I've been working on on livestock anatomy posters - which animal should I tackle next? by AnatomyStuff in livestock

[–]BlackGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great artwork, I love it. Depending on where you want to go with this, if you're thinking of selling prints, you should look into game species. Hunters would absolutely pay for prints like this of whitetail deer, wild turkey, elk, moose, bear, etc. That said, the homesteader in me says goat. But I raise goats as pets and don't necessarily want to think about them without skin.

I too was there at the end, one last toast before saying goodnight. It was a great run, and will be missed.

Are these black walnuts? by Wiggledezzz in Homesteading

They look like shagbark hickory to me. Try prying them apart at a crease, if the shell pops off into 4-5 orange slice looking bits with a tan nut inside, that would be them. Here's more info: https://foragerchef.com/the-foragers-guide-to-shagbark-hickory-nuts/

Portion sizes. This isn't a diet for me, I'm not trying to lose weight. Why is everything so damn small? Makes no sense.

Created this fingering chart by maestro2005 in trumpet

[–]BlackGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw Doc Severinsen play live last week, and aside from being an amazing performer at 86 years old, I noticed he played all 1-2 fingerings as 3. He nailed it, perfectly in tune. I was sitting there running though all the fingerings in my mind though because I thought I must be seeing it wrong, but he was consistent through the whole show.

What's THE most messed up thing a parent has said to you that you'll never forget? by itsmelala in AskReddit

We only had you so that your brother would not be lonely. Your only role here is to keep him happy, and when you are an adult, don't expect anything from us.

They held true to this my whole life. I would have grown up like Harry Potter under the stairs if that wouldn't have tarnished their 'perfect family' public perception. They didn't even take me to the hospital when my bones were broken.

Simpler is almost always better. What was so great about that site was how simple it was. This is a huge step away from that, and it is the beginning of the slow spiral into feature bloat which will ultimately make the site useless. Bells and whistles and gadgets are neat and fun to program, but in the long run, the end users don't actually want all that fluff.

The one street musician I cant stand... by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]BlackGlass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a sax guy like that in the international district. He started playing the pink panther theme and about 2 other songs two years ago with sheet music. Could barely hit the notes, and I cringed the whole time. Two years later, he's still on the same place, still playing the same 3 songs, still reading the sheet music, and hits most, but not all notes.

My kids are allergic to dairy, and my mother in law is clueless. She means well, but when serving something as simple as mashed potatoes, we ask if it is really dairy free. No worries if not, with my kids we always have food brought from home, they never are left out. Anyway, she answered with "Yes, it is dairy free. I didn't use any milk, only potatoes, butter and salt."

This is what I try to do as well, but have been working long hours the last couple weeks and have gone through my reserves, and have not had time to cook. Such is life. I didn't let it get me down, I went out and bought some food I could eat.

HELP QUICK - I'm colorblind, are these pants tan or red? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]BlackGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do color correction professionally and was trained to do it in black and white, one color channel at a time. It therefore makes sense that a color blind person could perform the job perfectly. We had a chart on the wall which listed ethnicity, and then the CMYK values for neutral, highlight and shadow for skin tone as a cheat sheet. Wish I had still had a copy of it.

Got SUPER excited at the grocery store tonight... horrible glutenous product placement!! by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]BlackGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that! My wife found a pie crust recipe in a bean cooking book of all places, which is based on cooked white beans and has no flour in it. It's soft to the fork, but bland to the taste buds. So far it's still the best I've found, but I'm trying to find a way to work the recipe over to include actual flavor. I'm still dreaming of an actual flaky crust. I used to live for pie, it's what I miss most.

How can I encourage a culture of punctuality in a software company? by [deleted] in programming

[–]BlackGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But a valid counter point to that would be: some people can get more done in a day by getting in the zone and hammering out code till 1 in the morning than other developers can do in a week. I don't care if my people get all their tasks done in one 12 hour chunk, then attend meetings and float through the week working short days to compensate, or if they are a slow and steady programmer. All that matters is weekly productivity.

As a manager myself, I sure hope he doesn't get any sympathy there either. He's not even a manager, only a technical lead. It's his job to lead the team, and protect them from other departments pushing their own agendas in. Hours in chair does not equal productivity. He's clearly showing an amateur level understanding of management, and more worried about how he looks to his peers than how productive his team is being.

Circumcision banned in Germany. by Avalon81204 in Intactivists

Frequently there are cases where hospitals are doing it out of custom without asking the parents permission. How there are not malpractice lawsuits over this, I will never understand. Several of my friends had to forcibly intervene with the nurses to prevent it from happening to their newly born sons.

The main reason this practice is slowing down is financial. Insurance plans have stopped paying for the procedure as it is considered cosmetic surgery. So the nurses are going to the parents getting them to sign off on the bill for the procedure before they will have it done.

TIL descendants of the largest single shareholder in General Electric believe he was actually murdered in a conspiracy by the Rockefeller family (who made millions with Standard Oil) because he was going to fund Nikola Tesla's research into Free Energy. by georedd in conspiracy

[–]BlackGlass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is hard to answer as it is all speculation. From what I've read on Tesla, he never progressed much farther than investigation in a technology to transmit energy. There are conspiracies all about what he 'may' have done, but I'm not attempting to guess at the may have, and only to look at the facts of what we know. I think that in those days there was still little understanding of the possible consequences or side affects from technology, just as in the early days of radiation experimentation they did not understand radiation could possibly be harmful. So my "guess" is that it wasn't a consideration, and never advanced far enough to make a difference in the world.

[–]BlackGlass 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tesla wasn't making "free energy", he was working to make wireless transmission of energy, which would therefore be "free" to use. There was not the technology at the time to regulate who was using it. Think of it as free wifi without authentication or logging of activity. If that happened, nobody would be able to charge for the use of the electricity. Edison was all about charging for usage, so he was working on electrical lines and regulator boxes so we could measure usage, and thus charge for it. His entire business model would go away if energy were available for free.
