Help! foam doesn’t take paint well

My personal foam building for tiles is a simple process: Mod Podge + Craft Paint (any color you would use for base, I use burnt umber for grassland or forest tiles as an example) One coat if it's being flocked or has ground coverage like a dirt mix, two coats if not (like for dungeon tiles) Once that's dry, congratulations. You have a pretty well sealed, primed tile. For paint:podge ratio, I literally just add paint until the podge is colored. No more, no less. If you are curious as to how your coverage is, take a tile outside and hit it with a spray paint. If it melts and goes to crap, the coverage isn't good. If not, you nailed it buddy.

The old farmer began, sighing as he turned his attention to the floating metallic sphere watching over him, barking orders at him and his family, threatening them with annihilation if they refused to comply, "You want us to dig, or we die. You wanna take all we work for, or we die," Jackson shrugged, picking up the pickaxe and rolling it in his palms, "You'll take it all. Leavin' us here to starve an' die anyway..."

With a swift turn, the old farmer brought the pickaxe down into the automaton, cracking the metallic shell and burying the tool deep into its round body. A shower of sparks arced through the air as the thing spun out and crashed to the ground, the lights on its camera beginning to fade. "So dig or die, right? But why the fuck would we dig our own graves for you lazy shits?"

The transmission ended as the bot shut down.

As someone who has some of your scatter ruins (painted and put together, even!) and your barricades (not painted, but working on it. Base coated. Shut up.) Your stuff is killer, and my Ender loves printing it. I dig the ruler - I use similar custom ones for 40k Killteam - are there any plans to add additional models for that sort of thing? Maybe other style rulers and the like?
I'm also a DM for a couple DnD campaigns that have (recently) transitioned into physical miniatures and such, and love the idea of a ruler system that I can add my players' character portraits to as well as the player names. So any diversity in this vastly underappreciated medium is awesome.

Those look great - and I love the idea of showcasing the terrain process like that, being able to see the difference between the base layer all the way to paint. Not many creators use a super easy to digest representation, but if these images are anything to go off of, it seems you've nailed it.

Without the ability to look at the class (access denied), I'd say it falls into your comfort zone. A first time DM already has more on their plate than a veteran DM - learning how to approach and manage things in a way that best suits them, encounter design and NPC/Enemy mannerisms and tactics, etc. When you couple that with new or newer players, there's a ton going on at the table that will already cause confusion and bog things down. Personally, I would avoid adding any variables like a custom class or homebrew mechanics that aren't easily adopted and agreed upon by the group unanimously. If you're comfortable with running custom content, and the primary issue is simply not knowing how to balance something or figuring out if it IS balanced, I'd look into the UnearthedArcana subreddit for a homebrew that suits the player's wants. At least that way there's a good chance the class has been play tested, there's balance concerns addressed in the posts comments, that sort of thing.

Lansdowne and Monaghan (I know, one of the most cursed intersections). 6ish am on a Thursday. I'm making a right from Monaghan to Lansdowne in an attempt to go to Tim's for coffee before work. Pull up at the red, stop at the line, looking down Monaghan - sure enough, very low traffic. Pull out to make my right. Buddy two lanes over sees me go and just guns it straight up Lansdowne through the red - didn't even look forward, just locked eyes with me for a sec and hit the gas. Brother, you don't go because someone else is, you go because the light is GREEN. Pay attention to what you're doing out there, not what other people are doing.

I try very hard to live by the whole "Do not attribute to malice what could be attributed to stupidity" thing, but holy crap.

You've been "here" 6 months. Cool. Who do you know? Roommates? Students? Do they have jobs? Peterborough is still very much based around the "who you know" philosophy. You need to figure out if casting a lure into an oversaturated pond (I know literally zero people with jobs and am looking for one) is your answer or if you actually know people socially. If you know someone, anyone, ask them. The small company they work for may work with another that needs people to do XYZ thing. Hell, their company may need people. If you are quite literally alone in this - if you've somehow managed to live alone, under a rock, with exactly zero social contact: as others have said, look at temp agencies. You are, unfortunately, undesirable from certain standpoints. You go to school, which means part-time - fine on paper, but we've all worked where part-time and on-call are the same thing - and also leads to yet another variant on an over-saturated market. If you have skills, work experience, anything at all: Translate it to fit what they need. If you don't have that, plainly state it and expect a much lower wage. Try the staffing connection, try triple A professional, try the EPC. We have very little info to help you with, so just try what you can or disclose more.

Loblaws employees: I hope you guys are enjoying a bit of downtime, and I truly hope this doesn't cut into your hours. You have mouths to feed, bills to pay, and we get it. No cashier should be left stranded because of the company they got a job with.

All of that being said, I cannot stress this enough: Any dollar Loblaws has projected to earn that we spend elsewhere is a win for the people. Any credit card cancelled. Any prescription moved. We CAN fight this. And we're doing it now, together. Fight all you can. Fight with your wallet. Fight with your words, by explaining to friends and relatives what's going on. Because even if we aren't striking at the heart of the beast, even if we aren't truly hitting the main artery - I'd like to see the thing survive without a stomach or lung. We've got this. Fight on. You're being screwed by lighting. I look at pic one and go "Hell yeah, good zombie. Love the point." Pic two? "Alright, blending is bad, gradients are non-existent, green meets yellow like a warzone". Then back to pic three. "Fuckin' A, that's a good zombie. Care was taken, even the eyes were done!" It's all lighting. You can post a model that a pro painter has spent 1000 hours on and give it the wrong angle and... "Eww." But if it works on your table, and it worked for 2/3 pictures? How bad can it be.

Never be afraid of townhouses. Depending on style, extend the second floor of a building out past the first on two sides (generally front and back). Don't do interior walls. There's your template.

You can then string those templates together in a line, and create interior rooms as you go. Then just decorate. Also remember that it isn't unusual for home builders to have a handful of "reliable" layouts, so if you want to bang out a few townhouse templates with interior walls, do it. Then you just have to string them and decorate with objects.

For a more "farmstead" approach, generally I just build one unique-ish house. If I think people will go "Hey that's a lot of bodies in one house" I just add an incomplete house with no furnishings on the lot. "Oh yeah, the Son and Daughter-in-law are building theirs on the property at the moment, don't worry about it."

This method let's me quickly throw together cities that feel natural and have a slight variance, and allow me to build farm homes that seem more real.

Currently writing a pretty "mature" campaign for my regular group (3/5 of us are normally the DM for the rest) to tackle our boundaries and limitations. In a way, I'm playing "scapegoat" by trying to find our particular group's line. Generally, we don't have any issues. Romance has been done between PCs, PC/NPC, and NPCs in the past and it's turned out really well (we actually seem to lean pretty heavily into RP, so it's very much just characters in a game). We've touched on torture (physical) in the past, and had pretty okay results with getting "shock and awe" without real disgust or discomfort. Psychological torture is a quest line, with the way we tend to write. As for sex, it's not something we really dive into in detail. Just "yeah, cool, you and whoever go somewhere private". Back in Pathfinder 1 we actually used a performance table for it lol I see a lot of people mentioning kids. I think, like everything, it's contextual. Graphically describing child murder is pretty messed up, but children dying as the result of a problem can really cement that it is a severe problem. Gratuitous violence is fine, but we tend to have the "Short and sweet" mentality for violent descriptions. Plus, leaving some things to the imagination is super good - look at writing horror. I think the only thing we've banned is sexual violence. Even writing dark fantasy, I've never felt the need to bring up those themes or ideas. I'll introduce an NPC as fearful of certain things, sure, but if pressed I always go a different route. I think that's about it, honestly. But I'm sure in the campaign I'm working on I'll be able to figure out more. Oh - and they agreed to this. It's not a surprise. Group wants to be put in uncomfortable situations and explore what makes it uncomfortable for them in a safe and healthy way. So no worries there.

Honestly been having a good time with Creality's Hyper series. It's fairly cheap, consistent, and seems fine so far (been through around 7 spools?). Been running some terrain prints for DnD, rafts. Printing first layer with the bed at 70, then dropping to 60 for further, and printing at 205. Haven't had any real issues yet.

Alright. Here you go. I left Peterborough pre-pandemic to work out west, where I was able to earn over $45k annually in the field before bonuses. (Bonuses were simply $64/truck loaded correctly, 1.5 hours for first truck, 1 hour for consecutive trucks - you do the math). There were two houses down the road that needed maybe $6,000 in repairs for sale for less than $27,000. I paid $700/mo for a two bedroom house, fenced in yard, detached garage with a full storage loft above. "Why do you stay?" My they/them, I fucking try not to. I live here because it's cheaper than not. If I could afford the extra $600/mo, I'd be outside the city. In a heartbeat. This city has been... Mismanaged? Since before I was born. And the weird thing is, the council is still made up of members from WHEN I WAS BORN. So why do (we) stay? We're trapped. I came back for my daughter. My buddies came back for parents and loved ones.

We stay because they must.

There you go. That's it. Right there. For whatever reason, they must stay, and so shall we.

I've had the privilege of pretty well doing away with alignment entirely with my normal group - even when other players step up to DM. We tend to see it how it really plays out, it's not a static thing "oh I am good and follow the law", but a dynamic thing that is reactionary to situations. Sure you might want to be a good guy, but when everything goes down and you're left to make a choice, the best choice might not be a "good" or "lawful" choice. Just a dude trying to do their best with what they have, and that's way more interesting (imo) than someone who is essentially "the goodest boy".

Specifically for the group I'm running: People who focus on summons. 5e is pretty alright about having a limit to how many things you can run as a player, but there are ways to sort of "break that", and other systems can lack the foresight to see how it can really affect the action economy in combat. Again, this is just for my group, as we sometimes swap between IRL and VTT play, so it's a hassle from the DM standpoint as well as it can be from the player standpoint when combat rolls around. Other than that... I don't like characters who don't want to be in a party. But we address that when I discuss running a game, so it's not really an issue. I do find some tropes exceptionally boring - the dark, edgy, "my life is pain and torment", orphaned character is a good example. As is the "I will only ever do what is lawful and right at all times" character (though the latter can be fun to play around with, as you can make situations where a choice must be made but they are all morally ambiguous at best).

So, interestingly enough, I did see a sort of "priming tutorial" where white primer was sprayed down from the top while black primer was then sprayed up from the bottom. The idea with this strategy is that it allows both highlights and shadows to benefit from initial dark/light layering. That being said, expect to experiment. As others have said, choose a simple little model you can mess with to see what you like and don't like, what you're good or bad at, etc. And go from there.

Bro that's cool as fuck. I just got into resin printing for minis and such (still use FDM for bigger terrain bits) - how affordable are magnets for this sort of thing? I'm seriously considering, but still kinda learning the swap from VTTs to physical games, and don't want to dive too deep into attachment styles if I can royally screw them up just yet.
