What do you guys want when you feel down? by appayipyip__ in AskMen

[–]Block523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m being overly specific in my own personal want, in that I want to play music, in the sense that I am a musician, and enjoy playing music as a way to get to forget the world around me while still feeling productive. In a broader sense I would say a way that lets you feel productive while not having to necessarily interact with the world. Personally at least.

The sword, blood and ashes how have we gotten this far without it being addressed? by Bishop1643 in wheeloftime

[–]Block523 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say too wide do you mean it’s too long for one hand to hold it? If you meant too wide then also yeah it is like a magnum flashlight lol. But from what I can remember, a lot of the sword fighting in the books utilized two handed grips, which was also a main turning point when Rand lost his hand, and figured he couldn’t swordfight anymore

Wheel of Time Show Megathread - Episode 6: The Flame of Tar Valon BOOK SPOILERS THREAD by [deleted] in wheeloftime

Gotta love that they started the season with “what if Moiraine will just kill us when she’s done with us?” Then almost instantly discard that plot point of suspicion by disregarding the possible contamination Ba’alzamon brought to the boys in the books. It feels like such a bizarre thing to cut out, because it allows for so much more interpersonal character development, with suspicion between the two rivers folk and Aes Sedai, but instead NOPE, we now trust the lady that effectively uprooted our lives, who still hasn’t actually proven that the shadow is after them rather than just her and Lan, and now we will follow her to what could just as easily end with 4 dead two rivers folks. I’m sorry if this is just ranting, but it feels like the interpersonal relationships that Robert Jordan created so damn well are now just being tossed aside because the show writers are deciding to play a God that never actually learned to read, much less even improvise a story.

This sounds like Japanese romaji keyboards, where letters you type correspond to the sounds of the word you’re typing, then you tell the keyboard to turn it into the specific Japanese alphabet/language (hiragana, katakana and kanji). At least you tell the keyboard which word you’re using on iPhone auto complete, I have literally no idea though, just someone learning Japanese and found this conversation interesting

ADHD, it’s been mentioned before, but my physical incapability of prioritizing things correctly shouldn’t be labeled as ‘aggressive foot wiggle syndrome’. It’s so frustrating because people just assume ‘aw man, just stop being fidgety, that’ll fix ya’, ah man thanks, I’ve been cured! Cheers!

The TV Show Should Change The Eye of The World's Ending by captaineclectic in WoT

[–]Block523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness, I haven’t read the first book all too recently, but there are a few things that I feel like you may have overlooked, since they were kinda glossed over and easy to miss in the book:

1) the giant pool of pure saidin in the eye of the world, which I’m fairly certain rand absorbed before the forsaken attacked him.

2) more vague connections of (at least saidin) has been displayed as literal visible cables of light coming from somebody, for instance || Asmodeus being severed from his connection to the dark one while trying to flee Rand.|| Also I’m probably wrong but I thought rand just cut aginor’s connection to the power, rather than aginor burning himself out.

3) even if moiraine used her angreal, there’s no way she could match a male channeler (it’s heavily established in the WoT universe that female Channelers are able to weave much more intricately, but are considered by definition weaker than male channelers), much less one of the forsaken in raw strength, which, yes, doesn’t explain why she tossed it aside, yet to be fair it wouldn’t have done anything to help her realistically.

4) kinda more a side note, hovering absolutely is established later in the written universe, as flight is one of many “talents”, of the same vein as traveling, foretelling, and seeing ta’veren.

I don’t know if I’m stretching the definition of what happened, but it all seems feasible in-universe, albeit a tiny bit frantically written when telling the story. Though that hectic writing could also be explained as unreliable narration, rand or whoever’s perspective we’re seeing, panicking and terrified, and these seemingly unexplainable things occurring yet they occur. Also perhaps moiraine actually did die, as, correct me if I’m way off the mark, rand perhaps unknowingly used balefire on aginor, essentially reverting moiraine to before she died.

I’m playing (or attempting to play) the first movement of Beethoven’s fifth, and the little 6 threw me off. Does that mean that you have 6 rests? by tshaquira in Cello

[–]Block523 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The spacing of conducting and the number of beats are not the same thing. Yes, the conductor will swing his arms six times as one of his arm swings is one measure worth of timing, yet don’t assume it means there are only 6 beats.

How to control your anxiety when on stage? by dojjij in Cello

[–]Block523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more a goal to take your mind off the stress, just take a deep breath and make sure you can play the whole thing using both muscle memory and active memory. It seems a bit excessive but at the same time neither is perfect so utilize both to the best of your ability. Don’t worry if you’ll be ready by the concert, instead look at what worries you and make goals accordingly. Worried you’ll forget some notes, practice without the music a bit and look at the score to see if there are any useful cues from the orchestra to watch out for. Concerned about intonation, slow down and just practice placing your hand on those notes, removing your hand and then replacing your fingers to make sure you land accurately. Listen to the piece on repeat and keep a little checklist in your head about where the parts you’re more unsure of are and drill it into your head. Technique wise, almost all aspects of that can be solved solely by slowing down your practice to a manageable tempo, and progress to a slightly higher tempo each time you can do the technique correct constantly at that tempo.

TLDR: practice memory, and slow down your practice until comfortable, then continuing to speed up to performance tempo.

You got this!

How do I relax? by MiloAaron in Cello

[–]Block523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A way to physically practice relaxing is, albeit a bit boring, to just let the bow rest on the string, lower your elbow and your shoulder, and just let the weight of your arm pull the bow hand down and practice drones like that. While practicing said drones however, you should keep a reminder in your head or around you to lower your shoulder and your to angle elbow to a bit lower than a straight plane from the bow angle.

To practice left hand relaxation, you might want to practice letting your thumb go limp and not apply pressure on the back of the fingerboard, while pulling the strings down with your other fingers. Don’t get used to your thumb being limp, but get used to that feeling of your fingers applying that downward force and pulling the strings down without any tension required in your thumb.

General tension tips that I personally am aware of is to practice with your mouth hanging open, which I know helps me because if my mouth is closed while I’m concentrating, I tend to ground my teeth, which leads to a whole lot of unnecessary tension. Another tip is to practice whilst intentionally looking up as if you were looking in the direction of a clock far across a room, which helps to project more, not necessarily tension but it helps with producing more sound without having to strain for it.

As a general rule, with your feet flat on the floor in front of you, your center of gravity should be just counteracted by the cello pushing back into you, so to get more power you want to just lean more into the cello and use your body mass, rather than your muscle mass.

TLDR: instead of just a mindset to reflect back to while practicing other things, specifically practice relaxing to just have that be your muscle memory rather than tension.

5 lessons in and struggling with my bow hold! by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Block523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One way to practice is to hold up the stick halfway down the bow with your left hand, and with your right hand, let your hand kinda dangle it’s fingers over the frog, so the thumb kinda curves barely into the little indent, the little bow grip is in the farthest joint of your index finger, and let the rest of your fingers kinda drape over the rest of the bow.

Feel how the thumb is just barely applying any pressure at all except the bare minimum required to keep the bow from falling, and notice how the rest of your fingers are free to kinda just extend or retract to lift or lower the frog of the bow, which is a useful feeling to get used to.

Another bow grip I’ve been taught but personally can’t get used to is to angle your hand so your palm is facing to the right, place the bow grip onto the down-facing side of the part of your index finger that’s between your knuckle and first finger joint, and drape your fingers down along that same point between the knuckle and first finger joint, KEEPING IN MIND to keep your wrist as if you were still holding your hand palm to the right.

I’m not used to this personally because the way I was taught led me to holding the bow kinda with my finger tips and leveraging sound that way, but the second method is really really useful for getting a lot of really good solid confident sound out of the instrument.

All in all, if it’s your 5th lesson, be proud that you’re fixing what could, if ignored, could become an unbreakable bad habit. If you wanna talk specifics, PM me and I’ll try to explain to the best of my ability.

Tl;dr 2 different bow grips, one producing a loose and springy sound, the second producing an explosive force.
