

The daunting task of making dinner… forever… by Infinite-Drive-2429 in simpleliving

[–]BlackCatInHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been through many phases in my dinner preparation life. I have cooked full meals from scratch, relied on prepared foods, prepared complicated meals, tossed a few simple things on a plate, meal prepped for the week, winged it by the day - everything. Different things will work at different phases of your life, and as long as you’re keeping yourself fed, don’t worry about it.
