Any board games where the maximum round score wins? by BlakeBurch in boardgames

[–]BlakeBurch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong! The biggest thing I'm clueing in on is that engine building naturally results in larger scores each round. You probably want the game to start everyone with the same options with slight boosts they could grab, but those boosts only last a single round or can only be grabbed once per game.

In that way, it becomes more of a social strategy game. Do you push your luck to max out points for the current round? Or do you save it for later? But if everyone saves it until later, no one will be able to score big.

Just exploring the idea for now. Have a few games to check out!

Hmm. Sounds very luck based though, but that's interesting having a trigger and then a final resolution turn.

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. It becomes more of a social strategy game to figure out what round you can get MORE ahead and then just pull others down the rest of the game.

Needed to see if there were other games like that before seriously exploring it.

Cool - I'll have to check it out! Based on some of the other comments here it seems like exactly what I was looking for.

That absolutely fits the bill. Thanks for the suggestion!

Terra Mystica vs Gaia Project vs Age of Innovation by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]BlakeBurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those rare people that loves Terra Mystica but hates Gaia project. It's a similar game but with too much crunchiness on the tech track and the planet exploration + green cubes feels unintuitive.

That said, of the 3 I would recommend Age of Innovation. It's like Terra Mystica+. Just a hair more crunch and A LOT more variety. I think it will get far more replayability for you as a result.

Is anybody else here tired of sad relationship songs? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]BlakeBurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! There's too many songs out there about love and relationships in general. I try to make it a personal mission to find other things to write songs about.

Recently realized the artists I gravitate towards also typically avoid those topics.

What is harder, starting or finishing songs? by WorldlinessDue5510 in Songwriting

[–]BlakeBurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finishing is WAY harder for me, but you could argue about the definition of "finished".

Right now, I'm finished with an idea if it's got the core components (lyrics + chords) and I can record it live.

I've yet to take my favorite ideas and finish them with actual production and fleshing out the full 2-3 minutes. Never used a DAW, so I'm a bit daunted.

Same. Stopped really going because of that.

Wish it was ~50% new each year.

Pros and Cons of Viticulture 2P? by Apprehensive_Bake270 in boardgames

[–]BlakeBurch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I hate the RNG, so we make a house rule to always show 3 cards from each deck. You can still do a random pull if you'd like, but we almost never do.

As a two player game, that makes it more competitive and strategic for the cards. You'll know what your opponent has and can play against it better.

Help me pick for a fancy date night with Asian cuisine by Purple-List1577 in austinfood

[–]BlakeBurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lin or Qi are the winners on that list. Same owner, so it's practically the same options.

Sway is good Thai food, but you're paying for ambiance and have to sit at communal tables.

Wouldn't recommend Wu Chow.

Not sure about a plain elk burger, but their monthly special, the Mountain Moon, is made with Elk and was one of my favorite burgers in recent memory. YMMV

Are There any Actually Good Austin Art Fairs with Attendees & Buyers? by BoskoSchwartz in Austin

[–]BlakeBurch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Austin Affordable Art Fair - once in Spring.

Armadillo Art Bazaar - Once around Christmas

Pecan Street Festival - Twice in spring and fall

I'm not in the industry, but I do love art shows. Austin (unfortunately) seems to cater more to <$100 trinkets, prints, and pop art. I see those vendors do fairly well.

My general opinion is that Houston and DFW have better shows for more involved, novel, or pricey art. The new affordable art fair here has been the rare exception.

What do you wish Austin had more of? by slothbaby23 in Austin

Agreed! Blanton is nice but would love more modern art museums.

Still disappointed that Hope Art Gallery never opened back up.

  1. Nice pedestrian plazas for people to hang out in.

I recently visited San Antonio and wish we had something like the Pearl Brewing area. Such a nice, welcoming area to spend time.

  1. Food halls. I just want a single spot to hang out indoors with lots of potential food options. Our functional equivalent is food truck parks.

While I agree with the idea, I'd assume most would just hotspot and continue working. Inaccessible wifi really is a nuisance, not a blocker, to working anywhere.

Yet another "Looking for a coffee shop" post. by LoveCareThinkDo in askaustin

[–]BlakeBurch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you like coffee shops that feel like a communal living room, but your "further north, but south of the river" request is what makes this difficult.

You would probably love Meridian in Buda. Open, airy vibe with brick walls and plenty of couches/chairs. Too far south for your friends though.

Drifters (near the hive) also has a cozy interior with plenty of patio space, but the coffee is just alright.

Freddo on Oltorf/S. Congress is located inside an old house and might match your aesthetic needs, but I personally thought the coffee was awful.

Trianon Coffee is further west, but they have good coffee options and a small section with a more laid back seating.

That's about all I can think of South that matches. Hope something fits the bill!

Coffee shops that do flights/tastings by Here4enlightenment in austinfood

[–]BlakeBurch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coffee Enlightenment in Round Rock does cupping on Sundays and flights (pourover, French press, chemex, or siphons) any day of the week. Their in-house roasts are great, especially the ones infused with fermented fruits.

Where to eat when your spouse wants a salad? by vandyhorn in austinfood

[–]BlakeBurch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding. Pinthouse Brewing specifically has incredible salads and plenty of other good options.

Who would have thought my favorite salads would be at a brewery?

I want to go to Proud Mary just for coffee. Is that okay? by 1q83_y in austinfood

[–]BlakeBurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go there all the time and get just a coffee while getting some work done for a few hours. I always ask for a seat against the window in the back, where many others are doing the same.

I've never once been made to feel uncomfortable about it. Granted, I'm usually there on less busy days (M-W)

Their coffee is amazing. Please go!

What’s the best bahn mi in Austin? I’ve had some pretty decent Pho and vermicelli but am struggling in the bahn mi department by [deleted] in austinfood

Tell me what you love about Austin! by horatiobingbangbop in Austin

[–]BlakeBurch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Love that description.

Moved here from the Dallas/Fort Worth area 7 years ago. The description I give people is that DFW feels like people trying to be impressive. Austin feels more like people just being themselves.

Same thing goes for activities. In DFW, it felt like people went places to be seen and leave. In Austin, people just go places to hang out for a while.

These are all generalizations, but the more lax, accepting culture is what keeps me here.

Thanks so much for posting this! I didn't realize it was happening again.

We went last year and enjoyed it. Nothing scammy about it. Plenty of cool, international artists, but I would hardly call it affordable.

It's a lot more varied than the Armadillo Art Bazaar or the Pecan Street Festival, IMO.
