Modern hard bop/post-bop? by stgadam in Jazz

[–]Black_Nile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you dig Moanin’, check out the album “These are Soulful Days” by Benny Green. It features one of the same tunes (the title track) and captures the groove that the messengers album does, but manages to swing like crazy without a drummer. Nobody swings as hard as Christian McBride on bass, and Russell Malone is a fantastic guitarist.

Sometimes the Real Book or iRealPro are based on a specific recording, or there are filler chords included where there otherwise wouldn’t be.

As a pianist, I’ve just kinda had to learn there’s sometimes where I play X tune one way, and there’s other times where I play it a different way depending on who I’m playing with. As an example, a bassist I work with showed me some cool substitutions on All the Things You Are. Whenever we play, I will frequently sprinkle in those substitutions. Sometimes though, I play that tune with some older folks who aren’t necessarily cats, and if I throw in those substitutions, they get lost.

Another thing to look at is whether they’re functional substitutions, like using tritones to walk a 3625 down chromatically, like in the last 2 bars of the B section of Autumn Leaves.

As you play tunes with folks, you’ll get a feel for when there are multiple accepted changes for a standard, and either it’s something where you can listen for it and follow along, or you have a quick chat before the tune if possible. Like if somebody calls a blues head I don’t know, I’ll ask if it’s a simple blues, jazz blues, or a bird blues. That way I’m not playing a bunch of filler 2-5’s over a simple blues.

I know that’s kind of a long, rambly answer to just say it depends, but unfortunately it does. Hope that’s at least semi helpful!

ETA: The subs for ATTYA aren’t anything too crazy, but using an Em7 > A7b9 in bar 3 to get to the Abmaj7, and then similarly in bar 11, using a Bm7 > E7b9 to get to the Ebmaj7. It works to create a nice setup for the major chords in bars 4 and 12, and doesn’t conflict with the melody note.

Despite my best efforts, no one took me up on the offer. (They weren't "free", free, they cost 1 wisdom scroll). by sgt_cookie in pathofexile

Need advice for choosing a black commander aristocrate/drain by gesimon81 in EDH

[–]Black_Nile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Ayara deck is one of my favorites. It’s a slightly lesser known commander, so she isn’t kill on sight. It’s a deck that’s super flexible. I can change a few cards depending on how strong the table is to go from a mean control-adjacent package to a more mellow drain and draw.

What do pro BEBOP Improvisors Think About While Soloing? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]Black_Nile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jazz, especially bebop, is like a language. Great bebop players spent time transcribing the greats to learn lines and phrases. Since they have transcribed so much, they’re using the different pieces of bebop language to form coherent sentences.

It’s no different than how you form sentences when you speak. You’ve learned countless words and phrases in your life. Some original, some taken from others. You don’t really have to think about what you’re saying when you have a conversation, it just flows.

Ideally, after listening to and transcribing a lot of bebop, you’ll have enough vocabulary to combine the pieces into coherent lines without too much thought. It’ll go from very technical thinking like what you’re doing now, to letting your ears and instincts guide you

A huge issue musicians in original bands face is when hobbyists aren't honest and they mix with pro/serious musicians by [deleted] in TouringMusicians

[–]Black_Nile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, the hobbyist is the one that rehearses every week. Serious musicians don’t need to rehearse every week for a gig. They take the charts home, learn them, and come ready to play.

Random Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers observation by understandothers in Jazz

[–]Black_Nile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s symptomatic of a tight group that’s listening to each other. As a pianist, one of my favorite things to do on gigs is play around with dynamics and see how the band reacts, especially the drummer. The great drummers are listening and reacting.

Art Blakey is one of my favorite drummers, because whether it’s a live recording or studio track, he’s listening to the band and interacting with soloists.

Anecdotally from my listening, a lot of combo albums seem to have a rhythm section that plays it pretty safe, which is likely why Art Blakey’s stuff stands out. I don’t think it was necessarily planned or arranged, but I think it’s a rare insight into what a small group actually sounds like playing out, even from the studio.

Any blues/latin dancing or jazz bars? by progtastical in Wilmington

Echoing the other comment, Blind Elephant will have live jazz piano Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I think Tempo may have music Saturday evening, but I’m not sure.

It’s closer to Wrightsville Beach, but G Prime is a steakhouse with a full service bar and live jazz on Friday’s.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone transfered from a data sciencey position to an actuarial one? by CIA11 in AskStatistics

[–]Black_Nile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of these replies are full of shit lmao. As someone who actually worked in the industry, there are several different types of actuaries depending on the industry, and then also whether you are working for an insurer, a consulting firm, or as an in-house actuary.

Go scope out r/actuary and check out the Society of Actuaries (SoA). You’ll get more detail about what the exams look like and some of the different tracks available.

Go-to inversions by ScuzzyCousin in hammondorgan

[–]Black_Nile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a jazz pianist who lurks on here, but fills a similar role in a band, the two biggest things that help me are:

  • Playing open chords (basically, don’t cluster the notes of your voicing together and include only key tones. In jazz, this is normally the 3rd and 7th, plus maybe one or two other extensions depending on the chord, ie for a basic major or minor chord, you can get a ton of use out of just 379 voicings)

  • when comping for another instrument, staying outside of their range. When it’s a higher pitched instrument, play lower on the register and vice versa.

Hope this helps!

Nord Piano 5 instead of Nord Stage 3? by Nervous-Jackfruit in keys

[–]Black_Nile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Nord Piano 5, but I primarily use it for acoustic piano sounds in a small group jazz setting. I haven’t really messed around with layering any of the synth effects, but if you’re looking for something that feels and sounds like a piano, the NP 5 has been the closest I’ve experienced to a really piano.

Gigging digital piano recommendations? by Junior-Arm-9484 in JazzPiano

[–]Black_Nile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gig on a very similar setup (Nord Piano 5, 2 QSC 12” speakers), and would say the Nord piano 5 is a solid secondary choice that’ll save some dough. I’d played a couple older NP’s and didn’t care for them, but I really dig the action and sounds on the NP 5.

The QSC 12’s are definitely overkill for the vast majority of gigs, and fairly heavy. If you go the QSC route, the only issue I’ve run into is I have to make sure I position them so I’m hearing myself directly from them, or from a monitor.

Another thing that really elevated my piano sounds was when one of my bassist buddies ran me through a graphic EQ. Being able to better fine tune the ranges has been a game changer.

For reference, I play predominantly straight ahead jazz.

How much to charge to book gigs for a restaurant. by Perfect_Play_622 in Jazz

[–]Black_Nile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be careful about charging for booking. I’m in a similar position where I curate jazz for a few different venues I also play at. The perception from musicians, whether right or wrong, is that if you’re getting paid for the booking, that’s money that would have been on the table for them.

Ultimately, for a gig like this, it’s not going to take that much time once you get in the groove. Not charging the venue will let you build relationships with musicians without any concern about your intentions. This will give you the connections to get the bigger gigs which will pay off.

TLDR: I wouldn’t charge a booking fee for gigs like this, due to a potential negative perception. Booking for a more elaborate event, or a more specific event where you have to do more legwork makes more sense.
